Ignorance or Stupidity??

St. Petersburg, FL hosts the largest MLK parade in the country (http://mlknationalparade.org/) with a Battlle of the Bands the day before. I attended the battle this year for the first time. It is held in a dome (Tropicana Field). It has been a long time since I heard bands in a dome and I quickly remembered why I had skipped all of the previous years. Anyway, the last two bands were Miles College and Bethune Cookman University.

Miles' drumline was first and did a really long (8-9 minute) segment that was very good. They joined the Purple Marching Machine and they put on a very good show. Miles then exited the field to the stands. BCU's drumline came out and did a performance in half the time that was 3 times better than Miles'. Then BCU's band put on a show that was nearly flawless. Seriously, I saw one flub by one person who almost stepped off early and that was it. If they perform as well at the Honda BOTB, there will be very few questions asked.

Getting back to St. Pete ... so, BCU turns to leave the field to a cadence and Miles' decides to blow at them. Miles was backed up in the stands against a wall. All BCU had to do was to park in concert formation right in front of them and peel the purple right off the Miles uniforms. I give BCU credit for leaving the field without so much as a look at Miles. But, it could have gotten ugly.

Was Miles ignorant of what happens to sound inside a dome? Or, were they just galactically stupid?

I see my fellow Callaway HS Alum Pedro Orey is still keeping their drumline together as the Percussion Instructor over there at BCU. Dude was a beast in HS and at Mississippi Valley when Valley was a real good band in them early 80s. Helluva percussionist across the board.
 



I don't know Mr. Orey personally, but that drumline is W-A-Y past together. They were absolutely FANTASTIC...the precision, accuracy, the sticking, cymbals, ... it was ALL on point. They were as good as anything that I have ever seen in DCI or elsewhere.

I think Pedro has DCI playing experience if my memory serves me correctly. He has always been a leader at his craft. He is truly gifted and he is certainly doing a great job teaching it at BCU.
 
Miles took a butter knife to a gun fight.......They were lucky the Pride wasn't in hunting mode or else they would have been devoured....
 
Miles just lacked discipline, to say Miles was ignorant or stupid is taking it a bit too far.

It seems to me that the New band director is trying to hard to establish the once fine reputation Miles had year ago. When i say years ago, i mean like in the late 90's to early and mid 2000 era. Miles Purple Marching Machine was a killer. They had volume, good drills to say the least, and was BEAST in the stands. However, i wouldn't call them stupid either....What band these days hasn't gotten CRANKED on.

I heard that his drumline was in the movie "Drumline."

What's the deal with all the HS bands in Jackson with those capes? Did they get that from SU?

Mane...y'all got all the (black) bands in Jackson (probably the whole state) and in the swac wearing those darn superman capes and loaded with nothing but them loud horns. Yeah...I was sitting in memorial when y'all came in there blasting with them horns and the tubas (sousaphones) arranged on the end of each row like stereo speakers. Next thing I know, every band in the swac doing that. Well...I know the Boom will never wear capes...unlike those other bands in Ms.

Where did Callaway get that orange and black from?...lookin' like Halloween. They supposed to be orange and blue

Do you notice a change in the Sonic Boom in 1982 and now.

hint: It has something to do with the head gear.

If the Sonic Boom does adopt the cap, they won't be alone, because there are many HBCU bands that have adopted that style. Checkout Morgan State, Delaware State, Howard, Miles College, WSSU, Albany, etc.

Our colors always looked dark with the blue at Callaway. Even during my time in the early 80s. The blue was so dark it looked black. But I have seen Callaway change it up over the years to be closer to our colors. As for being loud and brassy. I think the Ms HS bands especially in Jackson followed the Boom's lead on having a bunch of brass. Callaway has always populated the Boom with musicians and is lead by one right now in Dowell Taylor. Nothing new with that. LOL.

The capes I can't tell you. But none of the examples you show look any like SU's capes. Those are longer than ours. Everything for the "S" is traditional. Our capes give us that look and flash due to our marching style. Same with our plumes when everyone else had different style plumes. SU had the shaker plumes to accent the Jaguar Rock. When everybody else put their worse players on Cymbals and hid them. SU put the tall cats who could handle the big Z's in front of the percussion section and made playing Cymbals popular. Everything we do is for a reason. Doc Greggs created that SU style and look. I guess some folks have tried to copy it. I know HS bands in LA do mostly because their band director is a SU alum. Don't know what is going on in the SIP.

JSU was steppin' back then. They probably needed to get rid of the head gear they wore in '82.

Although I believe Chester White's instrument was the bass drum when he marched in the band, Chester was responsible for making sure every cymbal player were in shape to handle those big cymbals. Also, he made sure every move, twirl, the number of twirls up and down, and crash of the cymbals were done on a particular count, which makes Southern's cymbals stand out even more.

Capes..... that's Valley...... you said that SU has influence all the HS bands in Jackson to wear them..... Just letting you know that, that's definitely not the case..... Only Jim Hill does..... & No other band in JPS has ever had capes as well.....

& this is no knock on the jukes either... I'ma fan of them as well

Hence, those are capes as well......I call em' pimp capes. As you know FAMU has those style capes, then Morris Brown adopted them, so i guess it rubbed off on MVSU..... I like them to a certain degree though.

That cape is not like SU's cape. Mr. Mitchell was C'way's band director up until recently retiring and he is a JSU alum and my band director at C'way before him was a JSU alum. I doubt they took anything from SU. I say that as a Juke and C'way alum. Now I will say after I was the first from there to matriculate to the Juke in 84, the numbers from Callaway band to SU band increased over the years. But I doubt any SU influence is happening at my HS band program no more than kids may want to play at Southern. For the most part they still love the Boom and are influenced by what the Boom is doing more so than anything. The uniform having a half cape is just something they must have liked for the look of the band. Who knows. But I seriously doubt Mitchell thought about SU when he picked that uniform.
