JSU women extend SWAC golf streak


Jackson State, which began the day with a narrow five-stroke lead, ran away with the Southwestern Athletic Conference women's golf tournament Thursday at Harbor Oaks Golf Club in Pine Bluff, Ark.

The Lady Tigers, who claimed their seventh straight SWAC title, finished with a 327-316-643 score, 15 shots better than runner-up Texas Southern. Alcorn State (811) was fourth and Mississippi Valley State 10th (1,059).

Southern University's Annie Tu (78-78-156) won medalist honors with JSU's Tierra Manigault (80-78-158) second. Lady Tigers Akita Taylor (159, good for third place), Angel Mines (162) and Lenise Lyons (164) also took home all-conference honors.

JSU's Sam Jones was voted SWAC coach of the year.

"Our girls have been working hard, and they look like they are improving," said Jones. "That is what we are striving for.

"We knew we had to play today. The other teams have some fine players."

The JSU men, meanwhile, hold a 596-619 lead over second-place Texas Southern going into today's final round.


JSU women sign quintet:

Jackson State announced the signing of five women's basketball players on Thursday. The group includes Shelita Burns, a 6-foot-1 forward from Jim Hill; Adrienne Hudson, a 6-1 center from Fairfield High in Birmingham; Shante Stanford, a 5-8 guard from Cleveland Eastside; Erica Williams, a 5-7 point guard from Greenville-Weston; and Kiona Williams, a 5-9 guard from Greenville-Weston.
 
Jackson State head women's basketball coach Denise Taylor, announced the signing of five players for the 2002-03 season.

The Lady Tigers inked Shelita Burns, a 6'1 forward from Jim Hill High School, Adrienne Hudson a 6'2 center Fairfield High School(Birmingham, Alabama), Shante Stanford, a 5'8 guard from Cleveland Eastside High School, Erica Williams, a 5'7 point guard from Greenville Weston High School, and Kiona Williams, a 5'9 guard from Greenville Weston High School.

The four Mississippi players signed are all star blue chippers. Burns and K. Williams were selected to play i the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game this summer. Stanford and E. Williams were also honored with selections to play in the Mississippi North/South All Star game.

I did not know that we had hired a new women's golf coach. This time last year, Payton was coaching both squads.
