If The Bayou Classic Is Moved To Houston......

Do you guys think the game should be moved also? Say, the Saturday before Thanksgiving?

Tradition will be broken if the game is moved out of the state anyway, so why not have the game on the traditional rivalry week. By moving it, it would give the school who's not going to the SWAC Championship game, a chance to maybe go to the playoffs.

Good Topic...

Well, I think that if the Classic is moved...then maybe we should consider changing the date of the game. It makes perfect sense. There is no tradition in Houston, and therfore no tradition to play the game on Thanksgiving weekend. But as long as there is a SCG, I don't think it will matter much what weekend we play the game........

I heard on WWL this weekend, Mayor Morial saying that the city is trying to come up with a package for the Classic. In terms of room rates and a few other things. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens....

Hmmmm...

Interesting idea. The game has traditionally been on the week after Thanksgiving so that it would not conflict with Tulane's use of the dome. Some may remember that there were years (in the early stages) that the game was played prior to Thanksgiving.

There was also an article in the Montgomery Advertiser that quoted LC Cole as stating that he would like to be able to participate in the playoffs. Johnnie Cole mentioned moving the TDC to the Labor Weekend and treat the game as the season opener.

SubTopic

When does our contract with NBC expire? I was disappointed to know that both schools only get $200k from this deal. We need a commissioner to put together a package with FOX Southwest to do a game of the week (every team has to featured at least once) that includes the Bayou Classic as part of the package. The total package would be divided equally among all member schools regardless of how many times you appear. Just make certain that the annual payout to each team exceeds the $200K that GSU and SU pockets now. That way, you are not punishing GSU & SU by taking away their TV deal.

all I got to say, Reliant Stadium, which is state of the art or the delapidated Super Dome.

All these folks hating the possible move but knowing they'll be right down here if it moves.

The only thing about the stadium is the cheaper rent. Otherwise, I hadn't heard any serious complaints about the dome. I did see that this year the roof was leaking.

The use of a "new" stadium is not as big a selling point as the "cost" of whatever stadium is used.

I hear your going to save a lot of dough by playing in our stadium. That's all I got to say.

My playing date decision would have to be based on TV availability. If this game was played a week earlier this year, it would have been backseat to the Notre Dame/Navy game on that day.

A Fox SW broadcast is no comparison to the households reached by NBC. We don't need to screw with the NBC setup since the conference does not have any worthwhile TV contract.

I also think we place too much emphasis on at-large playoff bids. In more times than not, the only SWAC teams ranked high enough to get an at-large bid will be playing in the SCG. Our teams simply don't schedule the right opponents to have 3 or 4 SWAC teams ranked in the Top 20.

Regarding the TV Contract. It is my understanding (from briefings that we received at SU's 2001 National Alumni Conference) that both schools are actaully BUYING the TV time. We weren't initailly buying the time; but, several years ago NBC was planning to drop the game because of poor ratings through out all households, nationwide. Southern and Grambling did not want to loose the opportunity to be on National Television; so, they buy the TV time using the proceeds raised from selling commerials. The 200,000 is what's left over.

Okay, I see where you're coming from. But if we were to make a deal with Fox Southwest that would pay $250K to each school in the league (for the total package...10 games per season plus the Bayou Classic) based upon $2.5 million divided by 10 teams.

What you would have is a revenue maker for all the teams and weekly exposure for the entire conference. We are a conference, we need to generate revenue so that all of our teams will grow.
Until we improve from top to bottom, it's gonna be the same ole same old!

I agree that we should be comparison shopping. But, be honest with yourself. How many people do you know watch Bayou Classic on TV? How many people that aren't Southernites or Gramblinites do you know watch it? That is the problem. We haven't watched those or the BET games, especially if it isn't our school playing. That is why if I'm not at a game, I watch the HBCU football games on TV. 1, to see how good other HBCUs are playing and 2 to help the ratings. We have to start watching HBCU games on TV no matter who it is. It just doesn't make sense that every SU/JSU, GSU/JSU, FAMU/SU, HAMPTON/FAMU game isn't on TV. Why don't you think the Fox Sports regional networks (i.e. Fox Sports SW) or ESPN II doesn't show more of our games. Simply because we haven't gain their respect to give us the airtime when we have our schools on other networks.

I think we should go to Houston for a year or 2 if NO doesn't get serious soon, so they can have time to 2nd guess themselves. Once it is decided that we are taking it to Houston, SU needs to get with PV and convince them how positive it would be for both schools to play the SU/PV in San Antonio. SU doesn't need to go to Houston twice and going to San Antonio will help both school's recruiting in football and admissions, while not jeopordizing our presence in Houston.

PEACE!!!

Whats so positive about moving our game from Houston to a majority Hispanic area of San Antonio?

If we can get our projective stadium going, we can move it back to campus and keep all that money thats being paid to Houston for use of the stadium that the game is being played in. If anything I would love to have this game played in Austin where there will be a better following of PV people that are in that area versus San Antonio.

MikeBigg, lets be realistic about our product. We don't follow it the way we should with rating and attendance(exception is all the classics). And no one is going to pay that kind of money to show SWAC football, thats why most of it is syndicated.

But back to the subject, they need to show New Orleans how much economic impact this game has on the area by moving it for 2 years. I bet when it's time to go into negotiations for a new contract they come to the table with checkbook in hand. A good example of this is when the city of Philadelphia didn't get on board for the annual Army/Navy game. They moved it and they showed them on much of a impact that game was on the city. It's now back and they got what they wanted.

Houston is also known as the Bayou City unlike New Orleans which is the Crescent City.

I don't see SU-Grambling allowing the Bayou Classic to be packaged in a deal with other schools. It doesn't even make sense, (Just being honest here, no smack) that very many other SWAC games are "worth" (to a tv network) close as much as the Bayou Classic to allow SU and Grambling to make as much as they do on the classic, much less every school.

There are blacks there also, especially athletes. Hey, if you think there are atheletes in Austin and black students that we could attract to our schools, Austin don't sound bad to me. My point is to take the game somewhere, preferably in TX, that would benefit both school's programs and do so somewhere they aren't already visiting. Again, this is my suggestion only if the Classic moves to Houston to keep SU from going there twice.

Lewis is right. It does not make any sense to move the Bayou Classic from a national network to a regional network. The conference does need to create a better TV deal but all of our games don't have to be part of it.

In my humble opinion, the Bayou Classic, the only football game between Louisiana's HBCUs should be in Louisiana. Imagine the Magic City Classic in Nashville... the Capital City Classic in NO... the Florida Classic in Atlanta... the Turkey Day Classic in Jackson...
Get my point.

Simply doesn't make sense. NO needs to step up to the plate and keep the Louisiana tradition in Louisiana.

On the flip side, we have to do what makes dollars or it doesn't make sense anyway.

I'm a Bison, so I know I don't have much clout on this topic, but a TON of Black folks in the north watch the Bayou Classic. I mean a TON. Why? Cause for a lot of people, that's their only exposure to Black College Sports for the entire year. HBCUs really underestimate their pull and appeal. Folks don't fill the stadiums in Indy, the Meadowlands, Cincy and Chi-Town to watch Classics for nothing. The Bayou Classic may not bring in big ratings in DesMoines, Iowa, but in Brooklyn, Harlem, Philly and Southeast DC, it's REAL popular. :D

JagsPride,

That's what I've been screaming everytime talk of moving the game comes up. How can you play a rivalry game between instate schools in another state. It makes no sense. The game has to stay in Louisiana. I still stand by my idea of playing it in S'port one year and BR another year. The people who come for the game will still be there. We may not be able to accomodate all of the "classic groupies" but the true supporters of the schools and fans will be taken care of.

San Antonio? Please? TSU and Gram tried it and I doubt they will come back. You have to have a great marketing department to pull that off.

I rather PV and SU play in Dallas before Gram. We should dump Gram from the Cotton Bowl Classic and play SU instead. I would love that.

I'm not an advocate of moving the game at all but agree that something have to be done within the hotel industry and the city here to better accomodate the fans. Personally doesn't like the idea of temporary moving to Houston then back to Nawlins. Don't like the 2 year deal Houston is offering. Make it longer and show what you got. What happens after the second year, the same ole stuff here, higher hotel rates, dome rental, etc. If we are gonna get screwed I rather got screwed at home.;) Furthermore if we leave Nawlins it will be difficult to move back. Do you think they will keep those days open waiting for us to return? Events are booked 7-10 years out. Some convention wants that slot and book it for the next 10 years and we're stuck in Houston with a 2 year deal and no bargaining power.

Other than Tiger stadium(92k) the next largest venue is State Fair stadium in S'port 50-55k when renovation is complete.

I'm sure they aren't saying go take the Classic to a regional network. They are saying take it to the National Fox Network. Yet, I'm saying look into it, but Fox needs to up the ante for us to move it from NBC. I'm saying other HBCU games should be on the regional networks (Fox SW, ESPN II, etc...). But, I really feel a major reason we aren't is due to the fact we just don't support each other by watching the games on TV if it ain't our school. Thus, we prove their stigmatism to be true about us.

PEACE!!!

I typed Fox Southwest, but I meant the National Network. The reason I said to include the BC is to allow us to ask the $2.5 or above price. If we divide the $2.5 equally among all conference members this is the same as the $200K that GSU & SU currently receives.

My feeling is that we need to grow as a conference. We cannot continue to exist the way we are now. That's why we get no respect in terms of seeding, scheduling, and recruiting of student athletes. We need a strong commissioner that will say push for facility upgrades, reduce scheduling of DII opponents in football to 1 per year, and require minimum of 50 scholarships in football.

I emphasize football becuz it is our money making sport. There's no excuse that we are not the most successful and dominant conference in 1AA football. But let's be honest, lately it seems that we are losing ground.
