The wet conditions and Southern's Dog Day defense combined to contain the Tigers' high-scoring offense for 3 1/2 quarters. But trailing 21-11, Kent connected with T.C. Taylor on a 32-yard scoring strike to pull the Tigers within 21-17.

Then Kent led JSU on a 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard keeper by Kent with two minutes, 17 seconds left for a 24-21 lead.
