A state school grad is no better than a Tech/Community College grad. In Georgia, You can attend a state school for free with the HOPE Scholarship.

State School- four year degrees, undergrad programs, and liberal professors

Tech/Community College- 2 year degrees, specialized training in Nursing, Auto Mechanic, Business, Marketing, Computer Science, and etc.

Only high profile professions need 4+ years of school. If you're not studying to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, dentist, or something requiring at least a Master's Degree. Then, you will have to compete with the two year degree grads. Plus, you attended a state school( Jackson State, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Mississippi Valley State, Alabama A&M and others) Clark Atlanta and Morris Brown(private schools) even has scoreboard.

Check yourself before running that smack out there. If education was that important to you, then you would be at Harvard, M.I.T., or Cambridge

You are at a STATE school where even a "D" student can get in with a decent SAT score.

Bottom Line: The Dollar Bill makes the world go around. The Mortgage lender could care less about your education. A degree from A&M will not pay your rent. You need that dollar bill to do that. Go find that white man with your state school degree and get a job!!!!

"Don't wish for it. Work for it" Friggin Democrats smacking down on 2 year grad students. That's just like a Harvard grad smacking Southern. You people are very bush league.

TRU3000,

I see you can't stand the topic. This definately qualifies as a smack topic. One of your posters ran that DeKalb Tech smack out there. Let's battle this thing out. State vs Tech, Private vs State, Harvard vs State.

I have done more with my Associate in Applied Technology(in Marketing Administration) Degree in 1 year than you will do with yours(in a lifetime) I don't need to do a George O'Leary. I am proud of my two year degree.

Friggin State schools throwing smack.

NI's THOUGHTS ON @ YEAR DEGREES!!!

Agreed, JT. He is quite lame. A 2 year degree. Sheeit! They got monkeys in California that have compoleted 2 year programs.

The reality about these tech school knuckaheads is that, yes, they are in demand and they are commanding good salaries now, but, over time, they reach a pay ceiling that only a bachelors degree can bust through. Whereas our state school diploma earnings really have no bounds, he will be maxed out soon enough. And you are dead wrong, Media Mutt, every one of my potential employers asked about my degree. Maybe the crawfish shack you're working at don't give a shiznitt, but the Fortune 200 companies I've worked for sure do. If I only had a two year degree in what you're saying you do, I'd never get in this company!

Don't be fooled, people, this jokah hung his Vo-Tech "degree" in Cotton Gin Machinery Repair, or whatever he says he has, in the sh*tta next to the can, so's he could wipe his azz when he runs out of toilet papuh and his underage Cambodian wife he bought in the service ain't there to fetch him some more.

He'll be 50 and making the same money as he was when his butt was 30 and then he'll be singing a different tune, trying to get his bachelors degree at night at one of Sally Struthers' places.

NI's got thiz guy pegged: Four hundred pounds, kicked out of two state schools for arson, partying and grades, don't know if he's gay or not, working behind the counter at a video rental place or fried shrimp shack in Selma or Tupelo; spending his paychex on pizza and porn rentals; drives an '88 Corsica that has no wheel covers and no headlights and no back window. Lives with his mom who does his laundry and pays all his bills.

The message: Get your four year degree.

Your statement above isn't entirely true. Believe it or not, there are corporations that require a minimum of a bachelor's degree with good grades to be considered for employment in more areas than you listed above. Of course once employed it is up to the person how far he/she advances from that point, for the most part, but not always. In some instances that is unfair because there are many talented individuals that do not have degrees that could be a tremendous asset to the company, but the man with the gold makes the rules.

Media Guy, I have read profiles on many African Americans who have received degrees from State colleges and universities such as those listed above who have gone on to compete with the most elite in both graduate and post graduate studies as well as the employment arena.

I won't engage in dialog that will bash the educational accomplishments of probably 99% of those who have entered institutes of higher learning.

You are at a STATE school where even a "D" student can get in with a decent SAT score.

Indeed there are STATE schools with open enrollment programs. This has afforded many students from various circumstances an opportunity to "change their resume" by putting the past behind them, recognizing their potential and capitalizing on it. Special thanks to the STATE schools who are willing to take a chance on them.

Please add to that a degree of character, integrity, discipline, work ethics and some knowledge of what you suppose to be trained to do.

Ok, work for it - no problem. Democrat - yes I am, but choose not to disrespect anyone based solely on a two year grad student status or political affiliation.

Actually a person convinced against his will is of the same opinion still, therefore for whatever reasons you have to single out certain individuals for praise or wrath, enjoy your freedom of choice.

I graduated from a state school and did benefit from open enrollment. More so than anything else I saw completing my education as a challenge and I am definetly in a better position because of it. There are some fields where a two year degree is all that you need. Four years of knowledge in a particular field seems like it would be more beneficial.
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

Hey Medieval Guy.......

What honors/academic fraternity did you get selected for when you went to your TECH/COMMUNITY college I know they didn't have Phi Beta Kappa there ????
So I bet it was MASTA BETA
:D :D :D :D

Regardless of the field, most employers prefer people who have Bachelor Degrees because it shows that one has the DISCIPLINE and COMMITTMENT to complete at least four years of schooling. I don't care if a person has a BA in Advanced Flatulence from South Dakota State, that still hold more weight realistically than an Associate's.

Technology and Nursing are really to only two fields where a person can be successful after only two years of schooling. To be honest, a lot of Nursing students go on to get that B.S.N. and a lot of Tech students go back to a university. Why? Because a BA/BS holds more weight. Sure, there are a lot of people out there who a getting certificates from tech schools, but what's going to happen when employers start asking for more education? There was a time where all one needed to be a secretary/administrative assistant was either office experience or an Associate's. Now even jobs like that are asking for Bachelor's. If you look in the Classifieds, you will be hard pressed to find any decent paying job that does not require a BA/BS. Another news flash, a two-year degree in Business, Marketing, or Human Resources is WORTHLESS. Most Associate Degrees were designed for further schooling at a 4-year institution. Specialized training is just that, designed for one specialty. With a four-year degree, I am not pigeonholed into one career. If someone who went to tech school for plumbing and heating gets bored with that, they will have to go back to school before they could do anything outside of that.

Where a person went to school really doesn't make a difference. Going to a big-time private university will not truly prepare you for the real world any differently than a state school. Students here that go to Emory or Oglethorpe really don't end up any better than the ones that went to UGA or Georgia State. Actually, the average GPA for incoming students to UGA this year was a 3.5. So that whole "D" student argument is moot. A lot of schools are doing away with their open admissions standards. This is sending a lot of those students to community colleges, right alongside those of you who think that getting a little tech certification makes you better than someone with a Bachelor's:)

So, because some person "dissed" your particular school, you want to hate on every single person who has gotten a degree from a four-year college or university? That is lame as "L"...

Well, I have experienced both state and private. I can truly say that I value my state school educational experience, moreso than this private stuff. I got way more than what I paid for from the state school, and WAYYYYYYYY LESS for WAYYYYY MORE money at the private school. Private schools are not all that people think. Trust me.

I agree with everyone else. An Associate's Degree isn't all that it's pumped up to be. Outside of technology, nursing, and a little business.....you can't do much. By the way, most of the salaries are in the high teens and 20K range. If a person is content with that, then fine. With a bachelor's degree, the typical salary is usually in the 30K range. Some go as high as 55K in fields like accounting and engineering. As someone mentioned before, most LPNs (A.D. nurses) go back for the B.S.N. or are pressured to do so. Also, most positions available to people with Associate degrees are at the bottom of the totem pole, require more of the "dirty"' work (stuff that really no one wants to do), have less opportunity for advancement, pay increase increments are small, and people have to really overwork themselves just to live decently. I would encourage anyone with an Associates degree to go back and get a Bachelors.
