Bell's blue-sky approach could turn cloudy in '04

Even after losing the most games in a season in Jackson State history, 10, in his first year as coach, James Bell showed a confident side Friday at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Media Day Friday in Birmingham. SWAC coaches weren't that favorable, picking the Tigers four in the East.

BIRMINGHAM ? In 2003, year one of Jackson State's James Bell era, the Tigers succeeded in only one respect: Expectations for 2004 are lowered considerably.

In fact, a reasonable observer might look at Bell's abysmal first season, the worst in JSU history, and ask: Is this the James Bell era or the James Bell error?

The answer will come this season, because Jackson State fans, as proud and as demanding as you will find, won't let what happened last year continue.

Bell, speaking here at SWAC Football Media Day, retains a positive, blue-sky outlook.

In fact, he counts those demanding ? and disappointed ? fans as a big plus.

"I'd always rather be at a place where there's a passion for football, and Jackson State fans are definitely passionate," he said smiling.

I guarantee you, this is Bell's last year. You don't go from being the WORST COACH IN JSU HISTORY to mediocre in one year. In fact, Bell's so bad, I would be surprised if JSU goes .500. Finally, if JSU starts 0-2 this year, expect things to fall apart quickly. JSU may have a new coach by Halloween.

Culbertson needs to go also. That Univ. of North Texas connection is killing JSU's football program!

UHHHHH............... try 0-1.
People are still :kaioken: from that losin' streak last year. :)

Forget the other games right now. The most IMPORTANT GAME on Bell's schedule is HAMPTON.

My Usrname "MOTTO" has not changed since October of last year. :ebrow:

Bell really has his work cut out for him. He?s trying to rebuild, regain confidence, and learn on the job all at the same time. I know the SWAC posters really don?t respect the quality of football played in the MEAC outside of FAMU, but Hampton is going to be a top ten team this year. Road games at Alcorn, GSU, Southern, and ASU make winning the conference damn near impossible. It?s got so bad, Pine Bluff schedule JSU for homecoming. He faces a rebuilding defensives secondary in TSU, but too bad for Bell because JSU is no longer a treat in the Air. Tigers it?s going to be another long season. Get out those coaching application early.

:emlaugh: Thanks for the help. My brother played basketball under the whole Culbertson regime at North Texas. I feel your pain, trust me. And my father will gladly sign any petition that J-state has to get them out of there. ... My father is a die hard Grambling fan! :emlaugh:

I am not smacking at all, but it is good when Grambling, J-state, and Southern are winning. It makes the season alot more interesting.

Back to Back losses to Gram and Southern will be Bell's one way ticket out of town. After being picked to finish 4th, Bell is quoted as saying "Doesn't bother me," Bell said. That is a "L" of a statement to make when you are coming off a 2 and 10 season.

There was nothing to rebuild. There was a team in place that obviously needed a little tweaking on primarily on defense. Not only did he not make the defense better, his cancer spread to the entire team. And look what it got him. I should say us, because we are the ones that have been suffering and will continue to suffer. If it keeps up, recruiting will begin to be non-existent and here comes Prairie view.

I am just damn disgusted.

If you read Bell's entire statement, you'll see that he said " Doesn't bother me, its not where you start but where you finish"(not the exact quote but something to that effect). I have no problem with that because its the truth.

As for Bell himself, he basically has about half of this season to prove himself. If he doesnt, we'll move on, simple as that. Contrary to popular opinion, our program won't be destroyed after 2 years.

No offense, but you obviously don't know whats going on. Hughes left that team in worse shape than the record indicated. We needed more than a tweak, we needed an overhaul. Hughes took over a complete team. When he left, it was basically Kent and a few recievers. Not to mention Hughes (along with DA) hanging around trying to poison the kids didn't help any either. Bell made a lot of mistakes, but he had a lot of help in last years disaster. But that was last year. Anyone who observed spring practice saw a lot of improvement. Whether we improve enough to save Bell's job is the question.

I knew a response like this was coming. If you really want to take Dumb Bell at his words. I asked you this question.

In 2003 Where did JSU start and where did they finish? I will answer the last part of the question. JSU ENDED (there is that word again by Bell) on a 7 game losing streak.

Once agian Bell comments were, its not where you start but where you finish. In 2003 JSU finished 2 and 10. No pun intended.

And your point is! When is it politically incorrect to say "I don't care what the coaches say about the team or where they predict us to fall!"

I'd have said the same thing if I were the coach too! I tell ya...some of yall just try try your best to make the issue bigger than what it actually is and put more lies into lies that have already been generated! :smh:

Ok..........but we're talking about 2004. Now if you want to talk about 2003, feel free to jump in on any of the 1000 discussions about how bad we were last year. But Bell's comments were in relation to this year. So all that you just typed is moot.

But to answer one of your questions, we started last year the same place we start this year: 0-0, in a 5-way tie for first place. Last I looked, that's where every team in the SWAC starts.

Dude if you see it that way that is your opinion. If you read what I posted, I am saying how in the "L" can JSU's coach blow off being picked 4th. I am sorry but Bell gave a terrible response to that question.

So what did you expect him to say? Its just a pre-season poll based on opinions, doesn't mean anything. I've always wondered about coaches that rant and rave about where they're picked in a meaningless pre-season poll. Makes them look stupid.

Bottom __________ is:

last season behind us, we all, and I do mean all of us JSU Alumn hope and pray that 2004 will be a complete turn around from 2003. If they begin the season on another losing streak, the campaign should read "ABB" "Any Body but bell".

No ................ This is the "I don't care about JSU CREW" blowing things out of sight. :fart:

Even though I personally don't like Bell as the JSU coach, the "I don't care " part was "just part" of an entire statement. I SAW THE INTERVIEW, AND HIS THOUGHTS ABOUT IT AFTERWARDS ON THE LOCAL NEWSCASTS. ..............not 3 words from newsprint. :smh:

Ya"ll will find anything to "not smack" about on this board. :goof:

Let me find some threads I can "not smack" on over nothing. ;)

LOL man you can't be serious. Polls meaningless huh? If JSU were picked to win their division I am pretty sure your opinion would change about polls.

You are right, Polls are opinions, given by your conference peers in this case. But you feel JSU is better than 4th. Maybe JSU will finish better 4th but that remains to be seen. A lot of Bell's quotes that are coming from the media makes you question his ability to lead. I know you see that.

You never answered the question, bruh? What should he have said? And if you understand the media and the spin they took on the whole J-State issue, you would understand why Bell says a lot of the stuff he says to them! But I guess being on the outside, you only see what your eyes can let you see!

To answer your first question, my opinion wouldn't change even if the polls had us #1. We've been picked first in almost eevery poll since we split into 2 divisions. And it hasn't meant a thing.

As for you're second point about Bell's quotes and his ability to lead, i have to agree(even though that's not the point u were making earlier.) Bell has a lot of good qualities as a coach(diciplinarian, good recruiter, attention to detail), but the jury is still out on his ability to motivate his players. If he doesn't improve on that aspect, all of his work will be for naught.
