Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South (2024-2025)

The Sonic Boom was a trailblazer in many ways for the SWAC bands. It is time for them to reclaim their crown! Dr. Little is bringing back precision to the drills, if we can only get the J-cettes to get back to the precision that Narah Dean Otis and Betty demanded or you would not get on the field! 4 girls was fine with her! Lol! Love The Boom!!!!
The Settes are there! The variety and difficulty of the routines they put on the field are unmatched by any other dance team. We have no idea the conditioning these young ladies must have. Hats off!!!

The JSettes do too many gymnastic moves and they often miss beat. The precision isn’t there. Traditionally they danced and didn’t get on the ground so much, there was a variety.

Everybody has their perspective. Not to get a perfect 10 does not mean there is a problem with precision. Dance has evolved and what it means to be The Prancing J-Settes has evolved as well. No way anyone can say that the performance level of these ladies in the stands, on the field, and marching/prancing has not grown beyond levels of past years. Don’t take my word for it as a Boom alum. Just ask a cross section of alumni JSettes. They are the sharpest, most well informed critics.

Just because you are a band alumnus does give you a certain perspective however, it does not make you an authority on anything. Criticism and critiques can come from anyone, not just band alumni. Although it hurts me to my heart to say this but, other HBCU dance teams are outperforming the J-Settes, both on the field and in the stands. 2024 please prove me wrong! If Loving the Boom and J-Settes is wrong, I don’t want to be right!

LOL! No squads outperformed the Settes in 2023. Not NCA&T, not the Dolls, nobody

JSU’s Sonic Boom of the South receives proclamation and resolution

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Jackson city leaders recognized the Sonic Boom of the South in a major way.

During a press conference on Monday, The Boom received a proclamation and resolution from city leaders and Jackson Mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

This comes after JSU announced that the Sonic Boom of the South would perform in the Rose Bowl parade on January 1, 2025.

Leaders with Jackson State say this is a huge honor not only for the Sonic Boom but for all HBCUs.

”It is the summa cum laude of bands. We are so excited,” Dr. Lisa Beckley-Roberts, the chair of the Department of Music at JSU said. “It is such a distinct honor to be able to perform in the Parade of Roses, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to represent JSU, the city of Jackson, the state of Mississippi, the South, and HBCUS all over the country.”

“We are definitely encouraging all of our alumni and fans and friends to give on [July 19] as we give our students their roses,” Dr. Roderick Little, the band director said. “Let’s make sure that we recognize all of the hard work that they’re doing in getting them to Pasadena, California to represent on January 1, 2025.”

You can donate to the band here.
