Jackson State opens building named for Payton

The building houses three basketball courts, three racquetball courts, three aerobics studios, a squash court, plus dozens of exercise bikes and weight benches. School officials said Jackson State is the first historically black college or university to open such a center.

Texas Southern has had one for the past three years or so...

We've had our Recreation Center like band fan said for over three years now.

Grambling has a fitness center for athletes. We have one of those as well.
Actually, we have both. I was refering to the other center we have on campus with basketball courts, weight room, raquet ball courts, etc similar to the description of the Payton Center.

Well I guess I will be one of the few on here to say, nice facility JSU. Congratulations on your new center, I'm sure W. Payton would be extremely proud! Regardless of who else has similar centers, it looks great!

Ours opened back in like 91 or 92.

Good to see more schools opening intramural centers.

I think the difference can be found in the $25 million that is being spent on this entire project. hopefully w/ a major upgrade in facilities like this more and more people at jsu will begin to see that they don't have to be IAA and will quietly go about the business of preparing to move up. I wouldn't even acknowledge it's a possibility but would get all of their ducks in a row and when everything is in place, every review of program compliance, funding for additional scholarships, addition of necessary varsity sports is completed, then announce. it'll be too late for the nay sayers to get any traction and you'll be in conferece USA b/f they can tell you why you can't do it.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Payton Center for the AKA National Founders' Day. It is a beautiful facility. Congrats to JSU!
