James Woody admits he's paused a few times on the way to his office, watching as Jackson State transfer quarterback Tray Rutland messed around with his new receivers, spraying bullets all over the practice field with his left arm.

It's the kind of arm that leaves Woody, JSU's offensive coordinator, awake at night diagramming post patterns, deep outs and even the occasional Hail Mary in his head.

"He's got the arm strength that can stretch a field in every direction," Woody said grinning. "He brings a whole new dimension to what you can do with the offense. It's exciting. There's no doubt about that."

I was impressed with Rutland when he was at Mississippi State. He played in a couple of games when the starter went down. He has a strong arm and had more natural talent than the starter. Rutland didn't fit into that West Coast offense State runs. He throws it better than Oliver, but Oliver is a little more seasoned and is a great runner.

Q&A: Rick Comegy, Jackson State football coach

It's the second year of the Rick Comegy era for the Jackson State football program and expectations are once again in the stratosphere. In his first season, Comegy led the Tigers to a 6-5 record, a four-win improvement over 2005. Now the Tigers are trying for their first appearance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference title game since 1999.

Thank you GR. Just because Brandt puts your name in the paper doesnt mean you are just gonna get handed the job at JSU. If the youn man stays down and works on his craft he will get a chance to showcase what he can do.

Man Jimmy Oliver is tough enough. After the game here in Pine Bluff,man there were UAPB fans trying to get Jimmy Oliver's autograph.Dude is tough. Now JSU got a qb with SEC experience, and a 6'8" Freshman offensive lineman that has a black belt in Karate.

Man I hope Rick Comegy get an offer to a pro team or something next season. lol
