Doctors Say ‘Hood Disease’ Threatens Inner-City Youth

The CDC says about 30 percent of inner-city children are affected by post-traumatic stress disorder, which has also become known as “hood disease.â€

Large numbers of inner-city youths suffer from a condition known as “hood disease,†a form of post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from persistent exposure to trauma, according to research cited by KPIX 5.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 30 percent of U.S. inner-city youths are affected by the disorder, which makes it difficult for them to learn, the news site says. Those who exhibit the disorder often live in virtual war zones, the CDC report says.

Doctors at Harvard recently coined the name “hood disease,†a term for a more complex form of PTSD, the news site reports. And since the youths rarely escape their communities—unlike soldiers who eventually leave a war zone—they are repeatedly exposed to trauma.

I was listening to this on the radio. This issue is nothing new. One doesn't even need to be a Doctor to know the cause of this so called condition. If they are going to give this condition a name, I think it deserves something better than "hood disease." I would call it simply, "Life." It is what it is. How do you overcome it, you use whatever faith you have, think positive, and be determined to rise no matter what the odds are against you. That's why when I see someone who has become successful, I don't hate, I celebrate. I have no idea what they have gone through to get to the level that they are at. SMH about how this is coming about as being news in this present day and age.

It sounds plausible, except that “Hood Disease†doesn’t exist. No researcher or trauma specialist has ever uttered the phrase. Neither Harvard doctors, nor CDC researchers were interviewed for the piece, which was reported by KPIX’s Wendy Tokuda.

“I so regret using the term 'Hood Disease' which is not a term either the CDC uses or HARVARD,†Tokuda explained in an email to EBONY. “That came from a resident in Oakland, and we seized on it. It is my fault.†The piece, she wrote, was about children suffering from Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Most of the report focused on inner-city youth and violence. It shows teachers from an East Oakland, Calif., high school discussing the challenge of teaching students preoccupied with violence and poverty. B-roll depicts students walking the halls with laminated pictures of befallen friends dangling from their necks like morbid jewelry. It’s a story that could have aired in any major city on any night of the year. That is, except for the “Hood Disease†phrase, which was uttered about 45 seconds into the piece.

I don't like the name of it....but yes people who live in an area that does not have a lot of resources will have some type of issue later. It has to be something about taking baths in cold water, eating cereal and water for breakfast, Vienna sausages for lunch, lighting the house via candles, and sleeping in a room with no air that seems war-like. Except 1. You didn't volunteer for this life-style like someone in the military, 2. Everything you know is struggle so no it will not get better 3. This isn't a temporary situation. Which often makes this cycle repeat over and over plus the poor decisions that will be made because this is the path your parents took so you don't know anything different.

the poor decisions of your parents either through ignorance or laziness or plain evilness, can be escaped, but you have to have the
drive to get up and get out and away, but often times the crabs in the barrel mentality exists in the immediate environment adding to the
difficulty.
