Mississippi Declares April 'Confederate Heritage Month'

Reported by: Shelley Orman

DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - Mississippi just added a new observation to its calendar for the month of April. Governor Phil Bryant declared this month 'Confederate Heritage Month.'

Mississippi makes the seventh state to celebrate the confederacy's history in April. Some people we talk with worry it's too divisive; others say it's part of history.

"I had no idea," says Chuck Ealy.

"No, I've never heard of it," says Shannon Ray.

"I don't think it should be forgotten because it's history," says Darlean Holt.

States haven chosen April because that's when most observe Confederate Memorial Day. In Mississippi, April 29th is set aside to honor those who served in the confederacy.

"It doesn't really affect me much," Ealy says.

"I'd have to think about that. I think that war is over and I don't think we need to keep fighting it," Ray says.

Governor Phil Bryant signed Mississippi's order last week.

and this is something to celebrate?

Not from most southerner White folks perspective, but like the Jews concerning the Holocaust, I would celebrate some memorial honoring Black folks that had to endure slavery.

Is there still a ***** day in Lisben, LA? While I was at Grambling, I had a friend from there. We went to the festival. It was people everywhere. I have no problem with the Confederate Heritage Month. We have black history month.

Who cares.
We just had Confederate memorial day off. To black state workers, it is just a paid day off.

This is just another example of what these Tea Party necks around here waste time on when there are so many other things in this last place state need fixing. Let them have it. They didn't even announce this crap and nobody has even reported it on any newscast around here.

They quietly made that a holiday. This is my first time hearing of this. My black folk in Mississippi how did you all miss this?

This is my first time hearing of this, and I usually follow the news closely. They obviously did it with little or no fanfare. With that being said, I see no problem with it. Let them have it...it's not going to reverse the outcome of the war.

A lot of white people missed it too because this is the only place where I have heard anything about this.

Anyway.............. Black people around here don't GAS about this. They already know how we feel when that Flag vote was finished. That would be "ya'll want it, so be it, but don't expect us to GAS about it."

People trying to survive and pay bills around here.

I wouldn't want one penny of my tax dollars to go to printing one letter of anything to honor the confederacy. If these folks want to honor the confederacy then they should volunteer to be a slave for the month of April. They were fighting to keep slavery so...since they want slavery back so bad, volunteer for it.

It's called being Institutionalized.

It's called being Institutionalized.

We call it not getting our blood pressure up over something that don't mean shat to us. Ain't nobody institutionalized. What should we have done? Waste our time marching up and down the street, singing "we shall overcome" over this retarded bullshat?

Sorry............But we got more important thing to take care of down here. Jobs, Bringing business into the area, everyday life. Others can have the trash spotlight issues. We ain't even gonna give them the satisfaction of thinking we GAS.

Why Pennsylvania is on this list? They never were part of the Confederate South. Some White folks are beyond understandable. :emlaugh:

Wait Maryland is on the list? Damn how in the HELL did I not get the memo. This had to be hush-hush for it to happen in Maryland.

These are the states that Officially observe the holiday. I was like I know there would have been an uproar if it was official in Maryland.

Confederate Memorial Day, also known as Confederate Decoration Day (Tennessee) and Confederate Heroes Day (Texas), is an official holiday and/or observance day in parts of the U.S. South as a day to honor those who died fighting for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Nine states officially observe Confederate Memorial Day: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.[1]

Actually, Maryland was a border State that didn't want to secede but was a pro-slavery State.
