Interim GSU coach's coursework confirmed
July 9, 2004

GRAMBLING — The chair of Northern Arizona University’s department of research, foundations and leadership has confirmed that interim Grambling State coach Melvin Spears completed his master’s coursework — but not the final paperwork needed to get a diploma.

Dr. William Wright told The News-Star on Friday night that he will personally walk Spears’ transcript to the proper office on campus and finish that process. An anonymous tip led to questions about a master’s degree listed on Spears’ resume and on media materials.

“It’s just an unfortunate misunderstanding,” Wright said. “He satisfied the requirement for the degree. What he did not do was file an application for graduation. That’s what he’s out here doing right now.”

Props to Coach Spears and the new president. Again some of you people lack of objectivity convicted an innocent man without a trial. Some of you all (you know who you are) need to grow up.

Praise the Lawd!!!! Hopefully the report is true. Next headline:
"Grambling State Interim Coach Rebuffs Allegations, Proves His Academic Record is Correct"

?It?s just an unfortunate misunderstanding,? Wright said. ?He satisfied the requirement for the degree. What he did not do was file an application for graduation. That?s what he?s out here doing right now.?

WOW!!

It looks like Coach Spears got that all important call from the governor as they were getting ready to strap him in the electric chair.Good for him.

HURRAY! Get the paperwork processed and get back to work Coach Spears and the Grambling Tigers.

This may sound "strange" but the SAME thing happened to my cousin. He attended Northwestern State and finished all his coursework and didn't realize that he met the requirements for graduation. He got a really great job and worked for two years, thinking he did not graduate and with the intentions of graduating. When he applied for another job that required some college, they asked him to submit a transcript and on it was stamped Bachelor of Science in Business CONFERRED.

When he called the Registrar's office, they said he never applied for graduation but that he had earn the hours and thus the degree.

Anywhoooooo, long story to say that I can easily understand that Coach Spears didn't worry about marching at commencement because most folk don't for graduate degrees, at least Master's degrees.

Good luck G-Men, until you get to the Superdome in November! :swink:

well, well, well
not to gloat, but looks like ole mh is right yet again.
:D

Just like I said all day long, GSU didn't need to be putting out press releases charging the guy with falsifying his resume and their Prez needing to shut up until after the deadline had passed.

All the negative press seems like it could have EASILY been prevented if a simple "the matter is being investigated" been the response, if the media had asked. Not that crap about how the Prez is so disturbed "that Spears does not have a masters degree"

What I'm most glad of is what the BROTHER said was TRUE ...

Although I can understand the President saying what he said, I wonder if he didn't create an environment in which Spears may not even want to stay ...

Seems to me that the Prez was doing his part, integrity-wise and was proven correct in giving the coach a chance to clear his name. Everybody comes up smelling like roses... if the report is correct.

The Prez did his part only to made out to look like an azz. Now the prez is going to have to eat his words and offer an aplogy. I wonder if Spears can file suit for deformation of character.

It seems to me that it could have been handled in a (for lack of better words) quieter way. Anyway, if I were Spears I would wonder about the president.

I am going to cosign this. Folks at HBCUs should understand that the press is not always friendly towards our schools.

Grambling coach completed Masters requirements

I'm glad this turned out good for Spears but there was no reason for the Pres to issue a press release without allowing Spears to bring him facts first.

This actually make the Pres look bad in his short tenure.

It's obvious that times have changed because it has been 20 years since I earned my masters and 27 years since getting my B.A.,but ain't no way in hell I would forget to do everything required to get my degree finalized. Especially after doing all of that work?
I didn't even stay around to march at my masters graduation because the dorms closed a few days before graduation and I didn't have motel money to hang around. But you can be sure that every "T" was crossed and every "i" dotted before I left Athens,Ga. and my degree came in the mail about 3-4 weeks later.

Spears' degree seems OK
GSU coach did course work, not actual paperwork for receiving a diploma

GRAMBLING - When interim Grambling State football coach Melvin Spears' former professor backed him up on his master's degree coursework on Friday, it only underscored the deft leadership of GSU's new president.

As questions arose about Spears' credentials, President Horace Judson listened carefully to Spears' version of events and then gave him a week to verify a master's degree in administrative leadership from Northern Arizona University.

"I give credit to Dr. Judson for granting him that chance," said Mike Woods, chairman of the University of Louisiana System board, which oversees GSU. "It's hard to understand how someone would go through 36 hours and not get their diploma - but I understand that Coach Spears' grandfather had died during the process and he didn't get the piece of paper."

A transcript specialist in Arizona confirmed Thursday that Spears attended NAU from 1994-97, but found no record of his receiving a degree.

Dr. William Wright - the chair of the department of research, foundations and leadership at NAU - said Spears completed the coursework in 1997, but must finish some minor paperwork to get the actual degree. Wright confirmed that to The News-Star on Friday night.

"Really, it's a question of having a degree posted - not having completed the degree requirements," Wright said. "Melvin has done that."

Spears remains in Flagstaff, Ariz., where NAU is located, but said he would not comment until he returned to Louisiana.

An official inquiry into his credentials began with an anonymous tip to the ULS board.

"I received a fax from an academic clearinghouse out of the blue which shows no degree," Woods said. "The system office was tipped off that he did not have a valid master's degree, so Grambling is trying to discern that."

Woods spoke with Wright this week, as well. "He contends that the coach did get all the necessary course work," Woods said, "yet never went through the process of getting his diploma granted. That's what we're are trying to determine."

Wright said the necessary paperwork should be completed within days and an updated transcript will be complete well before Judson's deadline, which is Thursday. Judson never confirmed what the consequences for failing to verify the degree might be.

Woods said he felt the situation would be resolved quickly.

"My gut reaction is that he's complied with the degree requirement," Woods said, "but still needs to fill out the paperwork."

A native of Clinton, Spears graduated with a bachelor's degree from Alcorn State then worked for Motorola. He began his coaching career in 1992 as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Casa Grande Union High School in Casa Grande, Ariz. Spears also served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Morgan State University in 1995-96.

Former coach Doug Williams hired Spears as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at GSU in 1997.

The master's degree has been included on media materials since then.

For at least one fan, the anonymous nature of the tip seemed to point to darker motivations.

"I question the motives of the people behind the scenes who initially brought this information to the administration and the media," said Earling Hunter, a Monroe native who graduated from GSU in 1998. "It amazes me that the disdain for Doug Williams and subsequently Coach Spears, is so rampant that they would risk the reputation of the university, and the integrity of the football team - just to get the coach that they want in place."

...

Why the blasting of the pres.? Maybe I am missing something, but all he did was respond to the allegations and questions that were brought to him. The president did his job, and did it well in my opinion. Now had he instantly fired the man and then all of this turned in the manner that it did, I would understand the viewpoints. I just don't see how he created a hostile environment. He wasn't the person(s) who brought the information to the forefront, but as prexy of GSU he had to respond. And his answer was as PC as one could make at that time. Once the newspapers contacted him about the issue, he had to respond.

As for Spears wanting to stay, I don't see too many people walking away from a head coaching job......especially one as high profile as the Grambling job, and after you have proven yourself right.

It seems that whoever wants Spears out has the Prez on their side. There is no way he should have let this get out without letting Spears prove himself first. The Prez and the Anti-Spears group may need to make a trip over to Montgomery to get in joe reed's Railroading the Coach 101 & 102 this fall.
