White, 21, was charged with possession of a weapon on an educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner by Jackson State police early Friday morning.

According to records, White was booked into the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond at 7:28 a.m. He posted bond about 8 p.m. according to the sheriff's department.

JSU basketball coach Teverster Anderson would not say whether White would remain on the basketball team.

"The JSU communications people have told me it's still under investigation," Anderson said Friday evening. "I don't want to comment on much else until we figure out exactly what happened."

White, Mississippi's Mr. Basketball for Provine High School in 2003, averaged 7.8 points, 2.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season as JSU's starting point guard.

White has had a history of trouble at Jackson State, though none as serious as Friday's incident.

He punched a Southern University player in the face during a basketball game and received a three-game suspension during his freshman season.

Last year, he was suspended for two exhibition games after breaking an unspecified team rule.

But Anderson said White had been a model citizen since last season.

"I really am surprised by all this," Anderson said. "I haven't had any trouble with (White) in a long time."

Anthony Dean, JSU spokesman, said Friday's incident was still under investigation. The university would comment once the investigation was complete.

Suspended White's future much in doubt

JSU point guard must go through hearing before athletics addressed

Accused of wielding a gun on Jackson State's campus, Charlie White's days with the Tigers' basketball team may be short-lived.

The junior point guard is facing two felony weapons charges stemming from his arrest on campus early Friday morning.

White is on temporary suspension from campus pending a hearing by the university's judicial council on Oct. 1, according to JSU spokesman Anthony Dean.

"At that time, they'll decide his future with the school," Dean said. "He is not allowed on school grounds for classes, basketball or anything else."

According to a police report, the JSU department of public safety witnessed several fights during a pre-alumni dance on campus just after midnight Friday.

During the fighting, White allegedly fired four shots into the air with a .380-caliber handgun in the parking lot of Alexander Hall.

He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner. He posted a $10,000 bond from the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond on Friday evening.

The first charge is the most serious, carrying up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted. The latter charge carries three months in prison and a $500 fine.

JSU basketball coach Tevester Anderson said he has not spoken with White since White's arrest.

"I've called his cell phone and left messages, but he hasn't returned my call," Anderson said. "I've had a meeting with the rest of the team to stress the kind of behavior I expect on campus. Nothing like this should ever happen."

Tigers' senior guard Trey Johnson said all the players were surprised and disappointed, but would back White through the judicial process.

"We took it hard because he's not just a basketball player to us - he's a friend," Johnson said. "I've talked to him and let him know that I support him. Obviously, if he's gone it will hurt the basketball team, but there's nothing we can do about that now."

White would have likely been Jackson State's starting point guard this season. He was the 2003 Mr. Basketball selection out of Provine High School.

Last season, White averaged 7.8 points, 2.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game and started 16 of Jackson State's 32 games.

"We're more concerned with where Charlie is going to be five or 10 years from now," JSU athletic director Bob Braddy said. "Basketball is not a big concern. He's a young man that has some problems that apparently need to be addressed."

If White is allowed to remain on campus, Braddy said he and Anderson have not decided on a course of action.

"I don't even want to speculate on that," Braddy said.

Even though one may have a permit to carry concealed, one cannot bear arms on a higher educational institution's grounds or it's athletic facilities (football stadiums, basketball arenas, etc). :read:

So, Mr. White is in very grave trouble for packing w/out a permit. :read:

This dude fired shots on campus, are you serious? Regardless if he was caught with one, or not intending on hurting anyone, the fact that he discharged his weapon in public on educational grounds, he is looking at the maximum sentence. I say he's getting 3 years minimum w/ time off for good behavior.

Surely this did not happen at THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY....surely not by a student, yet alone an ATHLETE. Stop playing. These type of things only happen at Southern University.

That dude is just plain idiotic. Simple and plain. He needs his butt locked up. Shoot, send him up north with Clarrett and let them both share a cell together.

He has been a big disappointment and I hate to talk about kids that way. Honestly, he shouldn't get another chance to play at JSU after this because throwing that haymaker at Southern was bad enough. He blew it.

Ya'll got your head in the sand.
Every year something like this......SHOOTING OR SOMETHING .........happens at Mumford and all ya'll can do is make excuses.

Try getting some dam security and cut this mess down to just 1 dang case a year instead of a handfull.

The season has not even got going good and Southern has had a killing and the visiting locker room robbed right under your noses.
What's going to happen at the next home game after bragging bout all that security that was being added after the first incident.
Ya'll battin' 100% on f-ed up shat happening at home SU games this year.

YOU STILL ON HERE TALKING ABOUT JSU when you should be on the phone raising he!! to the SU adms about why this shat keeps happening at YOUR SCHOOL CONSTANTLY..
Clean up ya'll own act that got out of control years ago and quit making excuses and diversions.

Guess when you have an all out riot because ya'll can't control the hood iggas that come to your games, then ya'll will do something.

Everybody ain't gonna take off running from that bullshat and one day ya'll, SU, is going to find that out when you drag a dead body out of the stands.

charlie is a great athlete who has had a problem or 2. it's a shame that something like has happened.really no one is to blame for this each indivual must be held accountable for there actions

Come on Frat..... crime is crime and you can only do so much. Unless you search every mofo that comes on campus you aint going to stop all of it. Yall are lucky because you play at Memorial and the hood folks don't roll up there like that. The folks in the stands are not doing the shooting and never have.... So unless you search every vehicle coming on the yard then..........well you know. That's not making any excuses. It is reality. Maybe we should get ole Frank Melton down to SU to clean it up.:shame:

It ain't like Memorial is set on the banks of the Resivoir either.
It's on WEST ST.................1/2 block away from the heart of "gorilla" territory.................and you know I ain't telling a lie.

MOFO's just know it ain't worth the trouble to go there cutting up.

And you know if that stadium was in the middle of JSU's campus, it would be the same security set up. Would not be 1 thing different and you know it.

As for FRANK....................I'll drive him there and drop him off for ya..............:lmao:
