Jackson St vs Alabama St Game Updates:

Well, this one is history. We had no answer for Jackson and especially Williams. The higher ups may not like losing by this much in Bell's 3rd year. I think a loss to AlaState was expected (and they may repeat as SWAC Champs) but not this bad of a loss.

I think you all fought a good and hard fight.......they just have more talent than you all. You were correct about the poor tackling though. You just can't arm tackle Randle and Williams.

Yeah, they are more talented however they are not 3 TD's more talented., 23 points should be enough to keep you in the game. Leading the conference in turnovers is good but that luck ran out tonight. We need to be stronger at the point of contact. It appears that we would get Williams in backfield SEVERAL times but he would break the tackle. We have clearly improved on offense with the new OC but we still have a long way to go as a team.

I think your offense can be better with a more versatile QB.

Ummm I just got in from watching the game on ESPNU and Bama State is 3 TD's better than JSU. At least 3. Every TD scored by JSU was a gift. Every last one was the result of someone on our defense being out of position - not that they were "blocked" or "faked" out of position - we simply over ran the play, missed an assignment, or had bad angles.

I am not saying this as "smack" or anything but it's just the truth. Our offense then just wore the JSU front line down. On the 98 yard drive in the second qtr - when we ran the ball there were JSU players in the back field - they didnt make the the play but they were fresh and getting off blocks. In the third qtr they were a no show and it was all DB's making tackles.

I was surprised at how Bell tried to open up the offense, he did have a couple of wrinkles in but Haren bless his heart, he is just not a QB.

TP,
Were you watching the game or just listening to the broadcast?

no smack, but ASU is indeed way more than 3 TDs more talented than JSU.

Don't be fooled by the difference in the final score.
1) JSU could not stop ASU at all. The last I heard the broadcaster say ASU was at 600 yards. We had at least 3 drives of 80+ yards.
2)The TDs JSu scored were largely on blown coverages by ASU
3)Your defense was completely overmatched. completely
4)You didnt lose because of Haren.

Just getting back from Jackson and I spoke with a few JSU fans. One lady said that she was glad ASU won, because now they can get rid of Bell. Another person said that some people are for Bell and some are not. He said that Bell has brought discipline to the team, made players go to class and to church. All isn't bad in Bell, but JSU has been struggling since his arrival. The sad thing about Bell's replacement is the fact that JSU might get someone worst than Bell and it will take them another two or three years to get the team together.

The fact is that our defensive line is very weak. It been like that all season. Bell did not do a good job of trying to address the problem during the offseason with recruiting. Hampton really exposed the weakness in the first game in the first and second quarter. However, their coach change the quarterback in the third quarter to pass the ball and it did not work. But he came back to his senses in the fourth quarter and went back to the running game. Our interior line is weak and other coaches in the league are of aware of it. Our coaches inserted our best offensive lineman (injured Albert Stinson) in as a defensive lineman in attempt to stop Alabama State. I know that our head coach do not have a clue about offensive strategy, but I thought he knew something about defense (former defensive coordinator at Wake Forest and Indiana). Also, there were only around 10,700 fans at the game last night (some were high school and junior college students because of high school/junior college day and they get in free). Personally, if I was the president, the head football coach and the AD would be fired today which is October 9, 2005. I thought that when we replaced our former coach that were trying to take the program to the next level instead of going backward. We should have hired an experienced proven winning coach to lead our tradition rich program.

HORNETSWARM

There is no one worst than Bell!!!!!!!

Likewise, looks like Bama State is headed toward another SWAC Championship!!!!!

john mckenzie I'm sure, is ready and pack his bags to return to Jackson. He was the offensive coordinator for the bama state team that won the 1st heritage bowl. helped donald carrie turn into a beast for alcorn. You want offense. He's your man. He's a JSU man to boot.

As for Keldrick Williams, there is a difference in having him surrounded in the backfield and having him down. Everyone in the swac has that problem with him. Think, If he was still at tennessee (who could have used him yesterday), he would be a part time starter splitting time with gerald riggs. As well, Jackson would be the starter at arkansas. Welcome to the sec boys, or at least the swac version.

JSU folks,

You guys actually looked better than I expected. Especially the passing game. I enjoyed the game, and the jawing back-and-forth with your fans, although I was a little dissappointed when your fans actually cheered TJ's injury. :smh: Fortunately, he was OK, and went on to have a great game.

The defense did until they got tired. Them 3 and out's killed those guy's. You could tell at the end of the 3rd and 4th they were used up.

Ya'll put a foot in us.

McKenzie will NEVER be the HC at JSU. Bell is not a bad coach. Hughes is what you call a bad coach. You guys REALLY don't know what Bell has had to do with this team and I am not talking about grades, etc. He has the program going in the right direction. I personally believe that he needs to finish this season on a good note, get an extension, and then he will really be able to recruit the type of players we need for his system. You can't run that defense without good d-linemen. Our LB corp is very young. All we have is a secondary.

Deuce and MH,
I have not seen the game but the things you mention are part of the game. We have scored several times with people being out of position as have you. No one told you to blitz 9 men leaving the middle open for that 47 yard TD. Bell's team is based on speed and if they get ahead of you....it's off to endzone. You were not 3 TD's better than us.

It may as well be a part of the game - but what we are trying to tell you - and you didnt see the game - Bama State pounded JSU for every score we got, scoring on 7 straight possessions, 1 punt in the entire game - o yea 39 mins in time of possession. We earnded our scores and at no time were we even in danger of not scoring. The difference is while we did what we wanted to do - it took defensive mistakes on our part in order for you to score. It had nothing to do with JSU game plan or their coaching, every score someone on our defense was out of position.

Come to think of it, we were not 3 TD's better than JSU- we were 6 TD's better than JSU - but instead of cashing in for TD's on 3 drives, we settled for 3 field goals.

What will take to prove to you Bell is a bad head football coach? More 2-10 or 4-7 seasons? More fans cheering against the team because they want him gone? The very fact that he has a starting QB with a high school arm should be proof enough the guy has no clue. And how can you recruit when you finish 4-7 or 5-6 every year and THAT'S A GOOD YEAR FOR BELL. No one wants to go to a losing program that has declining fan support.
I love JSU, but I have had enough of Bell. I didn't expect them to beat Alabama State but I expect improvement. ASU is much better than JSU. Heck we were closer to beating them under Hughes and you are right he too was a bad coach. JSU is 2-3 with two wins over Texas Southern and Valley (who we always beat) that doesn't impress me. When Hughes was coach he had an undiscipline team on and off the field and there needed to be changes made. Bell has the team more discipline but failed to develop an offensive and defensive plan that will beat anyone that's good. If JSU gives Bell an extension it would be a HUGE mistake. Fan support would drop like you have never seen and good recruits would stay away because JSU would have nothing to offer them but more losing and empty seats.

Bell already had three recruiting classes. Why would any top skill players (QB and WR) want to play in that type of offense. I thought Bell recruited some juco defensive linemen and defensive ends that could contribute right away. Why waste your time on juco players that can't play. We need to get back recruiting good kids out of high school. We don't have a pass rush nor can we stop the run. Bell has been the Defensive Coordinator for the pass two years. He do not deserve an extension to his contract.

I agree with this post. Bell was hired to turn around this program and return JSU to the SCG. To remain the head coach at this school, I think he should win out and hope that ASU loses to Gram. A lot will be determine next week when he faces a Southern team that is not as talented as last years team that destroyed JSU in the dome.

You guys expect too much out of Bell. Those JUCO's help because Hughes left no talent. They help with depth and it's showing. Again, our major problem is tackling....a basic fundamental that is obviously not getting through to the kids. Haren may have a noodle arm but he does not turn the ball over and that is just as good as having 500 yards of offense with 3 ints. Everything balances out. Bell has had three recriting which means that aside from the JUCO's, most of his recruits are RS-sophomores. We are actually a young team. We probably return about 17 starters for next year. Bell needs to add more quality depth along the defense, let the white man handle the offense and we will be alright. And you all can't complain about Haren next year.
