Who was the Band Captain in 84?

Wassup ChicagoJag?

Man, I don't know the origins of the word, I just knew that if we were not on point with how we looked/dressed, the bruhs used to call us alaganza!

JR,
Smith or Devoe could probably remember. I remember them saying it when we were on line. I think it was some words abbreviated and put together to create a word meaning you dressed out of fashion, but I can't remember the 2 or 3 words. I think they even came up with a song for it.. lol

Peace...

I cannot wait to hear what it really meant; I think ChicagoJag is going to "educate" us on this .....:noidea:

I expect the same response... :wavey:

I shoot Devo and e-mail, but I don't know how fast he'll respond or if he will remember, being older than me... lol

I may see if I have Jesse's number also. I bet he remembers...

Peace...

"Alaganza" was a term coined during my years in the Juke. I don't know exactly who first said it but it is one of these people ...

* Bro. Ken "Cherry Head" Turner, ZN Spring 77 (Chapter Prez)
* Bro. Darrell "Cool Breeze" Saulsby, ZN Spring 78 (My D.P. - He was also the DM in 78 and 79)
* Bro. Charles "P-Knutt" Durggin, ZN Spring 78 (R.I.P.)
* Bro Darius "Darth Vader" Emanuel, ZN Spring 78 (My C.B. & L.B.)

It was indeed a term for people who were dressed in a "jacked-up" way and it is actually a butchering of the word "Eleganza."

Eleganza was a company who published a catalog of rather ghetto fashions in the 70's. Whenever someone was dressed loud, tacky, and ghetto, they were said to be looking "Alaganza."

Here is an example of the Eleganza Catalog ...

I remember hearing about that catalog. I hadn't heard of it before the explaination of the term alaganza. I remember some more surrounding the ala part. Now, that you've shown this, I think the ganza came from the real eleganza. Any other catalogs. Maybe it a combination of two of the 70's/80's catalogs.

whew... Memories. That was some funny stuff. And to think after all I've heard about Darius, to think he had something to do with humor also... lol

Peace...

You gotta understand the way our people talk. The word was "ELE-ganza" but you know folk don't say the right word half the time and after a while, it came out as "ALA-ganza" or "Ganza" for short. :pimp:

And yes, Darius was definitely a character although I heard he went "WAY over the top" (wild as he77!) in the two years after I left Southern. :retard:

LOL. You shole is right Frat. Especially the New Orleans contingent and some of S. La folks that had that accent. It took me almost a year to understand what the hell my Crab bros and some of my LBs were saying. I would look at them like>>:xeye::retard: when they would pronounce some words.:lmao:

BT done fell the "blank" out!!! CJ, you done made me spit kool aid all over my monitor showing that catalog.

My people, my people, my people! That is some funny "stuff" right there!

I just know some of y'all were wearing that "vinyl trim suit"!!!...:lmao:

oh I know all to well... I loving tease to this date... "Say may bruh, you got some change... I need to change my earl". "You need to change what?" "My earl" "Your earl" "What is earl?" "Earl. You know, oil!!" "Oh, OIL!" "Yeah, that's what I said, earl!!!". LOL

Though the pronounciation deal is a southern thing more than the south LA deal. I loved the New Orleans and the different and as impressive south LA accents and lingo, yeah! You ain't gone find none like it nowhere, no. lol. How you doing, boo? Cher, you looking good.. yeah! Yo Farly! Hey Cousin!

I remember the abbreviated use of ganza. Did you see that dude? He was looking all ganza... rotflol...

Perhaps, that is all it was - pronounciation. I just thought I remember Helmon saying it was a combination word. But, I could be crossing up another term that isn't coming to mind. With you alaganza ***... Man, that was some funny stuff back then. I'm like BT, I'm getting cracked up on the memories alone...

Thanks for this one... lol

I still do.

"Say lil laady, don't do me that, no!"

"Hey boo, you go to party? It was sumpin' good, yeah!"

And my favorite of all time ... the whole notion that "Pop" (yeah, I'm a northerner) = "Cold Drink" in Louisiana!

When I got to SU, it was funny to hear people talk about "making groceries"...the folks from That City ANSWERING themselves...I.E.

Don't do us like that, I know I used to be like "You'll hard of understanding or something" I guess we were used to everyone understanding everything we used to say..

I had the longest time trying to figure out why this chick was laughing so long because I said.."I need to make groceries yah".....Asking me.."How you going to make groceries?" I really thought she was dumb....lol
Then she called herself educating me why I was wrong (well why she thought I was wrong) I mean I been saying a lot of that stuff since 79' or 80'.. And now in 96 you telling me it's wrong?!?! Get the fugg out of here....lol

we use to say it in Mississippi also. But, when folks hit me with that, I got smart with them and said that since we grew our vegetables and raised our meat on the farm that I was in due bounds saying "making" groceries... lol

Peace...
