McGwire admits using steroids

Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998. McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.
"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

McGwire also used human growth hormone, a person close to McGwire said, speaking on condition of anonymity because McGwire didn't include that detail in his statement.

McGwire's decision to admit using steroids was prompted by his decision to become hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, his final big league team. Tony La Russa, McGwire's manager in Oakland and St. Louis, has been among McGwire's biggest supporters and thinks returning to the field can restore the former slugger's reputation.

"I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come," McGwire said. "It's time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected."

Well, Mark McGwire is not getting into the HOF and he should not either. I will vote for Bonds before McGwire.

Man, Roger Maris' family followed McGwire around the country back in 1998 until that dude broke the record, and now he finally admits to cheating. Boy, how must that family feel today.:shame:

Chickens coming home to roost!!!!

Everyone has went after Bonds, and while they have yet to formally prove anything, the big names are some folks wanted to hide are coming afloat.

A-Rod, Giambi, Clemens, etc. Everybody knew McGwire was juicing. He terribly avoided the question 5 years ago.

If you don't know Bonds did anything, then you are just in denial.

That whole era from 1998-2005 is really tainted; I don't think that anyone in that era who put up significant numbers should be counted for anything until a full investigation to clear up all misconceptions. And they should take away those homeruns he hit when he and Sammy Sosa were going at it. My only question is why did he wait to release that he had been using steroids or performance enhancing drugs (not saying he should have kept it a secret either)?

Nevermind.....I don't think he should get the job. I think that he wanted a clean slate so he could do his job honestly. Plus...I think that the homeruns he hit while competing with Sammy Sosa was a helped in a lot of ways, :kaioken:, by a lot of of pitchers who was just throwing the ball up there so he could "hit it out of the park." If you look at some of those films they were just throwing it up there so slow so he could just have a field day with the long balls; look at some of those films .....

1. Actually the Steroid Era did not start and end during those those years you listed. In my research, the era began in the early 80s and I can't believe for one second that it is over now. You would be naive to think otherwise

2. I think Mark came out now because he is back in baseball. He did not want to deal with having to answer those questions during Spring Training and during the regular season about whether or not he took roids. If he never signs on as the Cardinals hitting coach, we never have this admission. Because he nor the Cardinals don't want to have that cloud hanging over their season.

3. Unless players admit or we have testing evidence, there is no way the public will be able to know for sure which players were using. Plus, as the years go by it will be tough to tell by just looking at an athlete if he is taking PEDs. Some drugs are undetectable. Some don't make you appear like a body builder.

4. As passionate of baseball fan as I am, I don't want the records changed. Those homers happened. Those RBIs occurred. Those hits were gathered. It was part of baseball history. Additionally, there were God knows how many pitchers on the stuff as well. So this is just not limited to sluggers. It involves every player in the game. I think history should be preserved. You can't erase two or three decades because it makes the game look bad. Sometimes history is ugly and unpleasant. But also important. The people need to know about the Steroid Era.

Oh, Im not saying Bonds did or didn't. I just believe so many media folks were cruxifying Bonds while people like Clemmons and McGwire got a pass.

They were in denial about McGwire!!!

Got caught with Amdro, Lied to baseball about roids, lied to Congress, Lied to the fans about not using anything, and yet he is back in baseball.

Bonds has never tested positive for anything, told MLB he didn't know the oil he was using was a clear form of roids, has stuck to that story, yet he is the only one still in the court system and blackballed from baseball.
You have had multiple players caught using roids after the rules was set and has come back to baseball in the same time bonds has been treated like a serial killer.

Pete rose and McGwire will make the HOF before these crit's vote bonds in.
I'm glad Bonds has turned his back on this game and is living his life happy without it.:smh:

I saw Bonds at a restaurant out in Beverly Hills back in June of 08 and he looked happy. He's probably glad to be away from the game and the bs he had to deal with. His wife is beautiful. He did put on some pounds though. He had a gut.

:lmao:
I noticed that gut too.
A sure sign he is enjoying his retirement and not worried about even trying to come back to that crap.

exactly!

Not really. Bonds was a science project to. You are going to tell me that Bonds did not know the oil he was rubbing on his legs were not illegal?

Pro athletes, especially one of Bonds' ability, do not take supplements or agents without knowing what they contain and how it benefits them. Bonds became upset that McGwire and Sosa were stealing the headlines when he knew those two clowns were not legit.

So he shows up the next season with 35 pounds of muscle and slapped the pill all over the joint to prove a point. The man went from hitting 35-40 homers to 70 in the toughest ballpark in all the National League (PAC Bell Park in San Francisco) to go yard in. Every player from the mid-80s until now is suspect.
