Third & Long: Extra week adds twist to I-AA schedules
By Tony Moss, The Sports Network
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Who said 13 is an unlucky number?
This year and in 2003, college football fans will be graced with a 13th weekend of regular season gridiron play, as a result of what can best be described as a delightful calendar intricacy. Division I-A and I-AA teams are permitted to play 12 contests this season and next, and many have exercised that option.
Below, we rate a number of the non-conference schedules in I-AA, with a list of the 10 toughest, 10 lightest, and 30 notable games against the soon-to-fluctuate grouping known as I-A. A conference-by-conference "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" evaluation follows the Top 10 lists. If you don?t see your team in that section, we didn?t forget you. That simply indicates that the non-conference schedule in question was nothing to cheer or jeer about.
10 Toughest
1. McNeese State (Nebraska, Louisiana-Monroe, Western Kentucky, Youngstown State, Grambling State)...When you factor in the quality of play in the rugged Southland, there are probably two dozen I-A schedules easier than McNeese?s.
4. Florida A&M (Miami (FL), Troy State, Tennessee State, Morris Brown)?Rattlers should beat up on their conference, provided Hurricanes don?t pummel them too much in the season-opener.
10 Lightest
1. Maine (Central Connecticut State, Howard, Florida International)...Excuses about geography and a difficult conference don?t get the Black Bears off the hook. Three blowouts to ensue, with few impressed.
2. Bethune-Cookman (Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Morris Brown, Savannah State)...No risk, and once again for the Wildcats, likely no reward.
3. Bucknell (Cornell, St. Mary?s (CA), Duquesne)...Ten games in a season when the NCAA allows 12, and not a single non-conference opponent to boast about.
4. Alabama State (Chattanooga, Tuskegee, Morris Brown, Savannah State, Miles)...Just when the Hornets had started to build something in their state, they loaded up with cupcakes. Not a good trend. :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh: :emlaugh:
How could I ever had miss this???!!!!!
