Media and HBCU

delock

BARBERSHOP COO
We all know that local media and HBCU does not co mingle in a loving relationship.

A shooting happen near campus today. I was there when a passer by were trying to save ole boy (teenager).

Anywho, a local new reporter posted on his Facebook account that a shooting happen near TSU and Yates high! So a lady started to defend Yates and I defended TSU...

He come back "those are buildings" we need to mentor to the youth..blah blah

I'm like this...anything negative around TSU always comes back as a black eye to the school. Hell I here people talk about crap that happen years ago and was no way part of the school.

Now I respect this reporter 100% but local media always spin shyt to make HBCU look bad for ratings.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to defend it or make any sense of it lock. If an alleged "adult" is so illogical or ignorant that they'd attempt to say a sTu or Yates or even a PVAMU jumped off a wall and cracked somebody across the skull or squeezed the trigger on a gun, they really aren't worth the time or effort.

Those entities don't kill or injure people. Only PEOPLE kill or injure other people. That has NOTHING to do w/ school.

If it helps the "media" to sleep @ night, bless'em in a bad way (I ignore them).

You are right.....but all is good!

Dude it's the same way in Huntsville. Folks here blame A&M for everything in the community. From AIDS, to crime, to you name it. Man it's ten millions lies for every truth about the the school. This doesn't only come from the white community either, it's from those who attended HBCU's to PWC's, to those who can't even read and write.

They aren't worth the time. (enter kendrick lol and his media credentials to inform of how wrong that is lol)

wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong,

Just kidding.

I understand where delock is coming from. Since we are Facebook buddies I will go easy on him.

I cover crime for the newspaper I work for in the Chicago area. I get the question of "why do you only write about something when bad happens in our community or city?" (Our city) gets nothing but negative news from the newspaper, they say.

I tell them, my job is cover crime and accidents and deaths and anything involving the law. I know it's negative to write about a kid who got shot, or three cats who were arrested for drug possession, but it is what it is.

I had one woman tell me: "You should not be going up to complete strangers asking them about something that happened in this neighborhood. It is dangerous. You should be asking people what can they do to stop the violence in the streets."

I was like OK, I think.

I wrote about that cat who got shot at JSU a few years ago. And the incident made national news. It was not a proud moment in JSU history to say the least.

I try really hard not to "spin" stuff. I think the truth is more important. I rather would get it right than have the public no longer consider what I do trustworthy.

There are journalists I know who do spin stuff for various reasons and that sucks because honest guys like me get lumped as well.

Nobody likes negative news. Heck, I don't like writing about it. But that's life.

I hope HBCUs get as much positive news as possible. The schools sure need it.

LoL at Kendrick...

Here my take on the whole thing.

A few months ago a homeless guy was shot on UofH campus. But, they said he was shot at a Metro bus station on UofH campus.

Today....a shooting occur at a Metro bus station across the street from TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

See right there is two different style of media spin.

What should have been said. "A person was shoot during a fail robber attempt in Southeast Houston."

Then when you get into the story...the location is across the street from Texas Southern University. Three Yates students attempted to rob a TSU student waiting for the bus. The TSU student apparently fought back with the gunmen and the gunmen was shoot in the neck during the struggle.

Damn...commen sense writing right there!

Well, I was taught if an incident happens at or near a church, school or landmark that place has to be mentioned in the lead somewhere.

But I think I understand what you are saying in the first reference you made.

It is something I probably would not pick up right away because I have written a thousand of those type leads, but it can be considered spin to a degree I guess if it is proven somehow the facts of the story or incident is being manipulated to persuade public opinion.

That might the case in the examples you provided.

The news media in Illinois is full of shyt...

It's sad how mucht the media here will spin a story to fit "its" agenda. Not sure who is pulling the strings, but you can tell when a story is sooooo one sided it's ridiculous. Especially if it's about politics.

it's sad.

As far as happenings around HBCU's...

I'm still mad JSU installed metal detectors in Dixon hall a couple of years ago b/c of a shooting that happened NEAR campus but not on campus. Do you know how hard it is to "sell" a university where folks already have stereotypes in their head about it (b/c it's a HBCU in Mississippi) and then have to explain metal detectors in a dormitory?!?!

Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University both had those shootings/killings on their campus that made national news....you think they added metal detectors on their campus?!?!

I'on know Delock. They seem to have reported this the same way they reported the UH thing. They said NEAR TSU and that bus stop is about as near you can get to TSU. You could get a 2 year old to throw a rock and hit TSU property from that bus stop.

I don't think there was a better way to describe the location.

Point blank the media is horrible. I am still fuming at the Clarion Ledger over my situation. They basically tried to crucify us and give us a guilty verdict before we even went to trial. Then, they misquoted my father and me on multiple occasions. However, I wasn’t first. What I saw the CL do to those basketball players falsely accused of rape is wrong. There ere opinion pieces printed every other week attacking these young men’s character. :shame:

The clarion ledger, much like the rest of the mainstream media has simply become part of a modern day lynch mob, where the reputations of people and institutions are destroyed daily. That is why I do not shed one tear over the troubles of the newspaper industry. I say let them all fail….

Man, ya'll are cruel on the media. I'm not saying there isn't any truth to what ya'll are saying. But the faces of news executives are not the same color as us-- not as a whole. There are few minorities in the media field compared to the masses and even fewer in executive roles.
They will continue to tell the stories they want to tell, because they have power in print and in the airwaves.

We can't control what they put out there, but we can strategically control some messages through effective PR.

Delock, if you don't like how TSU is always given as a landmark in negative stories, contact your university's PR/communications office. They should be bothered by it. Some things can be changed with having a good relationship with (print) editors, TV producers and (broadcast) assignment editors. For every negative story, there needs to be another positive story pitched and picked up! And if TV has mentioned your school as a location near a crime scene, call the stations and ask for a producer (make sure you get the name and remember it). Give them the correction or ask if the location can be mentioned differently. Depending on your approach and talking to the right person, it can be changed for the next telecast.
These media folks have what's called "budget meetings" at least twice a day to determine what goes on/in TV or newspapers.

In other cases, they're going to say/write what they want, and there's not much you can do about it.
We really don't have to just sit and let the media say/print whatever they want. You can hold them accountable. But it's 'gon take getting off your butt to voice your concerns to the RIGHT people.

It HAS to be better than that paper in Montgomery. :smh:

nah, we might not have a Josh Moon out to destroy us like you guys do but we have a newspaper with an agenda and it is sickening..:shame::shame:

Now, that I am out of town, I check the CL for updates on little stuff and the Jackson Free Press for any in-depth reporting I want to read

Man the CL had to recant two stories last year. Both were updates on the website of shootings at JSU. I mentined it on here. Both instances were several streets over from campus. After several bloggers got hot the stories changed with the actual street addresses.

Bastards...

Judging by these comments it looks like I picked the right career path. :scared:

Our newspaper is struggling just like everyone else right now. I am one of the new hires at my job. So if there is a need for layoffs, I will be one of the first one to go and there will be no minorities in the entire county covering news.

But I understand how folks feel about the media. My best friend hates the media and tells me about it every chance he gets. He says I am a member of the paparazzi.

Now I know how clean MLB players feel being lumped in with PED users. And there is nothing you can do to change the perception except for trying every day to report the best news as possible.

Aren't you on a rookie beat (crime)? Most veteran reporters RUN from that beat. Your job should be secure.

I have covered a little bit of everything at the paper in just two years. I have been on the court, health, education and general assignment in addition to the crime beat. Our paper only has six reporters and we cover many beats at a time. But my job is not secure at all because we go by seniority for some odd reason.

I like the crime beat only because there is something to write about every day, and you don't have to wait for your editor to give you an assignment. Plus, it helps me understand law enforcement and how it works.

If I get laid off, I don't know what I will do. I know I am 25, but it is darn near impossible to get a job in the industry right now because there are thousands of reporters with far more experience than me.

I probably will go back to school and major in sports management or something and rise to be SWAC president.

You're outside of Cook County aren't you? Up north right?

I think I remember you posting an article you wrote about a police officer that got hit in the head with a hammer by those folks that were fighting/resisiting arrest.

Daily Herald or something like that right?!?!
