HUNTSVILLE – Aqeel Glass emerged from a three-way competition as Alabama A&M’s starting quarterback, coach James Spady announced Friday.

“Aqeel (Glass), Damion (May) and Dylan (Smith) are all skilled enough quarterbacks to start and lead us successfully,” Spadysaid. “But we (the coaches) believe because he has the fundamentals and demeanor of a successful quarterback, Aqeelgives us the best chance to win.”

The announcement comes as the Bulldogs prepare for Saturday’s scrimmage, their second of the fall camp. They open the season Sept. 2 in Legion Field against UAB.

Glass, a 6-4, 225-pound freshman from St. Louis, passed for 2,811 yards in his senior year. He threw 32 touchdown passes with 14 interceptions while completing 157 out of 280 passes for Lutheran North High School.

Throughout the spring and fall camps, Glass; May, a redshirt junior; and Smith, a redshirt freshman, competed for the starting role with Spady saying it was a tight contest.

“We have confidence in all three of them,” Spady said Friday. “And all three will play this season and we have no reservations about playing any of them.

“But our team has rallied around Aqeel and we are all excited about what he brings to our team as its leader at the quarterback position.”

Fixed it for you...

Its happened under Spady once too. He got itchy with Ballard in '15 after one bad game. Prior to that one, he lit up PV & PB for 300+ yards passing and a TD. Ballard never recovered that season, and didn't have a big passing game like that in 2016 either.

That defense Ballard had a big game against in 2015 struggled early on big time to begin the year as Grambling did the same a week later in a huge way. That was more of a fluke.

Glass is our man!!! AAMU fans are glad the true freshman got the nod, he will have growing pains in the first 3 games, but they should prepare him for SWAC play. We are excited about our future and 4 years for Glass as starter.

May is indecisive and run happy. Glass has a more fluid release and a bigger arm. As mentioned earlier the question is will Spady stick with him during the growing pains.

May has big play abilities. I do like what i saw from Glass in high school. We shall see how it turns out. It's always weird to some of us not to see AAMU in the mix for a SWAC title. Hope things work out.
