In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

Before we dive into the third and final blog post in this series, check out our full-length story on all of this in today’s Clarion-Ledger.

Also, you should know that Braddy’s retirement — which was surprisingly announced yesterday — means many — or all – of his below comments might not mean anything. Well, anyway, here’s all that jazz …

In an interview with The Clarion-Ledger in January, Braddy made clear that he’d like Jackson State to at least research the possibility of leaving the Southwestern Athletic Conference. To be clear, Braddy said he had not spoken to new president Carolyn Meyers about this but hoped to. It’s not clear if he did before retiring Feb. 1. Here are some nuggets from our conversation with Braddy …

Said Braddy: “I think we’ve got to evaluate where we are and where we want to go. As far as I’m concerned, the timing is right for us to consider what benefits we can gain by going to another conference.”

Rest story

First, and we’ll get this out of the way right now: Sharp has no plans of getting the SWAC’s automatic playoff bid back. The No. 1 thing now is finalizing the Legacy Bowl with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and getting Tennessee State aboard.

The SWAC, as most of you probably know, invited TSU to join the conference. Sharp and SWAC officials plan to meet with TSU officials soon about the reality of the Tigers joining. And if that happens? Sharp said he would recommend this to the SWAC presidents: Dissolve the two football divisions, rid of the SWAC championship game and play in the Legacy Bowl.

•And then there’s that whole FCS playoff deal. The SWAC gave up its automatic bid into the FCS playoffs in 1999. The league created the two divisions and the SWAC championship game. Said Braddy about that: “Where do we go other than just playing in the SWAC championship? I just think it’s important for us to try getting in the I-AA playoff system or to the next level — preferably to the next level.”
•Recruiting is hurt, Braddy said, because JSU doesn’t go to the FCS playoffs: “A lot of time we run into the recruiting problem because a lot of the kids that we are trying to recruit want to go to the FCS schools (that play in the playoffs). Certainly it would increase our chances of getting better athletes and national recognition.”
•Braddy knows that if JSU left, other SWAC schools and the conference office will feel the effects. We’ve already reported in our Monday blog about JSU and Southern football attendance easily exceeding other SWAC schools. “Being one of the premiere schools in teh SWAC, it’d probably raise some questions from the other schools in the SWAC. Basically, you have two schools in the conference that’s going to draw.”

hmmmmmmmmmm.

Hmmm.

Interesting.

Would JSU fans support the team if they played in the Sun Belt? Or is JSU fan's attendance dictated by the SWAC game experience? Bands, long standing rivalries and so forth?

What say ye?

I wish the SWAC could jus agree to get back in the playoffs and stop all this HBCU Football segregation mess.............Legacy Bowl?????????really???????

So what’s about with that Legacy Bowl? The SWAC champ would play the MEAC champ in a nationally televised bowl game. Sharp said the MEAC would have to give up its automatic playoff bid for the deal to work. The MEAC board of directors hasn’t done that yet.
Who in da hell left the gate open and let this @$$hole out? This guy is the backwards of stupid. How in da hell do he think them folks over there is going to want to give up their automatic bid? And what will he do when they say "no" and if TnST says "no" to joining this conference? Do he have a Plan B? Probably not.

Yeah, but do you think Braddy is right in that your limits have been reached in the SWAC? Even if you go back to the playoffs? There's an opportunity to do better that would be missed by staying in the SWAC. You think?

Honestly, I would say yes. With Duer Sharp running this conference, our limits were reached 2-3 years ago. It's past time.

It's funny to read swac posters bash TnSU for our situation, and the MEAC for wanting to keep there automatic bid. Yet ??????????????????????????????. Bluedog, Panther88. Where u at?

based on what? and what limits did jsu reach?
Based on the direction Sharp is taking this conference and as far as we can go with this conference. To a Championship game. That's it. There is a reason that our teams dont look like they know what to do when we play OOC games. A very good reason. It's because we kick each other around every year, year in and year out in our own sandlot. When it's time to go to someone's else sandlot, we look confuse. The only team I saw that is not easily dumbfounded is Grambling.

The SWAC didn't just start the SCG since Sharp was commissioner. And 2 teams make it to the SCG every year. So if thats the standard of reaching the limit, then ummm......

LOl!!!! We all know this, but Sharp was brought on to move the conference forward past the last commissioner. Who in their right minds hire someone new to just continue a stagnant process of the previous place holder? Every company in America or around the world hires newly employees to take their companies higher and be innovated. Sharp has done neither. He's not business savy enough to help bring in the funds for the conference and he sure isnt innovated enough to have any better ideas than these lame brain Presidents in this conference. Hell, we're stuck in a hole with him just to repeat our same mistakes over and over again.

How much power does Sharp truly have? How much can he do without the backing of the SWAC presidents? Can he go out on his own and have us forego the SCG, for a shot at the playoffs? Can he put this Legacy Bowl "option" on the table without the support of the presidents?

How much? We wont really know, cause he just a "Yes Man". It's evidently that he's doing something......either on his own (which is showing his true business intelligence) or by way of the Presidents (which is showing his true backbone). But either way, he needs to git his @$$ out of the way, cause all he's doing now is blocking us.

He did decide for the SWAC to sign a uniform deal with Russell and for all team teams to wear Nike shoes! doest that account for anything?????????:smh:

I know JSUDMJ2004, but if I can help just one with some light of wisdom, then I've done my job here. Duer is just a middleman. Honestly, the dude is just as confused as Braddy was being our AD. Cant fault him cause he's trying, but you have to know when to say when. When to say, I'm more of a hinderance than help, so I'm stepping down to let someone else take over.

I will support my Tigers if we move. Our President should at least reseach the possibilites of moving to another conference within the FCS and within 20 years moving to the FBS.

Let's move!
