Jackson State University and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory officially signed a partnership Monday to enhance education and research opportunities at the university.

JSU is one of two academic institutions to join the research laboratory in this type of agreement. The other is Florida A&M University.

"We're signing this partnership with JSU in expectation of an excellent source of science and engineering expertise, students, faculty and research in the coming years," said Robert Whalin, director of the research laboratory, who signed the agreement with JSU President Ronald Mason Jr.

Miriam Ighoavodha, a recent graduate of JSU's graduate program in environmental science, said the program will increase opportunities for students.

"This will broaden the field ? it's not going to be just limited to a few, but many of them," Ighoavodha said. "That's a big plus in the program."

Whalin said the partnership will provide opportunities for research experience, cooperatives, internships and research grants in science, mathematics, engineering and technical fields.

"The program is a very good opportunity for minorities," Ighoavodha said. "This will really enhance their ability to advance in the research world and become more competitive."

Huey Hwang, professor of biology, will see firsthand the impact the agreement will have on research at JSU. Hwang and fellow biology and chemistry professors have been awarded $750,000 for their research.

"We have several ongoing research programs on campus ... however the funding level was low," Hwang said.

The grant will allow researchers to purchase additional equipment and hire technicians to assist.
