Guess the Southern v. Tulane Score

In the spirit of the USM/JSU thread already present on this board, I'm offering you SU fans a chance to guess the score of our impending matchup. Before I get attacked for posting what I feel will be the accurate score, let me remind y'all that for the balance of the season, I'm a Jag fan (gotta live with 1/2 of my family).

That said:

Baton Rouge native Mewelde Moore is too much for the Jags defense, and when they try to stop him, J.P. Losman (next in what is become a line of quality TU QBs) throws to Roydell Williams, Nick Narcisse, or even runs it himself. By the fourth quarter, Derrick Joseph shows why Syracuse was among the schools who recruited him four years ago, and notches another TD, swinging one out to freshman Javon Jackson, a product of Shaun King's high school.

Meanwhile, the Wave defense will be much improved, as SU has trouble running on a more fundamentally sound defense than last year. TU's speed at LB makes a serious impact in this department. Michael Hayes will make some big catches, as he is wont to do, but he will only find the endzone once. Victor Ike learns that the O-line at UT was much better than he gave credit, and will have to make up most of his yardage on kick returns, of which he will see several. While his total yardage numbers may be high, his point total will be nil.

The Jag punter's average will suffer from having several opportunities and having to do more directional kicking, in order to avoid another Elpheage TD return. If he makes any mistakes, however, it's another six for the Wave.

My prediction:

TU 48
SU 13

The Wave really calls off the dogs in the end of this one.

This should be on the sports board.

Tulane has no defense and inexperience at Q.B. Your Q.B. will be hit hard and often. Southern defense is much improved along with special teams. Southern will not be in a good mood entering into the SUperdome.

Before I start, check our http://sportsonly.com/boards/tulane

It may get fun over there. :)

TU fired its DC last season, and brought in the guy who had SMU ranked in the top 25 in overall defense. SMU has similar talent to TU, so we expect improvement over there.

J.P. Losman was ranked behind only Chris Simms coming out of HS. He's a talent--in two starts, he averaged over 300 yards per game passing. He also possesses similar mobility to Shaun King.

SU may hold TU to 17 points in the first quarter, but the Jags will only be able to muster up 42 points in the Dome when JSU comes to town.

Cool, but come on over to Ye Olde Green Wave Forum. Should be fun times. Better than the other Big Cats in Baton Rouge posting there. ;)

I say, I say....

the special man says...

SU 28
TU 24

I call it a close one because the "thirst" is there for SU. Mewelde Moore didn't really run wild on SU last year. If it weren't for a fake punt, he would have been sub-100 yards. As for Losman, let's just say that he'll be running all nite with that knick knack o-line that Tulane patched together.

I see a lot of first game jitters, but unlike last year, our defense will be the receivers of turnovers aplenty!!!

Actually, Losman is a more all around threat than Ramsey. Plus, I don't think SU can stop Mewelde Moore and the passing game. SU's secondary is very SUspect!

I actually would like to see Southern win this game. It will be closer than last year's game, but Tulane is still gonna get the win.
Better overall talent than at SU, especially at qb and the running game. Yes Mewelde is waaaaay better than Victor Ike!

I have to disagree with you there MB, Toolame is going to kill them fools...but I do wish them (SUcks) well.

Mewelde ran for over 200 yards. The fake punt was for 50 yards.

200-50=150. Thus, Mewelde would have had well over 100 yards without the fake.

If Losman runs all night, he'll have at least 70 yards on the ground.

Southern had a winning season last year, Tulane had a horrible season last year. The defense is out to prove that they aren't a bunch of chumps, so they will step it up.

As for those who say that SU's QB woes happened only in a scrimmage (two weeks before the season opener), you should note that other schools' QBs did not struggle. Hell, OU's QBs didn't struggle, and their defense is pretty good.

oddly enough...

you are correct in the Mewelde Moore assessment...blame it on old age, but one thing we know that you don't....

ToLAME SUCKS!!!

They will bite the big one because we come with a more experienced defense, not the sophomores you met last year.

Our "O" moved the ball at will last year with scrubs. A healthy unit will move the ball into the endzone undaunted.

AND....

We now know what to expect from those playground Conference USA ref's who refuse to call interference, holding, etc.

We learned a pretty good lesson last year and this year....?

Expect to be handled!!!

Well i'm not gonna wish you guys well because I already know that McNeese is gonna put their foot so deep in yalls azz that it will take all season long just to pull out the heel.

You guys kill me with that "i'm pulling for you because of the conference" crap. You won't here me saying that about any of your schools. I pull for SU and SU ONLY!

At least try to create an original insult with the school name.

And how does someone suck when they whipped you 41-7?

Tulane's defense is more experienced, as are the skill players on offense.

Anyone who's ever stepped on a field of competition knows not to blame the officiating for a win or a loss. The first sign of a LOSER is one who blames those other than himself for his loss.

I still want to know how SU will handle a top I-A offense with a middle of the pack I-AA defense.

Let me answer your question

I don't think we would handle a top 1-AA offense at all. But since we are not playing one this year that is not a concern of ours. Your offense is highly rated only because you play in one of the weakest conferences in 1-A football and the rest of your schedule consists of a 1-AA school (Southern) and teams that should be 1-AA (ULL, ULM, and probably La. Tech). Your stats are inflated.

Our defense played well last year against your "top rated offense". But too many turnovers by the offense and too much dept just wore away at us. Good for you bad for us.

But that was last year. This is a new year.

Tulane's offensive ranking in I-A is legitimate.

Conference USA boasted four of the top 10 defenses in I-A last season:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/college/stats/2001/NCAAFteamtotaldefense.html

Tulane played all four of these, scoring well against three of them.

The balance of Tulane's OOC last season included LSU, Navy, and Central Florida, and BYU. Two of those teams were top twenty (one of them won the Sugar Bowl) and the other was a top 2 defense in the country (behind UAB, a CUSA foe). If you try to argue that THEIR competition was weak, then I challenge you to link to each of their pages on CNN/SI.com and examine their schedules.

While TU didn't play Tech, Tech availed itself fairly well in a snowy bowl game last season against Satan-err-Tommy Bowden's Clemson team.

Scelfo may call off the dogs and stop before he hangs sixty on y'all only because his boy is now your OC.

Oh, by the way, CUSA is the same as the Big Least minus Miami.
