Hornets still have chance in SWAC

After Alabama State's third Southwestern Athletic Conference loss two weeks ago against Jackson State, head coach Charlie Coe had pretty much given up on a trip to the SWAC title game.

But a win and an off weekend later, ASU finds itself with a shot. A long shot, but still a shot.

"We've pretty much got to win out and Jackson has to lose three of its last four games for us to make it," Coe said. "I'm not someone who pays much attention to that stuff and just believe that it'll work itself out. I happened to check it out today and saw that we're not completely out of it. We have to take care of business and hope we get some help. Stranger things have happened."

The biggest help ASU could get right now is the continued healing of QB Alex Engram.

Engram, who's missed the majority of ASU' last three games, is trying to bounce back from an injured throwing shoulder. He has practiced with the team the last few days and was throwing short passes with some zip during Sunday' workout.

The leaves the obvious question: Who will be ASU's starter for Saturday's Magic City Classic?

T'Chelpio Woods, who started in Engram's absence, went down with a shoulder injury of his own against Prairie View A&M, which forced third-string Jason Bruce onto the field. Bruce struggled in his first action, which led to the coaches inserting Engram for a few plays.

"Right now, T'Chelpio is hurting, too," Coe said. "We're not allowing him to take any shots or run any plays where he could get hit. Basically, he and Bruce are splitting time under center. We'll have to get later into the week before we make a decision on who'll be starting."

The MCC, ASU's annual matchup with rival Alabama A&M, has become one of the premiere games in the SWAC. That's in addition to its status as one of two win-or-find-another-job games for ASU's head coach.

"I don't look at it as a game that will make up for (a SWAC championship), but it's definitely an important game," Coe said. "You win it and a lot of people are very happy with you. I believe we have a good chance to win this one. I mean that. If we can have a couple of things go our way, we've got an excellent chance."

Tough start has Alabama State coach under scrutiny

Charles Coe has never felt accepted at Alabama State.

Despite making back-to-back trips to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game and winning it in 2004, Coe has never gotten the credit he feels he deserves as the coach of the Hornets.

Instead, it has gone to Coe's predecessor, L.C. Cole, who was fired in August 2003. Coe, who has admitted he inherited a championship-caliber team, led the Hornets to the championship game in 2003 and 2004. The 2004 team captured ASU's first SWAC title since 1991.

Still, ASU fans didn't feel Coe had much to do with it. He was using Cole's players and coaches.

"I could have come in here with an ego and hired all new coaches," Coe told the Montgomery Advertiser earlier this season. "It was my team. I could have done what I wanted. But I recognized what was in place here and understood that these players had been through a lot.

"I knew by doing that that a lot of people would look at it just the way they are. I don't think a lot of coaches would have handled it this way."

Coe handled it that way and has drawn criticism throughout his tenure.

After failing to reach the championship game with a senior-laden team a year ago and with his team off to a 3-4 start this season and virtually out of the race for the Eastern Division title, the critics have grown a little louder. So loud in fact that Coe said he wasn't sure he would seek an extension of his current contract, which expires after next season.

"I'd like to leave on my own terms," Coe said. "Whether it be at the end of my contract or whenever, I'd just like to go out on my own terms. I think I've earned that."

After the heinous ass-beatin' your team suffered Saturday, I can understand why you would support somebody else....anybody!!

Cause whatever team you pull for ends up losing.
Don't act like you don't have a history on tspn.
:lol::lol:

Well, that is only when I NEED a win. In this case, JSU does not need you to win. I just want to see Annie Mae lose. We won't lose a game in Jackson this year, we control our own destiny. The only team we have to worry about is Peanut Butter.

In fact, the FIRST major time people jumped down my throat was when I said JSU was STILL in the SWAC race in 2000. In that year, you were riding high and I said that IF AAMU beats you and JSU wins out (and there was one more thing), we can go to Bham. ALL of those things happened ....but then we lost to Peanut. This time, we can lose to Penut and still go to Bham to get our SWAC Championship.

ummm TP,
You'll lose to PB. and A&M. and Alcorn.
And I'm not all that convinced that you'll beat PV.

sorry, but your team aint good. At all.

You really need to start thinking up some outlandish scenarios (and I know you can do that with ease. ) for jsue to get to Bham.

AHH...............Why wouldn't we want yall to fall 2 games back.
That's just smart football.:whatever:

But...................That's also why ya'll still championshipless...............No Vision of the big picture.
:D

Rumor has it, LC was lined up to take over after Pete. If LC has "good sense", he would go to Southern if given the choice.

99,

We're rebuilding. With a team of underclassmen.

jsue on the other hand, got hoodwinked into thinking you have a championship caliber team. You don't. Cause yall shole aint good. At all.
Sorry.

HAHAHA!! Hey, who let this idiot off the short bus. We beat y'all with the SAME coach that's been whoopin' Ala State's for years....a D-2 coach at that....THEN, you can't beat the SAME coach with a group of new players that haven't gelled but we are the sorry team. HAHAHAHAAHAAAAAA!!!

This boy needs an enema. :lmao:
