Help sought for stranded storm evacuees
About 100 hurricane Gustav evacuees remain at the State Fairgrounds in a Red Cross shelter because they cannot afford to get home.
The Hinds County Sheriff?s Department is appealing to any person or organization that can donate gas money or transportation for these people to come forward.
These evacuees cannot afford the gas to get home or do not have rides, Chief Deputy Steve Pickett said. They were not bused home because they did not arrive in Jackson on buses.
?We are appealing to the public,? he said.
The Red Cross has said it will keep a shelter open at the Trade Mart at the fairgrounds as long as people need it.
The agency cannot provide financial assistance to the evacuees.
Anyone wishing to help should call Pickett at (601) 260-9876.
