I am gonna have to agree with you on this. I have never understood why it is necessary to play the national anthem before a sporting event anyway.

Whether someone is present for that raggedy-ass anthem or not has
nothing to do with them respecting and supporting those who served.

It all started during the World Series, which was played during World War II. The song was reportedly played in an effort to boost morale.
