Hot Rumor: The Comegy buyout is on the table.....

Should we judge Comegy by these standards?

These are a few comments the coach made at his introductory press conference after he was hired.

"When other teams play us we want them to know that we are Jackson State University. I want these guys to play with tenacity and aggression every play," Comegy said. “When they are off the field we want them to act like gentleman, but on the field we want them to act like back alley boys."

"This program will be committed to winning,â€￾ he said “I will not be on the sideline with a whistle acting like a coach. I will be on the sideline performing as a real coach."

The same people who wanted Hughes out for Bell, now want Comegy out. Hughes probably had more wins than Bell and Comegy combined. :shame:

I am not sure if we really need to fire Comegy. You hire a new person and you don't know what you are going to get. Comegy came to us with a good track record but now we understand more about who Comegy is. I think sometimes, if you have a broken clock, you just have to fix it. We KNOW what needs to be fixed with this staff in all phases of the game. Comegy simply needs to release 3-4 people on his staff and bring in some other people. We pay well enough to get some good asst. coaches.

Comegy may very well be the problem but sometimes you have to figure that out. I believed Hughes was a problem in the early 2000s because I didn't see what contributed as a coach. At least Comegy can serve as DC and call plays if needed.

We wanted them out for different reasons. Also, I don't think people REALLY want Comegy out. We just don't like how he has let Woody control the offense while standing by and doing nothing about it. If he does not get rid of Woody, it will be like firing himself.

Comegy needs to be gone for a host of reasons. His teams aren't diciplined, we have haphazard recruiting and we've underachieved every year under him. But, you can make a case for keeping him around with staff changes. And that will be enough to appease the 99.9% of the fans that don't know football. But the knowledgable fans know Comegy is a lost cause and not worth what we're paying him.

Sound like Webster

Webster said "We know what the problem is and at the end of the season we are going to fix it"

Yep, it was fixed.

TP, the entire nation told JSU not to hire Comegy, he finally found out coaching at JSU was not the same at TU - winning in the SWAC was not the same as playing Miles and Morehouse.

Would this have anything to do with Comegy fail to beat Webster :)

Whatever happens with Comegy, I don't have confidence in our ability to hire a decent coach. We'll announce a "nationwide" search conducted by an alumni committee and you know what'll happen after that.

But you all said that Webster did not fix the problems. JSU will make sure that Comegy makes the right changes or hold him accountable. And no, JSU is nothing like TU, Comegy found that out the first DAY of check-ins when the reporters showed up... He has never been under such a microscope not only from JSU fans but all of BCF. However, a good D2 coach could be a good 1-AA coach. Comegy may still be. Our DC had to learn how not to be a D2 coach. Woody has never seemed to learn that.

You seem to think that Comegy's assistants are the problem. They aren't. But, because he has 2 yrs left on his deal you can at least make the case for giving him a chance to shake up his staff. Probably won't do any good tho. How often does shaking up your staff work? Maybe 5% of the time.

To be fair in his first year the squad was 6-5, then 8-4 (SWAC title win) then 7-5 last year (SWAC title game appearance) before 3-7 this season. I don’t think you run a coach after four years and he has taken the program to two conference championships. What are you saying to the next coach? There are always going to be ups and downs.

You go back and look at some of the good head coaches and they have had some really good season and really bad seasons at a school.

Plus, you will never be able to please the fans all the time as a coach. It is impossible. Additionally, fans have to be realistic when it comes to the expectations of the program. It is a process.

Comegy came to JSU with a 90-26 record, and only had four losing seasons before 2009. I say give him at least one more season before firing him. If things continue on this path, then it would be hard to argue keeping him around. But not fire the guy after his first losing season.

I repeat my statement from earlier

Some schools pay their Coach to coach
Some schools pay their Coach to Win…

Things that are good enough in Group A are not good enough in Group B. However, every coach knows what group his school falls in before he takes the job.

See, this is exactly what I was just talking about. You make a compelling case for keeping Comegy that would satisfy most alums. But that doesnt mean its correct. Let me ask you this, since you appear to have pretty good sense: Should a coach with a winning record ever be fired?

What are you saying to the next coach?

The same thing every school says to every coach: "Win or get out!". Kendrick, I don't know how many games you've seen in person over the past three or four years, but Comegy's true performance as the HC goes beyond W's and L's and trips to B'ham (for whatever that's worth). I was able to witness the JSU/ Bama State game in person this year. We won, but I left the game mad and disappointed as L.

And this is what will not be tolerated. I want the wins, but I want them convincingly. Comegy hasnt been able to perform that and just allows Woody to do whatever he wants like a spoiled brat. I think Woody is Comegy's love child.

You know the answer to that...but there are reasons for a coach to get fired when he has a winning record....see Hughes. However, we gave Hughes a chance to make changes and he refused until his final season. We don't REALLY know what the problem is. All we know is that we don't like what we see. But we also know that Comegy does not know schitt about offense or he is content with letting Woody run it. Let's try to fix to offense and if we can't, then maybe we will know that Comegy is the problem. However, I must agree with Kendrick. Look at what AlaState did to LC and Coe. Sometimes you have to be patient with a coach. We know what one of our big problems is now. Let's go after the problem before going after Comegy. It's only fair to give the man a chance to fix it.
