First 4 games will test Tigers

With Jackson State on the verge of beginning preseason football camp, the season schedule is starting to garner more attention. And there isn't a whole lot of wiggle room.

JSU has gotten off to slow starts the last two seasons, starting 1-4 in 2008 and 0-2 in 2007. The 2009 schedule presents a tougher start than either of those years.

The season kicks off at SEC member Mississippi State, followed by Tennessee State, which has six consecutive wins over JSU, in the Southern Heritage Classic, then a home game with SWAC and black college national champion Grambling before archrival Southern comes to Jackson.

If JSU isn't ready to go from the outset, an 0-4 start wouldn't be farfetched. Only Southern is a conference game, so JSU wouldn't be hurt too badly in the SWAC standings.

"That's a tough start, but I think our team is up for the challenge," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. "You would like, like most teams do, to bring in somebody to beat up on. But the schedule is the way (it is).

"We're not looking at it any different. We just have to get out there and play football right from the start. Gotta come out out shooting."

That sure looks like an 0-4 start to me. Mississippi State will probably be jsu's best chance for a win in the first four games.........

 :emlaugh:

There's not a whole lot Jackson State fans would like to see change about their football team from the last two seasons. JSU won the 2007 SWAC championship, returned to the 2008 title game, but fell 41-9 to Grambling State.

Coach Rick Comegy didn't hesitate, though, when asked on the eve of players reporting what he would like to see different.

"I would like to see the football team play without somebody making a mistake here, somebody making a mistake there," said the fourth-year coach. "My hope is we (practice) enough that we don't make those type of mistakes. That we stay cool and stay steady.

"And when it counts, score. And when it counts, stop. ... Through their discipline, have the confidence ... we were driving ourselves backwards instead of going forward."

JSU compiled the most penalty yards in the SWAC in 2008 with 1,224 in 12 games and had the second-worst average with102 yards per game. The squad seemed to have a propensity for holding penalties and personal fouls in the worst situations.

This makes a huge difference...I was part of a discussion about this on another board relative to Grambling. Last year was the first time this decade that we had fewer than 100 penalties and the first time we had fewer total penalties than our opponents total.

MORE JSU Training Camp news.

No worries as Comegy agent files suit in Alabama........
Jackson State will hold its first football practice of the season today and coach Rick Comegy is expected to be there - even though an arbitration hearing is scheduled for today in Alabama to hear a civil lawsuit filed against the coach

84 of 89 Tigers report on time.
Eighty-four of Jackson State's expected 89 players reported for duty Tuesday to kick off the 2009 football preseason. The five absences were no reason to panic as coaches had excused the players and knew they wouldn't be arriving on time

Comegy seeking toughness.
Optimism hung thicker than imagined smoke in the hallways of Stewart Hall on Tuesday. Two false fire alarms and the subsequent evacuations couldn't even dampen spirits.

Eighty-four Jackson State football players reported to preseason camp in the morning of what is routinely one of the most positive days of the year. There are no losses to cause stress. Two-a-day practices have yet to begin. Dreams of championships are still alive.

Bout time somebody posted these articles. Those SU and GSU Notes were a snorefest......this one has 5 pages written all over it.

I thought we only had 35 players??? I was scared we might not be able to field a team. Only 5 excused tardies??? Don't let Mighty Dog see this.

I thought the lawsuit was from some Buffet place or something...

Just some Bamma that's pi$$ed because Cool Al's and Stamp's are getting all of Comegy's business now.

It's August.
It would not be football season if some Bamma was not trying to hornswaggle JSU.

not in the least,......... :scared:

I do wish the young man well.

I'm taking the high road

btw, there was an article in the sports section that you would be interested in. Can't find it online though, but I'm still searching.
:D

You just mad that he jumped over BAMA to the 'Sip to play some real football and win some championships. That kid is going to AT LEAST 4 SWAC Championship games and is gonna win AT LEAST two SWAC Championships.

not in the least.

and PLEASE, just leave it at that, cause I intend to stay on the high road.

preciate it

MH, I am sure that you all got a lot of Comegy rejects so be happy about that. You know Comegy owns everything from Georgia to Mississippi and is the ONLY SWAC coach with connections in PA and OH.

I stopped reading right there. don't know bout Sip, or Pa or Oh. I do know Georgia though. That one was Barlow. By a mile. Seriously.

and jayrob,
believe it. I am gon stay on the high road.

MH, just so you know... Barlow is NOT a recruiter. sheesh!

UH TP.......You do realize Pete has had many kids come from Ohio. He has a few on the team right now and he is from Youngstown Ohio and went to Dayton.........and you also got to know that Pete coached Johnnie Cole in HS in Dayton. So I assume JC has plenty of connections to Ohio since the Cole brothers are from there. LOL.

Come on man......you are slipping.
