HBCUs need to come together

....and decide to separate. The concept of the SWAC on the D1 level is outdated. We can't compete with other FCS level schools because there are too many FCS HBCUs. There should only about 6 FCS HBCUs. I know black folks working together for the greater good is a foreign unreasonable concept but we can't keep doing the same thing expecting a different result .

Schools like TennSt FAMU JSU Hampton and about 2 others could compete better if other HBCUs weren't diluting the talent. Not only are we competing with each other for talent but we are now competing with PWCs on the FCS level plus mid major schools. BCF would do itself a big favor if some schools would admit they don't have a chance a really ain't trying. In addition to competing with other schools our own alums don't send our most talented players to HBCUs

The best example is AlabamaA&M. How much better would TennSt or bamastate be if the few D1 level players were on their roster? Sooner or later we are going to figure out that this PopWarner level athletics ain't cutting it. If we could just get the rest of y'all to move to D2 it would be better for all collectively.

Lets march

1. We can't compete with other FCS level schools
2. we can't keep doing the same thing expecting a different result .
3. our own alums don't send our most talented players to HBCUs

+1 in agreeance to those previous 3 statements you gave Great One. I agree 101% and I too stand accused of guilt for committing an offense to #3. I succumbed to allowing the young ones make their own decisions vs enforcing my ideologies.

I agree. Imagine if JSU, Southern, and Grambling had moved in to the Sunbelt years ago. I hate the SWAC because the league of presidents have attempted to maintain a tradition that worked 40 years ago. Now that the segregation barrier is closed there is progression for HBCU athletic programs to grow.

Re: HBCUs need to come together to separate

I agree that certain schools stymied SWAC progression. Namelyour own PV & what we offered from the 70s-late 90s. PV was d-1 cloaked but sub d-ii offering athletically. Even now I think the 9-game mandate was created for the PV type SWAC schools w/ zero drawing power outside the SWAC.

I agree. This has created a stagnant group of colleges still clinging to "classics."

Re: HBCUs need to come together to separate

i agree with all this nine game mandate is killing the swac. if they change the rules back to seven games they should fine any school that schedules a swac opponate as an "out of conference" game. it will force the school do what other schools do by scheduling 5 years in advance instead of year by year.

When we had the 7 game mandate... yall were STILL playing SWAC schools... others couldnt find a team to schedule. Dont blame the SWAC... blame your own schools. Personally for AAMU we had a perfect schedule... We had Hampton, Tn State, Jacksonville State and D2 for a home classic... SOME other schools struggled.

If the Presidents agree to raise the conference fee to 300,000 DOLLARS, some schools you mentioned in the past will have to go back to D2. I am in favor of raising the conference fee to $250,000 in 2013, $300,000 in 2014. However, I know that AAMU would have no problem with the $300,000 STARTING IN 2013.

Right now there are too many D1 HBCUs.
You dont have 25 D1 Catholic Universitys. You only have 1 big one (Notre Dame) and a few stragglers ...Boston College and a few others. But the main school is Notre Dame.
We cant do that. We are always separated and poor/weak instead of together and rich/strong. We do the same thing in the black church and black society that we do BCF.

For definite sure JSU TennSt SC State FAMU and Hampton should be the group that remains at the D1 level. Most of the rest of you need to go D2. Schools like SU Grambling Valley and Alcorn would thrive on the D2 level. A&M definitely should go back to D2. This is definitely not the place for them.

Just look at the Texas schools. PV has always been a loser and Texas Southern is falling apart day by day. Why wont they end the nightmare of trying to compete at a level thats just not made for them. The state of Texas hates them and their few graduates dont care much for them either.

Imagine how much better we could compete if the talent coaching and money was concentrated to a few schools. We have to do better than just going to these games to see these unconventional bands hump the ground at halftime. Its time we graduated from this foolishness.

Why did I even bother coming in this thread.lol Should have known what to expect after seeing who started the topic.

Exactly. You knew he would use this thread to down all the other SWAC schools. Basically saying JSU is the only SWAC school worthy to play at the D1 level.

Next thread.

The Texas schools not caring at one time allowed other schools to inflate expectations and think more of themselves than they really were....now look at the rest of them now and how they're struggling once state aid they relied on began to dwindle...

PV is going in the opposite direction as evident by their performance across the board this year

Have you seen a J-State halftime show? Fat dudes stripping and kicking grills... the boom has it's moments too. By your logic, JSU should look at D2 as well

Get Ready,

Jackson State and the other HBCU institutions you mention could solve this problem by moving to the FBS level in football (i.e. join the SunBelt). In fact, Jackson State could move its football program to the FBS level as an independent, similar to Notre Dame, while the rest of your athletic programs could remain in the SWAC or the OVC.

You can say that again.....

No they can't....If they leave for football, they need to take all the rest of their sports with them....

Ready Ready,

What is stopping you all? Could it be your president? Go handle that Great One!!! :emlaugh: BTW, while you're handling the move to the FBS let him know that Jsu is no longer going to the SCG starting in 2012. :emlaugh:

I certainly don't expect any of you to agree with the premise if this topic. Resistance to change is inevitable even when the facts are right in your face. JSU is not the only school that should be D1 from the SWAC. I left room for a few more with potential. Bamastate could remain but they are in for a huge failure if this stadium situation doesn't work out. SU has all the potential in the world but their administration is so discombobulated that it would profit SU to go d2 or suspend their athletic program until they get themselves in order. That new inexperienced AD is certainly not going to pull them out if the mess they are in.

The basic question is :
Do we want 20 Prairie Views or do we want 4 or 5 competitive FCS schools.

If hbcus want to continue to be the Prairie View of FCS we can continue to do what we are doing. If we want to grow and be competitive and put a champion on the field we have to do something different.

While you are in the President's office let him know that Jsu is in 6th place with their budget in the SWAC. Then point your finger at him and let him know that is going to change. :emlaugh:
