HOWARD REQUIRES ALL FRESHMEN TO UNDERGO ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING

JOURNAL OF BLACKS IN HIGHER EDUCATION, 11-19-04

While blacks are more than 12 percent of the U.S. population, only 4 percent of all business firms in the nation are owned by blacks. And black-owned firms account for only 0.4 percent of all sales.
In order to foster increased entrepreneurship in the black community, the Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation of Kansas City gave a $3.1 million grant to Howard University to start what is called an "entrepreneurial boot camp." On Saturday mornings this fall, freshman students at Howard are required to attend a series of lectures and workshops. The program is designed to demonstrate to Howard students that business opportunities exist in every field, no matter what course of study students choose to pursue in college.

The entire freshman class is divided into 54 groups and each must develop a business plan for a hypothetical entrepreneurial enterprise. The groups that come up with the best plan win scholarship money.

I think it is a great idea, but what about the students that are invloved in the band program? There should be a way that they can participate as well. But the idea in itself is great, and should become a requirement for all HBCU's after various nitches are worked out.

Superlative idea.

Thinking "outside of the box" will only serve to uplift and embolden.

Kudos to the Flagship.

Sounds like UMAB. Nevertheless, a good program.

I know Morgan, and UMES have similar requirements but it's limited to the School of Business.

With the history of places like Auburn Avenue (Atlanta), Beal Street (Memphis) and T-town (Tulse), we need more classes like this one.

And they also require you to provide the history of your immunization record before being allowed to take a single class and if you don't provide, they GIVE you what they feel you need for your age (HU hospital).

That entrepreneurial lectureship is interesting.
