Mississippi State signee Monta Ellis will declare for the NBA draft instead of going to play for the Bulldogs, Ellis told ESPN.com on Monday afternoon.

The Lainier (Miss.) High scoring guard is rated as the second best player in the high school class of 2005, according to scouthoops.com. He said he is in the process of interviewing agents and will make a final decision in the coming days.

"This has always been a dream of mine," Ellis said. "This is the best move for me to put my name in the draft."

Ellis becomes the fourth high school player to officially declare for the draft, joining Oklahoma State signee Gerald Green (Gulf Shores Academy in Houston, Texas), unsigned Andray Blatche of South Kent Prep School (Conn.) and Memphis signee Shawne Williams (Laurinburg Prep, N.J.). Green is probably the highest-rated of the bunch but has said he would keep his options open and not sign with an agent.

There could be more forthcoming as Washington signee Martell Webster (Seattle Prep School), Georgia signee Louis Williams (South Gwinnett High in Snellville, Ga.), unsigned Brandon Rush (Mount Zion Academy in Durham, N.C.), Kansas signee Julian Wright (Homewood-Flossmoor High in Ill.) and Alabama signee Richard Hendrix (Athens High in Ala.) all have decisions to make. Eight high school seniors went in the first round in the 2004 NBA draft.

Ellis said he told the Bulldogs that this was always a possibility. He said he wants to prove to NBA teams that he can play point guard and defend taller and stronger point guards. A year ago, high school point guards Shaun Livingston and Sebastian Telfair went in the lottery to the Clippers (four) and Blazers (13), respectively.

"I can shoot better than those two guys," Ellis said in trying to sell himself as an NBA point guard. "I can show that I'm an all-around basketball player. I'm not critical of other players' games but I know I can be seen as a better high school player coming in, even though those two guys are great players."

Mississippi State is set at point guard for 2005-06 with Gary Ervin. But they needed Ellis to be a scoring wing, something they don't have for next season. The Bulldogs continue to get burned by players leaving early. They have lost Jonathan Bender, Travis Outlaw, Mario Austin and now Ellis before either arriving or finishing their career with the Bulldogs.

"One of these days we'll be able to get one of these kids to stay home," Mississippi State assistant Robert Kirby said.

Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said the Bulldogs are still hoping that Ellis won't sign with an agent to keep his options open of still going to school. Ellis is not considered a lock for the first round, but he could move up through workouts over the next two months. Ellis was expected to workout at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Stansbury said Ellis would have helped offset the youth movement because he was such an explosive scorer.

The Bulldogs did add Reginald Delk of North Side High in Jackson, Tenn., who will be counted on more to score. The Bulldogs lose starting wing Shane Power as well as forward Lawrence Roberts, a former SEC player of the year. Oak Hill Academy (Va.) shooting guard Jamont Gordon will have an impact as well. The Bulldogs are also expecting plenty of production from Luthern Christian (Philadelphia) center Vernon Goodridge.

Up until now I thought this was a no brainer for him to leave. But I am not reading a lot of positive things now. I think maybe he should not hire an agent yet. He needs to make sure he is in the first round or all of this is for nothing.

Oh well, there's another one that got away from Mississippi St. Seriously that man should have went to school. The NBA is gonna punish him physically, and i do wish him the best though.

I been telling ya'll he need to go to school, if only at least one year like Carmelo, that dude is a toothpick! I don't understand the money will be there, if he goes to school he could be a number 1 overall instead of an end of the lottery pick.

U know he ain't going before Bogut, May, McCants, Marvin Williams, Gerald Green, the foreign big dude, Deron Williams, Salim Stoudemire, Hakim Warrick, I mean should I go on??? I swear I wonder who be advising these kids, and where are his parents???

I just got one question, what happens if the league goes through with the 20 year old minimum mandate, since he is currently interviewing agents, he can give college up. (Another Clarett and Mike Williams case)

While not a lock, he's a pretty good bet to go in the first round. He's a better scorer than most of the guards coming out already, plus he has greater upside. Surely a team will take a chance on him around pick 20 and let him sit and get bigger for a few years. Right now is his best shot because playing at MSU has a way of reducing your draft stock. Just look at Mario Austin if u want proof.

And he doesn't have to worry about the under 20 rule. That probably won't come into effect until the next CBA, if then.

Come on bruh u can't honestly say that State has had that top flight of talent come through there.

Mario Austin really is in the same boat with Lawrence Roberts, a good not great player.
Erick Dampier?? Dontae Jones?? Darryl Wilson?? surely not Tang Hamilton???

that is my point, State really hasn't had any talent like that to come through Starkville. U made my point for me.

It may have had something to do with EVERYBODY leaving Mississippi State... what the hell is the coach th ere doing to make everyone want to leave. 3 people already are leaving and transferring to other schools.

Yep and we have our fingers crossed for one. lol.

This guy has been playing basketball for ever and a day. He led his team as a ninth grader. His high school coach says that Ellis is the greatest player he's ever coached. I expect to see Monta crossing over the NBA's best and scoring on them. Look out because he will be an impact NBA player.

LOL. He will get his arse handed to him the moment his has to play against the D. Wade's, Allen Iverson's, Steve Nash's of the world. High School ball aint the same as the NBA. He doesn't have a NBA body like a Raymond Felton or Rashad Mccants. Even Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul -Raoof went to school and got better. He is going to have to play point in the NBA because he aint big enough to play wing and go against the bigger guards. Oh well he will be another wash out. SMH. Point guards need to go to college first.

The majority of all the McDonald's All Americans were on the skinny side this year. They all need to go to college and gain some weight.

Worst kept secret in Mississippi.

Just like Bender and Outlaw, everybody knew this guy would never set foot on Mississippi St. campus. Heck, I believe the coach even knew. That's why he continued to recruit POINT GUARDS the whole time.

The point guard that was looking to transfer decided to stay after they got that point guard for OAK HILL to sign.

I'm sure this guy hasn't played more basketball than the average high school senior that will go off the college to play ball. This is why the NBA should hurry and to to the 20-year old mandate. If he is an impact player in the NBA, then the NBA is a weak basketball league.

From what I saw. Ellis should have gone to college for one or two years. He is a little frail now and he could have used two years to put on the weight..

Another High Schooler that thinks that the NBA & the money is going to pack up and leave. So they think that they got to get the money now.

That's why the NBA is so weak now. Too many young guys that don't have an understanding of the game yet. Carolina guys leave all because they win one title. If Ellis does well right away. That tells us how weak the NBA-Non Ballars Association really is.

Don't blame these kids for wanting the guranteed money right away. Blame the league for drafting them. Do you really think the NFL would have an influx of Highschool players if they didn't have the 3 year rule? Of course not. The way the NBA is set up now, its to a kids advantage to come in out of highschool if he's a first round pick. Even if he does nothing but sit for the first 3-4 years. 2 years at MSU wouldn't boost his draft stock that much anyway. It might move him from the late first round to the mid-first.

I doubt that.

The point guard position is way different than a foward/center spot and even a bonafide swingman G/F. Ellis can shoot but he will not be able to outmuscle the NBA point guards to penetrate and hit the medium range shot. Look how D. Wade handles his business at point or a young Gary Payton. Ellis went off on HS players. Not NBA players. Although the league is weak, it is a different ball game compared to AAU and HS ball. Tony Parker was way ahead of this kid when came to the NBA. Even then he still got schooled his rookie year. At least Parker had been playing pro in Europe against older competition.
Skinny point guards normally have a hard time even when they go to college and then turn pro.

AI and that Steve Nash are the exceptions and look how AI stay hurt. Ellis doesn't strike me as having AI toughness from the couple of games I saw him play. Plus AI played for John Thompson and in the Big East against superior competition before heading to the NBA.
I wish the Ellis kid luck cause he is a Jackson, Ms product. But I don't care how many points he has scored in HS. He aint ready for the NBA. With Chris Paul of Wake Forest, Raymond Felton of NC and Deron Williams of Illinois coming out, not to mention the kid from Ga Tech. Ellis may find himself in the low first round. This draft is deeper than the last 2 due to all the NC players leaving and the fact that alot players stayed in school last year and now are leaving. Not to mention we have no idea who the NBA teams are looking at overseas.

AH ....JR ...........I know they are just a LITTLE bigger now than when they came into the league but ................

RIP HAMILTON IS NOT THE MOST MUSCULAR PERSON IN THE NBA.........NEITHER IS IVERSON.

Would college help him ..........OF COURSE. But this guy is NOT GOING TO BE A WASHOUT NOR A BENCH RIDER IN 2 YEARS. BET THAT.

Louis Williams of South Gwinnett in Snellville, GA needs to gain some weight too before making the jump to the NBA.

This years class needs to go to college. I see none that can make a difference on an NBA Team for this year.

As long as they can make a difference in their own wallets I'm all for it.

But Rip Hamilton is also 6'7 and was very athletic and it took him some time too. That's what I am saying. It is a little easier for the taller guys. Point guards are different. Look at the JJ Reddick kid from Duke. He can shoot lights out and even he knows better than to try the NBA just yet. I know everybody at home is pulling for this kid. But the deck is stacked against him at that position. Raymond Felton is way better than this kid, so is Chris Paul and so is Deron Williams who by the way is 6'3 and physical. These kids have biceps. Even when Jason Williams of Duke came out he had guns on the arms. He was muscular. So I guess Ellis will sit the bench for 3 years and get bigger while his draft mates pass him by, because they went to school and bulked up. If he was so serious about the NBA, he would have done that already. Look how Lebron was looking coming out of HS. Amare Stoudamire as well. Not to mention NC's freshman Marvin Williams wasn't skinny coming out of HS.

Unless you have AI type talent which is rare then you will struggle at the pg position. AI also could rise above the rim when he first got to the NBA and was super fast. But again I am sure we all agree to disagree. Ellis should head to a good college program like Kentucky, Duke, NC, Michigan St under coaches he can develop under. Just my opinion.
