I grew in an all black neighborhood (except for some older italians who chose to stay after "white flight". My grammer school (Catholic) was 60% black 35% mexican and 5% other. The daycare center I attended from the ages of 4-9 was all black and we recieved a steady dose of nutrition of black pride E-VER-RE-DAY! That was the time period of being "Young, Gifted and Black". During the summers They took us on field trips to the museums (Science and Industry, Field, Art Institute), beaches, zoos and forest preserves. Also, they would take the boys to Chicago Cubs games. It either rained or they lost (Still gotta lovem' though). :lol:
During my summers between the ages of 11-14, I went to camp in Wisconsin (near Green Bay) for a week with my grammer school and another parrish (catholic church) that was normally mixed with whites and hispanics also from Chicago. The remainder of the summer was spent in a program sponsored by the Archdiocese for boys who attended catholic grammer schools who performed average and above academically. Half the day was spent in the classroom learning advanced math, english and religion. The other half revolved around team sports (softball, soccer, basketball, and track). We also went on field trips to the planetarium, Indiana Sand Dunes, and THE CHICAGO BEARS TRAINING CAMP!!!!! Blacks made up 10% of the population of the participants (at the most 10 out of between 60 to 70 males). The remainder was an equal balance of whites, hispanics, and asians.
I attended a magnet high school(55% black, 20% white, 20% hispanic, and 5% other).
My first exprience attending a predominantly black institution was not until college.
