Hurricane Frances puts JSU's opener in cloud of uncertainty

Jackson or N.O. would have been better. Frances may even turn up the east coast and Hampton right in the path.

J-State to flee Frances

Tigers' opener shifted to Hampton, Va., due to hurricane

Jackson State's season opener against Hampton on Saturday was moved from Orlando to Hampton, Va., because of the threat of Hurricane Frances.

So much for those original travel plans.

"It has been a little hectic around here to say the least," Jackson State athletic director Roy Culberson said. "The phones have been ringing off the hook. And I've been trying to arrange air fare, hotel reservations, food, buses, you name it, so that the team can get there.
"We've been working toward going to Orlando for six months. We've had a day and a half to make plans for Virginia. We're going to make it work, though."

The final decision to move the game, which was part of the Labor Day Classic, came Wednesday morning after a teleconference between administrators from both schools and Classic organizers. Atlanta, Birmingham, Mobile, New Orleans, Washington and Jackson were among the cities contacted as possible alternate sites, but a deal couldn't be reached in any of those locations on such short notice.

"Hampton is really the only facility we could find to play at," Culberson said. "We wanted to play the game here, but the stadium wasn't going to be ready. We wanted to make sure we played 11 games, and this was the only way we could make it work."

The game will no longer be linked to the Labor Day Classic. Instead, it will be treated like a normal regular-season game.

"JSU was to make in the neighborhood of $100,000 plus expenses if the game had been played in Orlando as originally scheduled. It will cost the Tigers approximately $70,000 to make the trip to Virginia.

Culberson is in negotiations with Hampton officials in hopes of arranging a home-and-home series. Part of the agreement calls for Hampton to pay JSU a guarantee as the visiting team this year, and JSU would return the favor next year.

JSU also received $11,000 from Labor Day Classic organizers upon signing the contract, money that can also be used to help offset the cost.

The team was originally scheduled to fly from Jackson to Orlando today. It is now leaving Jackson at 3:30 p.m. Friday on a charter flight, set to arrive in Virginia at 6:40 p.m. The team will fly back to Jackson Saturday night following the game.

The game will be played at Hampton's 17,000-seat Armstrong Stadium, where the Pirates are 6-1 over the past two seasons. The Citrus Bowl in Orlando seats 70,000.

Because of the 9-game mandate, we probably won't be able to get a return game from Hampton so I hope they can give us some type of guarantee...that is only fair.

I wouldn't worry about a return game from Hampton..........as you know, our football dept. is working on some more lucrative things (hopefully, it'll be more on that to come). I say let's just take the Labor Day Classic fiasco in stride and not worry about a return game.
