Oh, how mighty have fallen

GRAMBLING - It's been a long time since a game between Grambling State and Jackson State meant so little.

It was 1969, to be exact. A year removed from a SWAC co-championship, GSU would slump to 6-4 while JSU endured the second of two straight losing seasons. Grambling won 62-12 that day.

Jackson State hasn't had two non-winning campaigns in a row since. Saturday's surprising win over GSU ensured that ignominious end will have to wait for the visiting Tigers.

These two teams entered Robinson Stadium hoping not for a title, but for a winning record. A rainshower during the 1 o'clock hour in Lincoln Parish gave way to shards of sunlight, so the crowd was late coming.

So was GSU's offense. After giving up 19 first-quarter points, the home team didn't answer with a touchdown until the third quarter.

GSU knocked off at home by JSU

GRAMBLING - Jackson State didn't begin Saturday's game against Grambling State like a team that's won just three games in two seasons.

In fact, with three first-quarter scores, Jackson State had already bested its scoring average of 17 points per game on the year.

GSU would mount a furious comeback, scoring all of its 23 points late, but couldn't recover. JSU won 32-23.

GSU's Clyde Edwards attempted to spark the comeback, pulling in two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from fellow freshman Brandon Landers. Terrion Rodgers added a pair of two-point conversions.

The visitors answered, as JSU's Steve Haren hit Cletis Gordon for an 18-yard strike with 13:05 remaining. Then Landers connected on a 60-yard scoring pass to junior Henry Tolbert to cut the JSU lead to two points, 25-23.

It took a final interception on a Landers pass by Gordon, returned 60 yards for a touchdown, to seal the win.

"We've said all along that we were going to live or die with the freshman," interim GSU coach Melvin Spears said of Landers. "We died tonight."

Jackson State is now 2-5 overall and 2-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Grambling State is 3-4, but 1-3 in the SWAC.

This struggling JSU team found a way to overcome slippery conditions, taking advantage of miscues and mishaps.

Senior Chris Jones pulled in an 89-yard score on a tipped pass. Then JSU linebacker Vincent Dansby returned an acrobatic, one-handed interception deep in his own redzone all the way back to the GSU 26. David Kennebrew punched in two plays later and, after a missed kick, the score was JSU 19-0.
