ITTA BENA - The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils laughed, joked and talked seriously about their goals for the 2009 season as they greeted fans and the media at Rice-Totten Stadium Saturday afternoon.

“We've got a lot of returning starters coming back,†said linebacker Rory Malone as he and teammates posed for photos. “I feel really good about this year. There's a real good attitude.â€

For senior safety Micheal Higgins the feelings are the same. “This feels great. I've been feeling good all summer. There's just something that happened during the spring,†he said of the teamwork and attitude of the squad. “There's a new spark and an extra boost that is going to get us going.â€

Quarterback Paul Roberts also has a positive outlook for the season. “Our morale is high coming out of our practices in the spring. I'm just looking forward to the season starting.â€

“This year, we feel really good about our guys,†said coach Willie Totten. “We did some things different this spring.†Totten said the team is also getting better as they get older. “We have grown up. Last year we started seven true freshmen. It really takes time to put a team together.†Totten said two years ago the team graduated 25 seniors and it has taken time to rebuild. “You're going to see a different football team this year.â€

The Delta Devils open at Arkansas State on Sept. 5. “Ark State will be a big test for us,†Totten said. “We've got a team we feel really good about and we're going to build on the things we do well.â€
