Alabama's best football players have met Mississippi's best in a postseason all-star game for the last 26 years, but a vote this week by the AHSAA Central Board could set the stage for the series to end.

The Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association – the coaches' group that officially sponsors the game – has been authorized to "explore options" regarding the annual football and basketball games. The Central Board approved the authorization at a meeting earlier this week.

AHSADCA Director Alvin Briggs said today that Alabama officials haven't talked to officials from any other states, adding that the Central Board authorization is part of a routine evaluation of the all-star football event.

"We're fortunate that we're able to play a football and basketball all-star games, and we want to continue to do that," Briggs said in a phone interview. "There might not be anybody out there who wants to do both. We want to explore those options."

Efforts to reach Mississippi Association of Coaches Executive Director Johnny Mims – Briggs' counterpart – via phone and e-mail failed today. It's unclear if Mississippi is also exploring the possibility of playing another state.
