GRAMBLING - The Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year is still making news even though Grambling State's season is over.

GSU sophomore forward Paul Haynes (6-8, 215) has been named an honorable mention selection on the 2001-02 Associated Press All-America basketball team.

Haynes led the SWAC and ranks No. 34 nationally in scoring with 20.3 points per game and ended up tied for No. 2 in SWAC rebounds with 8.6 per contest.

The native of Auburn Hills, Mich., poured in a career-high 40 points in a home game against Jackson State and 29 points at Villanova and at home against Arkansas-Little Rock. He also tied a career-high of 16 rebounds on the road at Prairie View A&M.

Haynes led GSU in double-doubles with 10, scored at least 20 points 15 times and scored in double figures in all of Grambling's 28 games.

"You can't say enough about what Paul Haynes means to our team," GSU coach Larry Wright said. "He's a big block to build around, now we just have to add to the mix. But for Paul to do these kinds of things can really help us in recruiting, It's a great honor for him and for our program and I'm very thankful to be able to coach a player with his kind of talent and work ethic."

Haynes was one of two players from an Historically Black College or University to earn All-America honors along with Hampton's Tommy Davis, who also received honorable mention.
