JSU women extend SWAC golf streak
Jackson State, which began the day with a narrow five-stroke lead, ran away with the Southwestern Athletic Conference women's golf tournament Thursday at Harbor Oaks Golf Club in Pine Bluff, Ark.
The Lady Tigers, who claimed their seventh straight SWAC title, finished with a 327-316-643 score, 15 shots better than runner-up Texas Southern. Alcorn State (811) was fourth and Mississippi Valley State 10th (1,059).
Southern University's Annie Tu (78-78-156) won medalist honors with JSU's Tierra Manigault (80-78-158) second. Lady Tigers Akita Taylor (159, good for third place), Angel Mines (162) and Lenise Lyons (164) also took home all-conference honors.
JSU's Sam Jones was voted SWAC coach of the year.
"Our girls have been working hard, and they look like they are improving," said Jones. "That is what we are striving for.
"We knew we had to play today. The other teams have some fine players."
The JSU men, meanwhile, hold a 596-619 lead over second-place Texas Southern going into today's final round.
