Ex-Harrison Central HS QB may get chance to take field in first JSU season

LYMAN - Quarterback Jeremy Lee will have an opportunity to win the backup job at Jackson State next month.

The former Harrison Central standout will battle Brian Green and Elijah McDonald for the right to back up Robert Kent. John Flen was the Tigers' No. 2 quarterback, but he quit the team last week.

Lee is excited about getting a chance to contribute as a true freshman for Jackson State, one of the favorites to win the SWAC Championship.

"I'm blessed to have this opportunity," Lee said. "Things are working out for me. I feel good about my chances of being No. 2."

If Kent goes down with an injury, Jackson State offensive coordinator Darrell Asberry has confidence in Lee to lead the Tigers, who went 7-4 last season.

"I think Jeremy can come in and help us right away," Asberry said.

At 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, Lee already has the size of a major college quarterback. During his high school years, he had a good workout regimen.

"I tried to prepare myself for college football by lifting weights and staying in shape," Lee said. "You can't go into college half-stepping. You have to be ready."

Former Red Rebel wide receiver Jor'Dan Beard, who will play at Jackson State, has faith in Lee. The All-South Mississippi pass-and-catch combination will be roommates.

"I know that he will come in and work hard to learn the playbook," Beard said. "He has a strong arm and (he's) very hard to bring down."

Lee was one of the state's top quarterbacks last season, after completing 141 of 256 passes for 2,265 yards and 17 touchdowns. His best game was a spectacular 410-yard performance against top-ranked Brandon in the Class 5A state playoffs.

That performance drew the attention from SWAC schools like Jackson State, Alcorn State, Grambling and Southern. He eventually chose Jackson State.

"Jeremy is the type of quarterback we like at Jackson State," Asberry said. "He's tall and athletic and plays with determination. He fits the mold of our program."

Lee and Beard will both represent the South squad in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic on Friday at Madison Central High School.

Flen did the right thing...he knew this kid was the heir apparent to The Great One.

And how about his WR coming to school with him? How smart can you be? Unlike Kents WR from high school that, whom he made all state. That kid went to a school that cant throw the ball in the ocean and he hasnt been heard from since. You would think he would have transferred by now.

Oh well....the 3rd bst QB in the SWAC will hit jacktown this Friday...Ill let you know how he does.

And remember the name Jor'dan Beard. I have a feeling we will be discussing that name in the same breath as Chris Jones and TC Taylor in the near future.

Randle has attempted to transfer to JSU, but Sherril won't release. C'mon now GR, even though he was STUPID coming out of HS, you know he couldn't possibly still be that STUPID. Too late now though.... (STUPID) lol

Beard is a smaller slot receiver.... a Torey Thigpen type, but much quicker.... cat quick

WR, 5-9, 175, Harrison Central ? All-district pick. Played in pro-style passing offense. Caught 51 passes for 758 yards and 4 TDs. "He's very quick," Harrison coach Donny Bentz said. "He didn't miss many (passes) this season."

QB, 6-3, 221, Harrison Central High ? All-district pick. Completed 141 of 256 passes for 2,265 yards (2nd in 5A) and 17 TDs. Threw for 403 yards and four TDs against top-ranked Brandon in 5A playoff game. "He's a big kid with a very strong arm," Harrison coach Donny Bentz said.

Vincent Dancy

DB, 6-1, 200, Noxubee County High ? Terrific all-around athlete. Played S, CB and WR and returned kicks. Member of The Clarion-Ledger Top 40. Drew interest from MSU, Ole Miss and Memphis. Had 78 tackles, 6 INTs, 5 TD catches and 2 kickoff returns for TDs. "He's going to be a big asset for JSU," Noxubee coach M.C. Miller said.

He's the real deal!
