GONZALES -- Sorrento native Greg "Toe" Nash, a left fielder on one of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays farm clubs, was arrested Tuesday night after a 15-year-old St. Amant girl accused him and another man of raping her Monday, deputies said.

Nash, 19, 44584 Braud St., Sorrento, was booked on one count of aggravated rape, one count of aggravated crime against nature and -- in an unrelated case -- one count of felony theft. He was taken to the Ascension Parish Jail where his bond was set at $300,000.

Col. Tony Bacala of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said detectives found out about the alleged rape while they were investigating a home theft in Donaldsonville.

Nash was a suspect in the home theft, a lead that ultimately led to his arrest in connection with the alleged rape, Bacala said.

Bacala said the Sheriff's Office initially received a complaint Monday that a residence in Donaldsonville had been burglarized.

A Kentwood water jug half-filled with change, a safe, a pistol and an alarm clock were taken in the theft.

Meanwhile, a woman in St. Amant called the owners of the home that was burglarized because she had found some paperwork in her home that belonged to the victim of the theft.

When detectives went to the St. Amant home to ask questions, a 15-year-old girl who lives in the house told police that Nash; Dalacy Bureau, 19, 38466 La. 42, Prairieville; and James Eric Thomas, 20, 42150 Jamie Road, Prairieville, brought the stolen items to her home.

The girl told detectives that she actually saw the stolen safe and the water jug with coins inside.

While being questioned by police, the girl told them that Nash and Bureau had both raped her after 2 a.m. Monday.

Bacala said all three men were drinking with the girl and other female friends at the St. Amant home after her mother left for work. The girl told deputies that when she went into a bathroom, Nash knocked on the door and asked if she would have sex with him.

After the girl said no, Nash reportedly broke the lock on the door and kicked down the door. The girl said that Bureau held her down while Nash raped her and then Nash held her down while Bureau raped her.

Bureau was booked at the Ascension Parish Jail on Tuesday night on one count of forcible rape and one count of felony theft, Bacala said.

Thomas was booked on one count of felony theft. Bonds had not been set Wednesday afternoon for Thomas or Bureau.

Tuesday's arrest of Nash is not the first time the baseball player has been in trouble with the law.

In January 2001, Ascension deputies arrested Nash on an accusation he hit his 41-year-old live-in girlfriend during a domestic violence incident.

District Attorney Tony Falterman of the 23rd Judicial District talked to the victim and both agreed that Nash could enter a pretrial intervention program and be put on probation so he could go to spring training camp with the Devil Rays.

"I was just trying to help the kid," Falterman said Wednesday afternoon.

"Sometimes you can't help people. I think this guy is beyond help now. All you can do is what you can do. If this is true, I feel for the victim and her family."

Falterman said Nash was supposed to be in California working on getting his General Educational Development certificate. Falterman also said he was under the impression that Nash was back in Louisiana to undergo knee surgery.

Nash plays baseball for the Princeton, W.Va., Devil Rays, the advanced rookie league branch of the major league baseball team, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He's a starting left fielder on the team, which is in the Appalachian League.

During June, July and August, Nash played in 47 games for the Princeton Devil Rays, batting .240. He was at bat 171 times, striking out 69 times, but scoring 23 runs, driving in 29 runs and getting 41 hits, including one triple and eight home runs.

Nash's coach, Devil Rays general manager Jim Holland, said Wednesday when contacted in Princeton that he had not heard about the arrest.

"All I can tell you is that Nash's time in Princeton last summer was uneventful," Holland said.

"His behavior was great. There were no problems and his behavior was exemplary. He was always easy-going around the team and he got along with the fans great."

When asked about Nash's status on the team as a result of Tuesday night's arrest, Holland deferred to executives with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Florida.

Rick Vaughn, vice president of Devil Rays public relations, said Wednesday night that the baseball organization found out about Nash's arrest only Wednesday afternoon.

"We are not in possession of all the facts yet and we have not spoken to Mr. Nash yet. At this point, we will let the judicial system run its course," Vaughn said.

Tuesday's arrest and the January 2001 domestic violence arrest represent just a couple of Nash's problems with the law in Ascension Parish.

Bacala said Nash was arrested in February 2001 on a count of possession of alcohol under the age of 21. In March 2000, Nash was arrested and booked with entry in or remaining on premises after being forbidden, simple battery, theft, damage to property and disturbing the peace.

In April 2000, Nash was arrested and booked with simple battery, simple robbery, possession of marijuana and possession of Valium. Later that year in November, Nash was booked with possession of marijuana again.

I saw this in The Advocate, but did not read the whole story. Sad, but typical stories coming from both sides the river.
