Jackson State alums to lead Alabama college, university

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Two Jackson State University graduates have been tapped to lead two Alabama institutions of higher learning.
Reginald Sykes will assume the post of president of Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville on July 19. Sykes earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Jackson State University. He holds a doctorate from Mississippi State University.

Sykes has experience as a college vice president, a dean of student services, an adjunct and full-time instructor and, most recently, as assistant commissioner for community and junior college relations with the Mississippi Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.

"We had 62 applicants for this position, and I wanted to be sure that the person chosen was a good fit for the college, the community and the Alabama Community College System," said Alabama State Board of Education member Ella Bell.

Charlotte P. Morris will start work as interim president of Tuskegee University on Aug. 1. A native of Kosciusko, Miss., Morris completed her undergraduate work at Jackson State University. She earned her master's degree from Delta State University and her Ph.D. from Kansas State University. Morris has done further study at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Pine Manor College in Boston. Morris has served in a number of roles at Tuskegee University for the past 25 years, including executive associate to the president and secretary to the Board of Trustees, director of the Tuskegee University Title III Program and chair of convocations and special events. Morris has also been named associate dean and professor of management in the College of Business and Information Science. She will assume those duties when she steps down from the position of interim president.

"I am delighted to be asked to play a more significant role in the legacy of this historic institution," Morris said in a statement. "I will inherit a great team, and I am confident that we will keep the institution intact for the new president."
