Attendance to impact Las Vegas Football Classic

By ROYCE FEOUR
REVIEW-JOURNAL

The football teams and alumni from Southern University and North Carolina A&T will have an added incentive for the first Las Vegas Football Classic on Sept. 13 at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Jonathan Simon, executive director of the Classic, announced at a news conference at the Rio on Thursday that the school with the most alumni attending the game will be invited back for the 2004 game.

A similar game involving historically black colleges was played last year before an announced crowd of 22,537 at Sam Boyd Stadium, where Grambling defeated Tennessee State 49-14 in the Silver Dollar Classic.

This year's game is being promoted by Urban Sports & Entertainment Group, which was involved in the television end of last year's Silver Dollar Classic, and New Creation Productions of Las Vegas, which is headed by Simon.

Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events, one of the game's sponsors, said about half of last year's crowd came from out of state.

"This will be such a culturally diverse weekend," he said.

The list of official events attached to the Classic includes a Sept. 11 concert, a golf tournament, fashion show, alumni/team banquet and a Battle of the Bands at the Thomas & Mack Center on Sept. 12. Game-day activities include a tailgate party and vendor marketplace at Sam Boyd.

Christensen said he expected much of the out-of-state crowd to arrive Thursday and stay throughout the weekend.

"Our goal is 30,000 at the game," he said.

Said Simon: "It is important for Las Vegas' African-American kids and other kids to experience the culture when it comes to rivalries they have in black colleges."

Southern and North Carolina A&T, both 6-6 last year, are guaranteed $375,000 apiece.

Simon said five Clark County high school seniors will receive $2,000 scholarships from proceeds from the game to attend a black college of their choosing.

Creative Marketing ..... not a bad idea, but they should have looked at last year's attendance and the effect that ticket prices could have had on it.

EFFECT TICKET PRICES DID HAVE..... THE GOAL SHOULD BE MORE THAN 30K. THE NUMBER OF BCF DRAWS IS MINUS 1 NOW SO I'M SURE THEY WILL START TO HAVE A CONSTANT HOME TEAM. THAT WAS THE GOAL OF THE PROMOTERS OF THE SILVER DOLLAR CLASSIC.

My questioin would be how do you accurately count alumni from each program. The majority of these fans that attend these classics with different schools usually are there to take in the Black College Football experience and are not alumni or current students of those particular schools. The attendance goal should be much higher than that but I don't think that Sam Boyd can hold that much. If you get the classic going strong with different schools attending it will become much like a bowl game and the locals will get more involve. It also gives other schools from our conferance and others a have a opportuniy to play in this game.

Ok, Someone from SU must be on the board over there cuz SU will definitely outnumber NCAT. lol

NCAT couldn't even bring fans to ATL when we played them and I know they want travel to Vegas.

Now imgaine if they make this game between 2 SWAC schools that will draw. Now that will be a Classic in Vegas!!!

He said he hoped the this year's game and surrounding events including a Sept. 11 concert, golf tournament, fashion show, alumni-team banquet, and a Sept. 12 battle of the bands at the Thomas & Mack Center, would stir interest.

Officials plan a game-day tailgate party and vendor marketplace at Sam Boyd Stadium, and hope to draw 30,000 fans.

Southern and North Carolina A&T each went 6-6 last year. They are guaranteed $375,000 for the Las Vegas game.

This is unfair to the AGGIES. They dont have the fan or Alumni support in the South West like the Jags do. If this game was in D.C. then the advantage would A&T's. If they are going to do this, the location needs to be Centralized, like in ST. LOUIS, Nashville, or ATL.

Ill be there, wearing an "A&T" t-shirt with a "Jaguar" Throwback cap. Im there to enjoy BCF and BCB.

Yeah, it's really easy for most SU fans to get to that game. Just a hop, skip and a jump from Louisiana.....

Let's do SU and J-State next year. The two biggest crowds in BCF.

I don't know that either team (SU in 04) would want to give up their home gate for that game.....

According to the promoter, NC A&T has scheduled their alumni conference in Vegas for the same weekend. Plenty of Aggies should be there.

I was thinking the same thing PNeck....WTF is bandfan talking about anyway. Not fair, who's damn problem is that? SU is suppose to feel sorry cuz A&T's fan base doesn't come close to ours? If they don't travel such as SUnites, oh well....their bad.

Not true. When JSU played "A&T" in Atlanta, the aggies had problems selling tickets for the game. Their fans don't travel well at all.

A&T-JSU 35,742
A&T-SCSU 34,261

JSU made a difference of about 1,500 fans b/w the two peach state classics.

Congrats.

BTW if we don't travel well why do we continue to be extended invitations to classics. (Circle City, Riverfront, Portland, Las Vegas)?

Toppdogg,

Just because you get invited to classics does not mean that you were the first choice and besides, your school does not get invited very often anyway. A second year classic normally draws better than a first year classic because people know more about it. JSU made the first Peach State Classic a success...and SC State is a lot closer to ATL than JSU.

...TP, you are somewhat correct, however, the Portland game last year when A&T was invited drew only 10,012 in it's "second" year of existence. The Inaugural VanPort Classic(with the ICON) in '01 drew 16,171(PGE Park Capacity is 20,000).

...Just an F.Y.I.

...Can't you ever respond without "trying" to smack??? My point was correcting your statement about 2nd year Classics. It was your mis-statement is why I commented F.Y.I....I just happen to back it up with figures instead of "rhetoric" (smh;dayum...some people)

Correct my statement??? How?? You did not correct me. You only gave an example to the contrary of my statement. Few things are the same 100% of the time. I was not trying to smack. I was just telling you the correct those that you have the ability to correct. That does not include TP. My original statement and opinon remain the same.
