Interim GSU coach's coursework confirmed

The reason the story "got out" was because the intial faxes that implicated coach Spears were not just sent to the GSU pres. They were also sent to the ULS system, the Monroe News Star, The Shreveport Times, etc. They had done theor research and required a response. If the pres were on anyone's side in this ordeal, it was his own.

Props to the quotes by that Hunter guy. That response was excellent if I say so myself.

Suge a lot of people, myself included felt like the prez could have reserved comment until Spears returned with proof of his innocents or guilt.

Hind site is 20/20. I am pretty sure the prez is wishing he would have remained silent and just stated "will have a potenital issue in which we are working on a speedy resolution".

Once a resolution had been made, then make a full statement to the press. For most readers, IMO also. It appeared as if the prez had no faith in Spears and already convicted the guy.

As a result the Shreveport media turned it into something very ugly. The media asked one student about the allegation and the student replied "I am not surprized by it becaues of the way they do things around here". That negative statement may have the deciding factor to turn a potential GSU student away from GSU.

This had been the top story ALL day long and by the time the 10pm new rolled around, it was only a whisper during the sports segment of the news. SMH. The link in the shreveport times that gives the information of the outcome is so small you need a scientific telescope just to find it.

I am sorry but this did not make GSU look good at all. I understand the prez doing his job, but it should have been in a more silent manner.

Who does this Earling dude know that every time there is an article about Grambling, his inflammatory arse has to be quoted?

:D

Tru2, that is just the nature of the media. Be it GSU or LSU. The scandal and cover up are always bigger than the ressolution. Good news doesn't sell. We all know that. I have never seen a retraction written with the same gusto as the scandal.

Still, when you are in a position of authority, be you the president of a university or the manager of a dept. You better have an answer when one is required. By Dr, Judson not jumping the gun, and giving the man a chance to explain his side of the issue, exemplifies him doing his job. A comment that some take as being an implication of guilt, is all apart of. But I guess that is really what it comes down to. How you "view" the pres. quotes.

Suge, I totally understand what you are saying. IMO, I just feel like the prez could have kept his personal feelings intact until Spears returned. But as you stated everyone will view it on their own way

Tru, where did Judson's personal feelings stick out in this whole thing? Was he ranting and raving about this on the local Shreveport news? With all of the articles posted on this story, there are only a couple of quotes from the President. He said he was "disturbed" in one quote by this story of Spears not having the degree and he said he was giving Spears a week to clear it up on the other quote. Are you implying that the man being disturbed by all this is a black eye on the school?

Put me on record as being "disturbed" by this also. I think it is sad that you have indiviuals that would go through the trouble they went through to try and expose Spears in such a manner. The people behind this are cowards. If not, they would not have sent this anonymous tip to the ULS Board.

Tru, direct your anger and frustration at the crew behind this fiasco. Judson had to respond and I don't see where he allowed his personal feelings to creep into this ordeal.

"It was disturbing to learn from the University of Louisiana System Office that Mr. Melvin Spears, interim head football coach for Grambling State University, had not earned a master's degree from Northern Arizona University as he stated on his employment application," said Grambling State University President Horace A. Judson in a statement released today. "Mr. Spears indicated to me that he has been working with officials at Northern Arizona University for the past six months to clear up this matter. I have given Mr. Spears one week to produce documentation which verifies that he does in fact have an earned master's degree from Northern Arizona University. While a master's degree is not a requirement to coach here at Grambling State University, it is essential that all information submitted on official employment applications be accurate and certifiable. It is vital that we maintain in every respect the integrity of this institution."

The master's degree has been included on media materials since then.

A transcript specialist in Arizona confirmed Thursday that Spears attended NAU from 1994-97, but found no record of his receiving a degree.

This is only one segment of the original artical that was posted. As of now I can't defend my words the way I intended. Cat Daddy I NEVER said that Judson was ranting and raving, maybe that is the way you perceived my words but I definitely did not intend to come across as such.

IMO as the prez, once again IMO I would not have allowed the cameras on campus until I had all the facts. Issuing a statement is fine, Judson is the prez he is suppose to do as such. During these critical times at GSU (rebuilding mode) perception is everything and negative press is one thing that GSU does not need.

Truth be told, Spears and his degree was already a rumor at GSU so it was only a matter of time before the story broke to the masses. I want GSU to progress and move forward just as much as the next person. There is so much potential for GSU to return to the proud institution we all know it be, just needs the proper leadership in place that has vision to make it happen.

I do agree with you cat daddy that the people behind this stunt are cowards.

How do the Fobb supporters even know that Fobbs wants the GSU job???
He did and probably still does. But, the sad part about is that they would hurt Grambling to get him in. Degrees aren't the only thing they are digging into.

shame, shame, shame. I would love to see these Spears hatas right now. This should have been dealt with without the public scrutiny. Not good publicity for Gram.
