Lanier Point guard Ellis will declare for NBA draft

The one thing that boggles my mind is does any high school program have a weight program??? They producing all these anorexic beanpoles. Think about this also, if a kid knows he is going to go pro, why not start lifting and getting your body right before u go, to give u ever edge that u need (i.e. Lebron), man these kids aren't smart at all. The only cat that i saw that look like he could do something in the NBA was that Gerald Green cat that won the dunk competition, but that's about it. My question also is if it's about money, y not go to college and wait for perhaps a weaker draft class and along with getting bigger stronger and smarter, u can asure urself to be a lottery pick, because this is one of the stronger drafts in a minute.

From what I saw. Ellis should have gone to college for one or two years. He is a little frail now and he could have used two years to put on the weight..

Why should Ellis go to college when he can go to the NBA put on weight and get a paycheck?

Why sit on the pine and just collect a check when u can got to college and hone your skills then START at some point and EARN your check :D

So that he can learn something other than a crossover and a dunk. Because that's what half of the young players know today.

Magic, Bird, Jordan, Isaiah all had fundermentals as well being great players. I do not want to pay hundreds of dollars to see an NBA Game so that young players can sit on the bench and get paid. The draft use to be about players coming in and helping a team get over the top. Today is now drafting players to develop them like the NBA is a developmental leauge. The same goes for the Euro players that are not ready either. Look at the big boy from Europe that is with the Pistons. I bet you cant even remember more than 10 times in two years that you have actually seen him in a game. :smash:

He can hone his skills while making a check in practice. That will be more valuable learning than 2 years of college BALL.

Not really, because if some other player comes into camp and outshines him because he is so green then the team will sour on him and he will never see the lineup. There have been several of these HS phenoms who have not been able to get on the floor. At least he could get some PT in college. I know , I know it is all about the money. If it was, he would have hit the weight room on his own. Lanier does have weights. Like I said Lebron knew what he wanted. So he worked on his body in HS. If Ellis was so sure about turning pro then he would have worked out and developed a D. Wade type of body.
So he will take the money for 3 years and if he aint ready by then.........guess what. Out the league he goes. He aint a 6'10 or 7 foot project that teams will wait on to develop. He is a guard. Those come a dime a dozen.

JR,
With all that said...NBA contracts are guaranteed....so him even being outshined by another guard will still leave him a millionaire.

True, but we all know these kids will not be able to live off the 3 year deal for the rest of their lives if they get let go after the initial rookie contract. If some of these kids go to school, they will be better prepared and maybe ready to start in the NBA. For example..... NC's Raymond Felton, Wake's Chris Paul and Illinois's Deron Williams will get more of a chance to start or come right off the bench just because they went to school and got more experienced and got bigger. Also most teams will feel like they can trust a rookie like that. Look at how Ben Gordon and Kirt Hinrich in Chicago panned out. School helped them. There has never been a HS point guard come to the NBA and make an impact. So I am saying if he went to school.....and not Ms State either. Then he could play a couple of years and be better off from it. The odds of him getting that second contract and the bigger dollars will be better than it will be for him coming out now. Sebastion Telfair is going to be another bust. He should have went and played a year with Pitino. Heck his stock may have soared on this year's Louisville team since they went far in the Tourney. Who knows maybe he would been the difference similiar to Carmelo Anthony at Syracuse. That one year helped him be the number 3 pick. He wouldn't have been straight out of HS.

I always thought he would...too many Marbury (his cousin) comparisons. But to the contrary he actually started a number of games toward the end of the season.

There was a high school PG who came in this season and made an impact with the Clippers....Shaun Livingston. But then again he's 6'7

3 year deal. The only thing that is guaranteed is somebody with a college degree will rob him of most of his money.

This kid should go and learn at least 2 or 3 years from some of these great college coaches. The NBA is not a place to learn how to shoot free throws. Didn't Detroit draft an 18 year old a year ago with their 1st pick? I don't think this guys is on the playoff roster.

College is not a place to learn to shoot free throws either....ask Shaq and Duncan. The guy Detroit drafted was foreign so he shouldn't be in the conversation.

As far as someone with a college degree robbing him of his money...kinda like the leaders of the NCAA, huh?

That's exactly what I am talking about. Livingston is somebody they will be patient with like folks were with T-Mac since he is 6'7. Those types are always compared to be the next Jordan, Magic, KG, Kobe and now Lebron. But the smaller guys will not get that kind of pass if they don't produce quickly. We had the same thought process about Telfair. That dummy quit in the middle of HS. SMH. I guess his cousin Marbury will have to finance him when he is out the NBA.

Maybe but he should have enough left over with the shoe deal he has. Oh yeah...his side of the family had a rift with Marbury's side and they hadn't spoken in a couple of years (before he got to the NBA, at least).

You talking about Shaq and Duncan, who are 2 of the top 50 players to ever play in the NBA. As for the Detroits #1 pick, he was 18 had experience playing professional basketball.

I say feed him to Nash, T-Mac, Kobe so they can pick their teeth with his arse.

Yeah, he should go to some college like Felipe Lopez and go from sure-fire 1st rounder to free agent. Why would a kid who can get drafted in the 1st round go to college??? Give up the certain for the uncertain.

The team that drafts him will be patient with him. They aren't in the mood to give away millions of dollars. He can go to Miss. State and never get drafted.

One other thing. Which one of you "he should go to school" advocates would have gone to college if you could do what you majored in college straight out of high school??? Hell I know I woulda had a press conference announcing my intentions to practice law straight out of high school.

I'm not a "go to college advocate", I'm a NBA fan. If I wanted to see high school kids play, then I would pay $3 on Friday night to see Eastside High versus Booker T Washington. The NBA shouldn't expect me to pay $45/ticket for a family of 4 to see a 150lb 1st round point guard get schooled by a NBA verteran journeyman.

It would seem to me that you should voice your concerns to David Stern and the NBA, and ask teams to stop drafting these kids. We certainly shouldn't ask or expect a kid to turn down millions that they can get. And these teams sure don't seem to mind drafting them.

Unless you have AI type talent which is rare then you will struggle at the pg position. AI also could rise above the rim when he first got to the NBA and was super fast. But again I am sure we all agree to disagree. Ellis should head to a good college program like Kentucky, Duke, NC, Michigan St under coaches he can develop under. Just my opinion.

I'm not overly excited about him turning pro out of high school. However, I do believe that Monta possess the kind of fundamentals that will allow him to play at the highest level (NBA) right now. He probably won't become an AI, or Wade in his FIRST year but he WILL become a star and he WILL NOT be a bust. FINALLY, HE WILL BECOME RICH PLAYING THE GAME HE LOVES!!!!!!

And in this case, I believe that an NBA team will get their money's worth by drafting him.

ONCE YOU'VE TAKEN AWAY DREAMS, YOU'VE TAKEN AWAY THE ESSENCE OF LIVING.

But you are still asking me to pay $45 a ticket to see a high school game. This is the NBA, not the NDBL. If I want to see High School Ball. I would go to see Highland Springs & L.C. Byrd for $3 Dollars.

David Stern, please allow every NBA team to have a Developmental Team in the NDBL. Guys that are not ready for the NBA is killing the Leauge.

What people don't realize is that everytime a High Schooler or College guy comes in the NBA. A Vet who still can contribute to his team is cut. Ellis is sitting on the bench collecting millions while a good vet who can help his team now is cut.

Why would Ellis come out this year when Raymond Felton of UNC, Chris Paul of Wake Forrest and the Point Guard from Illinois is all in this years draft? Who would you draft? Ellis or the other three I just mentioned? :wavey:

Lanier star confident 1st round his calling

Lanier star confident 1st round his calling

One Internet mock NBA draft has Ellis slipping to 2nd round

By Todd Kelly
[email protected]

One Web site, NBAdraft.net, has him dangling near the very bottom of the first round.

Another, DraftCity.com, predicts he won't be selected until the middle of the second.

Yet if Lanier basketball star Monta Ellis is the least bit discouraged by the Internet pundits and their mock drafts, he isn't letting on. One day after announcing he hopes to play in the NBA next season, the 19-year-old Ellis remains confident his decision will be rewarded on draft night June 28.
Ellis said Tuesday night he plans to sign with New York-based agent Andy Miller in the next few days, a move that would make him ineligible to play college basketball. Ellis, a 6-foot-3 guard and the Parade national Co-Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball in Mississippi, signed scholarship papers last November with Mississippi State.

"I don't look at those things too much," said Ellis of the mock drafts. "It's just somebody judging you on what they think they know about basketball. I know if I get in the gym and keep working at it, I'll be a sure first-round pick."

There appears to be merit in his optimism. While some Internet draft analysts apparently downgraded Ellis for his postseason all-star showing (he averaged an unremarkable 10.5 points and 3.5 assists in two games), at least some in the NBA made up their minds after seeing Ellis in person during his spectacular senior season at Lanier.

The questions ? Is the 175-pound Ellis too skinny for the NBA grind and/or does he lack point guard savvy? ? are a moot point for one executive from an Eastern Conference team. That's the case even as the annual wave of college underclassmen and foreign players, now 50-something strong, toss their names in the hat as the May 14 deadline to enter the draft nears.

"There are no fears," the executive told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. "Monta Ellis has got a world of talent. He plays the game the right way ? and that's always your concern when it comes to high school players.

"I don't think anybody is asking these kids to come save their franchise. He's a talented young player who can add a lot to your organization... There's a very good chance he could be gone by the end of the lottery."

Bob Gibbons, a long-time basketball recruiting analyst based in North Carolina, talks to NBA scouts and personnel on a regular basis. Gibbons thinks the chances are "none whatsoever" that Ellis could get passed over in the first round, where each of the 30 players chosen receive guaranteed three-year contracts worth millions of dollars.

"If Sebastian Telfair can come out and be a high draft pick..." Gibbons said. "I'm not an expert on what the NBA is looking for, but I think Monta Ellis is bigger, shoots it better and has more longterm potential."

Telfair, a celebrated 6-0 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., who is also represented by Miller, was chosen by Portland with the 13th pick of the first round last June. He averaged 6.8 points and 3.3 assists and started 26 games for the Trail Blazers.

Both Gibbons and Lanier coach Thomas Billups believe Telfair's play this season helps to convince NBA general managers and coaches that a comparatively small high school guard can make the huge jump to the NBA.

"I think that helped a lot," Billups said. "There are plenty of people in the NBA not as tall as Monta. When it comes to basketball, I think Monta will be able to handle everything they throw at him."

Billups, too, doesn't expect Ellis to slip out of the first round. Last year, nine high school seniors or prep school players declared for the draft. Eight, including Al Jefferson of Prentiss, were chosen in the first round. The ninth, former McComb star Jackie Butler, was cashing an NBA paycheck by February.

Billups said representatives from approximately two dozen NBA teams called or visited Lanier to inquire about Ellis, who is among three prep players thus far to declare for the draft.

"With as many NBA people who have seen Monta play, they would be honest and tell us he wouldn't be a first-rounder," Billups said. "If he wasn't going to go in the first round, I wouldn't let it happen to him."

Ellis, who is scheduled to graduate from Lanier on May 25, plans to work out for NBA teams in the coming weeks at Lanier and in various league cities. Boston, Toronto, Memphis, Detroit, New Jersey and Denver are among the teams that seem most interested, Billups said.

Ellis isn't sure where he'll end up. His immediate goal is rehabilitating his left knee following minor surgery on April 14. He'll be at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., the rest of this week. Soon, he'll be looking forward to finding out his next destination on June 28.

"When that comes, of course it will be exciting," said Ellis, who said he made up his mind to test the NBA waters after Lanier's victory in the 4A championship game last month. "I know there are people who don't want me to succeed, but there are a lot of people who do, too. Right now, I'm just taking everything in stride. Like they say ? I'm taking it one day at a time."

You don't get it. Ticket holders/buyers have voiced their concerns and that is why Stern has proposed the 20 year old age limit. For every Kobe, there are 10 Leon Smith (1st Round Draft Pick out of high school that didn't play 1 second in the NBA). Leon wasn't good enough to make the squad, nor good enough to make it in Europe. Fans were upset Dallas wasted a 1st round pick.

Again, high school kids play on Friday nights for $3.00. Professional NBA players play on Friday night for $45.00.

DA Sperm,
This year in the NBA Howard, JR Smith, Josh Smith, and Al Jefferson produce while Telfair and Livingstone was coming on late in the year. I think Swift and two other high school guy didn;t get much playing time.

Now I will agree with Jack,Felton, D.Williams, Paul, and possiibly Gilchrest coming out why would you come out. Beside that the kid is hurting and needs some rest.

Hey If I was a GM I would rather draft the foreign guys like Ginalobi, Parker, the guy from the bull Nicholi, and others. They can come in and play immediatiely.

Schit Sperm, I gotta move to Dallas, cuz the cheapest ticket here in DC is $55 dollars (outside of the 1,000 $20 nose bleed seats), and now that the Wizards have made the playoffs it's going to be more expensive.

From what I've seen of that kid, he'll be better served not going to the NBA right now, but the problem is Ellis like others only see today, and not tomorrow, they could care less if they're actually ready or not, all they know is somebody is going to pay me millions, because I can score 20+ points a game in high school. Somebody is going to give them a million bucks, they're going to take it, and until the NBA changes their drafting practices, it's going to stay that way.

NICE

That is one of the points i was trying to make. If u trying to REALLY get paid, atleast be smart about it. U got Chris Paul, Ray Felton, Deron Williams, Garcia, and the rest of them cats coming out, and u want to come out too??? Come on Monta u got to be smarter than that. Why not wait a year or two years from now and come out when u are assured of a top 5 pick, that's if u REALLY want to get paid.

The dude that made the Felipe Lopez comment, what u fail to realize is a lot of supposed "high school phenoms" are a lot of HYPE! Plus it takes more than just talent to succeed, u got to have mental toughness, and that's what gets alot of those kids. What u saying basically is go run and get a check before the NBA finds out the flaws in your game.
