JSU WILL OPEN WITH DELTA STATE SEPT. 1ST

What's the big deal about playing Delta State in Cleveland, besides the stadium issues? If you look at it, they're actually better than Valley, JSU, and Alcorn. They have won a D2 National Championship and almost made it to the title game this season. For a D2 team, they definitely have some talent. They were wearing Valley out when they played the home and home series with them a few years ago. I think Valley only won one game out of the 4 they played.
Delta State could be a 1-AA team. They probably wouldn't be a good one to start off with but they definitely have talent for a 1-AA squad. And, to tell you the truth, they are the best college football team in Mississippi right now. Delta State, USM, Ole Miss, Alcorn, JSU, Valley, and Mississippi State bringing up the rear.
Yall are acting like you're going to Texas to play a D2 school. Cleveland is probably 3 hours away from Jackson. That's almost like going to Valley and you go there every other year. You'll lose the same amount as going to Valley. JSU will benefit from it, too. There's a ton of talent on those teams in the Cleveland area (Cleveland Eastside, Cleveland High, Ray Brooks, Shaw High, Broad Street, etc.) that don't normally get to see JSU. You'll definitely land some good recruits out of that trip.

Some of yall can really handicap yourselves and your program with the attitudes you have. Let's face it, none of us are the best football team in the state of Mississippi right now. The Statesmen (or the Fried Okra-whatever they want to call themselves when they play you) of Delta State are the best team in Mississippi...in ANY division (D2, 1-AA, or 1A)!

Damn, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with most of what you are saying. Especially the part about this being a possible recruitment strategy to market to the Delta which for years has developed remarkable talent but for some odd reasons (grades & lack of resources) have yet to overcome the numerous challenges.

Maybe, I'm partial to a home & home game series for Delta State since I attended Broad Street for a while and know the entire area. But realistically, the Delta needs a program like JSU to help build up some community morale, support, and bring money to the area. A game like JSU vs. Delta State would do "wonders" for that poverty-stricken area, but also do wonders to JSU's ability to actively recruit in that market.

For years, the Delta has proven to have some of the best athletes in the state, only to see a bulk of their prized players never get the grade or attend a JUCO where they fell off the map. It's an unfortunate situation that has only continued to get worse from what I see. However, having a game of this magnitude would help revitalize some of the excitement in that area and possibly create some needed motivation amongst the area schools.

I say play a home & home series. Undoubtedly, the game in Cleveland would be a sell out because there's really nothing to do in that part of the region except to go to Tunica to the casino's! :smh: There's nothing, in my opinion for us to lose and so much for us to gain. We really need to stop debating "in the box" and step outside from time to time. JSU could really make this thing work for both sides and help ignite a continual positive market strategy that could change the way the Delta is perceived by many outsiders!

Please ask yourself....Have you seen ANY Division I-A school travel to a Division I-AA. The answer is NO. It amazes me when SWAC schools and officials make decisions that fly in the face of what everyone else does, then they wonder why we are behind. Playing Delta State in Cleveland would be another one of those decisions. If we are going to play a road game there are PLENTY of Division I-AA or Division I-A schools to select.

Your argument doesn't have any substance because those same 1-A schools that you refer to "really" don't need to come to our house to play because they have a sustainable fan base that "support" them and come to every game despite their record. There would still be a sizeable difference in attendance figures--with the exception of the very low-mid level 1-A schools--with them selecting to plays us at their home location versus ours. These larger already established programs really don't need us to survive at all, but we (at times) are very attracted to accepting their conventional pay days to get slaughtered at their stadium because we are desperate for the money to help fuel our program. Money, might I add, that they generate from their OWN fan base.

I can name several Div II schools that have created home & home match-ups with schools from higher classifications being 1-AA. Please stop looking at just the proverbial difference in the level of the schools, but rather at the actual market appeal that it will bring to the area.

Right now, all we're doing is arguing within the box and not doing anything to help justify doing some actually different from the norm. With this way of thinking, we will always stay behind the 8 ball. Let's take a different approach and see what happens!

I will argee coldsweat on one thing, there is such a wealth of talent in the Delta that it's ridiculous! The problem is that the kids here do have grades worth a damn, so they end up going JUCO and never being heard from again. I told ya'll this last year, if ya'll could ever get them two kids u got last year Cordario Calvin and Brandon McCoy on the field, I promise you they will be a BIG help to JSU.

While the Delta is a rich talent pool, this is not about recruitment. It's about money. We want to tap into one of the largest fan bases in BCF....Jackson State. We want to home game with a payout to a D2. A home-home is not a financial gain because you only make money one year. If we are going to do a home-home, we should find a 1-AA school to play or a Classic. A two year game in Jackson with a payout to DSU is a financial gain for BOTH parties involved especially if we can draw AT LEAST 20,000 fans. If this game draws 30K+ it needs to be a yearly game.

Also, you can't compare JSU to Valley and probably not even Alcorn. Valley's stadium only holds 10K; Delta State holds 8K. When DSU was playing Valley, Valley was a 2-9 and 1-10 team. DSU is not playoff material every year. They are very beatable. They beat two HBCU's this year by a TD each. Beating Alcorn is not as big as beating Jackson State since we normally beat Alcorn. If DSU beats us, that will resonate throughout the state. We need to show up for this game. They are probably not going to be as talented as JSU but they WILL be well coached (fundamentally sound) and THAT will even the playing field tremendously.

I will explain my position further. If Jackson State plays Delta State in Cleveland we make NOTHING financially and we are playing a lower division team on the road and giving up homefield advantage. If we win, what have we proven here. That we can beat a lower division team that we are supposed to beat and make zero dollars on the game in the process. And wouldn't it be smarter to play non-conference games in areas that Comegy has developed as good recruiting spots for JSU. There are many Division I schools we can play on the road and give high school players a chance to see Jackson State in action. We should focus on our strong recruiting bases and play games in those states. Plus, we already play a game in the Delta every other year....Mississippi Valley. So JUST what do WE have to gain from a home and home with Delta State.

Don't know about this year, but USM had the best football team in Mississippi last year.

So, USM making it to a bowl game make them better than Delta State? The same Delta State that was one game away from playing for their second national championship. USM was 9-5 on the season and Delta State finished 12-3.

USM was the best team. Whatever you want to believe.

Contrary to what you may believe, you don't get alot of people from the Cleveland, Clarksdale area at the Valley-JSU football game in Itta Bena. Most of your crowd comes from Itta Bena, Greenwood, Indianola, Jackson, and Greenville. That area has the largest concentration of Valley supporters.
You all are only thinking about the bottom line of money. It's been said that the Cleveland, Clarksdale, Shelby, Mound Bayou, Benoit, area is ripe with talent. If JSU did go to Cleveland to play Delta State in a home and home series, you would possibly get several high school players from that area to play for JSU. Trust me when I say that there are some stud players in the Delta that few people know about simply because of where they play.
Playing in that area is going to open the JSU recruitment area even wider. And honestly, the name Jackson State University will only get you so far. You never know. You might play the game there and a kid that saw the game and liked JSU's offense might decide to sign with you and that kid could turn out to be the next Walter Payton.
That little trip to Cleveland, MS would have paid huge dividends then, wouldn't it.

I'm just trying to get yall to stop think that just because JSU is 1-AA and Delta State is D2, it doesn't mean that you should play them at their home. Since you all are complaing about cash so bad, how about you all get a percent of the gate.

*If they are complaining about money for a 3 hour trip, how in the world are they going to make it if they get their own stadium and have to pay for it's upkeep?*

Football is buisness. JSU under no circumstance, should travel to Cleveland. Jsu has every thing to lose and nothing to gain.

in Mississippi....damn near every kid who follows football already knows about Jackson....it's the city and if they can get away, they'll try...if Jackson came....it'll be highly unlikely some kid will pop up at the game and that's the next Walter Payton....kids today have access to more things than kids 30 years ago did so a JSU trip to Cleveland won't be some type of eyeopening experience because kids already know what to expect

it's about economics....what would JSU gain from a home and home? Pride?.......come on

Antroy,

Has a Division II team ever defeated a Divison I-A team?

JSU, Delta State near deal to play football this fall

Game matching I-AA, II schools would be played in Jackson

By David Brandt

Jackson State and Delta State are close to signing a deal for a football game to open the 2007 season, the first meeting in football between the schools.

The deal could be completed as early as this week, said JSU athletic director Bob Braddy and DSU athletic director Brad Teague.

The game would be played at 6 p.m on Sept. 1 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.

"I think it's a terrific opportunity for both schools," Braddy said. "We've just got to sign the necessary paperwork and it will be done. ... We all know the history of Delta State's football program and I think fans from both schools will be interested to see what happens on the field."

Jackson State competes in the NCAA Division I Championship Subdivision, previously known as Division I-AA. Delta State competes one step below, at Division II. One of the biggest differences: JSU can award 63 scholarships per season, while Delta State is limited to 36.

DSU won the Division II national title in 2000 and reached the national semifinals in 2006, with a 12-3 record.

The Statesmen will have a new coach, Ron Roberts, this fall.

Jackson State finished 6-5 last season under first-year coach Rick Comegy.

Delta State beat a I-AA school last fall, winning 17-14 at Stephen F. Austin in Texas.

USM was 9-5 on the season and Delta State finished 12-3.

USM was the best team. Whatever you want to believe.

If USM played Delta State's schedule, they would have been 15-0. Had Delta State played USM's schedule, they would have been 0-14.

Also, in terms of Delta State giving JSU some of the gate, with only 8K fans, they won't make enough money to make it worth their while or ours. They would have to give us at least half the gate and raise ticket prices to about $25. Why do all of that when all they have to do is come to Jacktown.

Please stop the jibberish w/ the I-AA to I-A stuff. That's old. It's FCS and FBS and we're all division I. So, w/ that in mind, perhaps a FBS will travel to an FCS since we're all officially division 1. :)

As for travel to a division II or NAIA? Whatever floats your boat if it's economically feasible for you.

I agree with you TP, I don't think that Delta State is close to USM at all. Don't let those records fool you, USM's competition is way stronger than Delta State, and USM football players are way better than Delta States.

We were all always D1. The new designation makes no sense so people stick with what they know.

In terms of economic feasibility. A home game is economically feasible if you have a fan base. It's not if you don't have a fan base or your stadium only holds 5000 people.

Delta State University Marching Band

I am sure they are coming....seeing them go against the BOOM is going to be something to behold.....LOL

I see that there's no sense in trying to open your eyes to bigger opportunities that you all realize.
Band fan, plenty of people know about Jackson State. They're in Mississippi so you can't help but to know about them. But actually seeing them is a different thing.

The way some of yall think, we'll be back on the 9 game mandate in a few years.

If it don't make dollars it don't make sense (cents).

It's also good to get people into Jackson for a change because it ain't no sense in recruiting them if they scared to come to Jackson. You know people in the country think crime in Jackson is bad.

This is the important part:

"We know what kind of football the SWAC produces and look forward to that challenge," Teague said. "We've got a very large alumni base in Jackson, so we're thrilled to have the game at Memorial Stadium."

The deal is only for the 2007 season, though Teague and Braddy said they would be interested in talking about a long-term commitment.

Teague is leaving Delta State on March 1 to become athletic director at Central Arkansas.

"Opening our season in Jackson is a great situation for (Delta State) and I think it's a great game for Jackson State, too," Teague said. "It's something that really has some long-term potential."

With DSU having a presence in Jackson, we can draw more fans. I am sure that the AD at DSU did not want to lock the school into a long term deal since he is leaving but he acknowledges that it would be a good long term deal...and he is right. I would like for this to be our permanent season opening game.

Antroy. I am no supporter of the 9-game mandate. Never have been. I am in favor of JSU playing Division I schools, renewing a few old series that were put on hold because of the mandate, and developing home-and-home matchups with schools that are fighting for the FCS...I-AA...championship. Schools like FAMU, Hampton, Georgia Southern, Northwestern State, McNeese State, etc...and possibly a few Conference USA or Sun Belt teams, if they are willing to pay. These schools offer bigger opportunities for us than traveling to a D2 school in our home state and playing in front of 8,000 fans.
Delta State will be a nice home opener. However, I don't expect them to be as good next year because they loss their head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive backs coach, AD, and they have to replace their star QB.
