Southern rebounded from each of its first two losses of the season with an impressive road victory.

After losing at Arkansas 86-68 in the season opener Nov. 13, the Jaguars came back three days later and won at Mississippi State 76-72.

After losing at Grand Canyon University 70-56 on Dec. 8, Southern came back two days later and won at Wyoming 68-58.

The Jaguars (7-3) will try and rebound in similar fashion when they play at Louisiana Tech at 6:30 p.m. Friday, just three days after a 72-67 loss at Memphis.

“I wasn’t happy with the outcome, but I was happy with the intensity we showed,” Southern coach Roman Banks said. “It shows us we’ve got to be more consistent. We’ve got to find a way to win.”

Southern comes up short at Louisiana Tech 83-76
RUSTON — For the second consecutive game, Southern went on the road and came up short at the free-throw line.

The Jaguars lost to Louisiana Tech 83-76 on Friday night in the Thomas Assembly Center as the Bulldogs outscored them by 14 points at the foul line.

On Tuesday night, Southern lost 72-67 at Memphis as the Tigers had a 16-point edge at the foul line.

“When we play these high-major programs, we’ve got to learn to adjust to the physicality of the game without fouling,” Jaguars coach Roman Banks said. “We’re not happy to just play these teams close. I like that we’re giving ourselves a chance to win, but we’ve got to find a way to get the win.”

Southern fell to 7-4 after losing consecutive games for the first time this season. It will play North Carolina Central on Monday on the first day of the two-day Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas.

Tech is 9-2 after winning for the 56th time in 57 home games.

It was the second-most points allowed by the Jaguars this season. They lost at Arkansas 86-68 in the season opener Nov. 13.

Southern made 13-of-24 free throws, and Tech made 27-of-38.

Worst game SU played all season, but the refs weren't going to let us win. Wasn't as bad as the Memphis game but it was ridiculous smh.
 
Southern seeks strong finish to nonconference schedule

Southern concludes its nonconference schedule with two games in the Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.


Southern vs. North Carolina Central

What: Global Sports Classic

When: 3:30 p.m. Monday

Where: Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada

The Jaguars (7-4) play North Carolina Central at 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon and will face either Eastern Illinois or Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday. After that, they break for Christmas and don’t play again until visiting Texas Southern for the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener Jan. 2.

Southern has been on the road for a week, having lost at Memphis (72-67) on Tuesday and at Louisiana Tech (83-76) on Friday. In both games, the Jaguars had a lead in the second half but got outscored down the stretch.

“We’ve got to zero in on North Carolina Central,” Southern coach Roman Banks said. “We’ve got to put together a good game and try to get back in the win column.”

The Jaguars have lost consecutive games for the first time this season. In both games, Southern was beaten badly at the foul line. The Jaguars shot half as many free throws (40) as their opponents (80) and got outscored by 30 points at the line. They committed 57 fouls and their opponents committed 38.
