Why was the JSU Athletic Budget decreased? Did this have anything to do with last years Football Season? $350,000 ain't chump change.

UM, MSU increase money for sports

Football revenues key to success as 6 of 7 schools expand budgets

When it comes to collegiate athletics in Mississippi, the richest continue to get richer, indeed.

According to the proposed 2005 athletic budgets approved Thursday by the state College Board, Ole Miss and Mississippi State not only will have the deepest coffers of the state's seven athletic departments, but both are projecting double-digit growth from 2004.

Ole Miss' proposed athletic budget of more than $29.2 million is not only the state's largest, it represents an increase of 10.2 percent from last year.
State projected a budget of nearly $28.9 million, a whopping 24.3 percent increase over 2004.

But a good portion of MSU's $5.6 million increase was supplied by a $3.6 million kick from the school's athletic foundation that had been categorized differently in preceding years.

By mandate from the Board, all of the athletic departments projected balanced budgets. Only one, Jackson State, expected its bottom line to dip by $350,467, a 7.1 percent decrease from 2004. .......

Everything was decreased ------STATEWIDE. JSU will have a 6.5% increase in tuition this comming year.

Had nothing to do with the great football year we had.
The others are bolstered by their "private multi-million dollar" foundations.

I'm guessing last year's dismal football season and poor crowds had everything to do with it. Could be wrong, though.

Its probably a combination of things. I think there were some one-time expenditures(weightroom, players lounge) that showed up in last year's budget. That might've made a difference in the bottom line. That's my only explanation. Remember, these figures indicate how much we intend to spend in 2005, not how much money we may have lose in 2004.

Y'all need to go ahead and admit it. Y'all lost a lot of expected revenue so your budget decreased this year, and are bracing for what is to come this year.

I admitted it, and ain't about to dance around it. Last year killed us, and we shouldn't be quick to have lofty projections for the coming year.

We don't have many big-money games this year, so I'm sure the revenue projections are lower than last year. But some of you act as if we have a multi-million dollar deficit this year. The simple fact is we're spending less money this year.

We will still make more money than you. 350,000 is only about 20K fans and given that we don't have as many home games this year, we should have a lower projection. It only makes sense.

Did you not see the reported figures that PNeck posted on the other tread? That information showed that A&M's program was more profitable than JSU's.

Furthermore, your progam must lack money because it could not afford to bring the band to Normal last year. We took our band to all the games we wanted to take them.

JSU's finances will take another big hit if Bell loses games right out of the gate at the beginning of the season. If so, JSU's financial position will be as bad as any team in the SWAC.

Must be nice to be able to use state tax $$$$$ for collegiate athletics (La,Ms).

Boy, if Tx would get on board w/ that... :shame: Man.

Those figures Pneck posted were "questionable" at best. And it'll take more than a couple of bad seasons to put our financial situation in jeopardy. The fact that we've recently upgraded our facilities significantly (and are still making upgrades) means our situation can't be that bad.

Don't waste your time JSU99. You know we will be on welfare after 1 season dropoff. :lmao:

Panthro ............ you get tha big picture.

If you believe those numbers then good for you but did you see how that our budget is still bigger than yours even with the cuts?? And I certainly don't hope that you think that you think you made more money than us at the gate. Our home attendance was like 6th in the nation and I am sure that our bball attendance was higher than AAMU's if not the highest in the SWAC. Those are the two revenue sports so you can stop with the lies.

What numbers are you using to show that your budget is bigger than ours? You just implied that you did not believe those numbers reported by PNeck. So, I take it, you didn't believe the revenue amd profit figures, but you believe the budget figures? You believe the number that supports your claim, but disbelieve the numbers from the same source that supports my claim. Clearly, you did't get to be the Logical One using that type of reasoning.

P.S. A budget contained funds from sources other than attendance at the gate.

Bright side?.....Man, we didn't even know this was a dark side.

The only people worried about it is people that don't have no connection to JSU ..... LIKE YOU.

Like I said to JSU99, why waste time. :licky:

I was just using you all's argument against you so I could win that was all. Looking at the budget's on that stupid report shows that JSU has a higher budget. So you can stand on those numbers or let it go. Thanks.

Also, until you tell where those sources of income came from, I will have my own beliefs. Also, you all are trying to say that attendance is what made the BOOM not come but the NCAA report shows that we had a higher home attendance than you so that still supports the fact that we have a higher budget. Also, we played in more high profile classics than you. We were in the Southern Heritage, Circle City, and Capitol city....all of which give us at LEAST $200K payout per game....unlike the peanuts you are running to St. Louis for.

How the state's biggest football programs are faring at the bottom line:

In The Black
Ole Miss
Southern Miss
Jackon State
Mississippi State

In The Red
Alcorn State
Delta State
Mississippi Valley State

Only Jackson State ($160,000) expects to turn a profit this year from football, while for the other three schools which field football teams, it's a losing proposition.

"Football's very important ? it's our major revenue source," said JSU athletic director Roy Culberson.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Just a little FYI for those of you who can't sleep at night worrying about our program. We gon' be aiight.

Are we really this far behind? According to the article OLE Miss will make $17 million on Football next season while JSU will make $160,000 and ALcorn and Valley will lose money? This is hard to digest.

Ole Miss' football program expects nearly $17 million with $6.2 million in expenses, and Mississippi State will make $13 million and will spend $5.8 million.

Both schools expect strong profits from football ticket sales (nearly $8 million for Ole Miss and $4.7 million for MSU), and more than $3 million each from SEC television deals is budgeted.

But for Conference USA member Southern Miss, that kind of revenue isn't there.

USM expects just $1.3 million from gate receipts, and a meager $715,000 from the league's television package.

The state's smaller schools face an even tougher road.

Only Jackson State ($160,000) expects to turn a profit this year from football, while for the other three schools which field football teams, it's a losing proposition.

Yes, we are that far behind. That is why I laugh when people on here brag about getting a new dorm or a new math building. LOL PWC's, even the ones we call middle teir, are 20 years ahead of HBCU's. And at the rate we are going, we will never catch up. Look at what USM's AD said...they raise an extra 1.5 M a year and that still is not enough. At JSU we probably make not more than that. Also, the $160K is probably how much we figure to be in the black. If we average 15K per home contest (NWState, Valley, Homecoming) we could make 250K before expenses and with three classics (Hampton, TNState, Alcorn, we should should clear about 500K. I am not sure how much we get in sponsorships and from MBC but I am sure that it is ain't even close to what the SEC gets. We need to have a good season though to maximize our profits because if we are not winning...we may not get a large HC crowd and we need that to take us over the top this year.
