DURHAM -- N.C. Central University has hired Kawachi A. Clemons to join the university's marching band, the NCCU Sound Machine, as assistant director of bands.

Clemons' training in music education and performing arts has allowed him to work as production assistant for both the 71st Annual Academy Awards and Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999.

At NCCU, Clemons will serve as director of percussion and teach courses in the music industry degree program.

He has a background in arranging, composing, conducting and as a percussionist.

"One of the things that attracted me to NCCU was the incredible potential the band and department of music possess," Clemons said. "I believe my experiences will provide to be extremely useful in the music industry program."

Clemons earned his bachelor's degree in music education from Florida A&M University in 1998. He received his master of music degree in performing arts production from Florida International University in 2000. He returned to FIU as a special projects coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services. He most recently worked as band director and music teacher for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools System.
