GSU hurt by senior losses

Grambling coach Doug Williams knows that his offense will have to learn quickly after the return of only 10 starters.

GRAMBLING - The offensive skilled positions have been plundered by graduation and academic problems, yet the Grambling State football team is unswayed.

As the Tigers prepare to defend back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, consider this: Gone from last season's team are starting quarterback Randy Hymes, starting receivers Levi Washington and Ellis Spears and the starting backfield tandem of running back Brad Hill and fullback Jadaw Lawrence.

Those players accounted for 4,379 of Grambling's 4,621 yards of total offense last year and scored all but 12 of the Tigers' 48 touchdowns.

"We're definitely looking for some identity," head coach Doug Williams said. "We've got a lot of potential, but no experience whatsoever."

Hymes, Washington and Spears ran out of eligibility, but Hill and Lawrence were academic casualties.

"We have got to replace a bunch of fellas," offensive coordinator Melvin Spears said. "We have to be patient, but we have some guys who have shown some promise."

Of all the losses, none has stung as much as Hill. Grambling was counting on the big, bruising tailback to take the pressure off the offense until it could come together.

Last season the 5-10, 230-pounder became Grambling's first 1,000-yard rusher in eight years with 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Tigers' plan was to give opponents a heavy dose of Hill early.

"Brad Hill hurt us big time," Williams said. "We had a plan. We wanted to take the pressure off the quarterback, but you can't cry over spilled milk."

Instead the Tigers are hoping to create a productive offense around a new cast of characters.

The leading role falls to sophomore quarterback Bruce Eugene. Eugene saw limited playing time last year, playing in seven games. Eugene completed 51-of-101 passes for 693 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

Eugene, who is listed at 6-1, 230, is a totally different quarterback than Hymes. Hymes was a superb athlete who made plays with his legs and strong arm on sheer ability.

Eugene is not blessed with Hymes' athletic ability. In fact, few are, but Eugene brings a more cerebral approach to the position and a quiet leadership.

"He has had a great camp and worked well with the guys here," Spears said. "Eugene's strength is his ability to know any position. He's a smart guy and he understands the game. He has a real feel."

The coaches were concerned about Eugene in the spring because he had gained so much weight in the off-season. However, Eugene reported to camp a little slimmer and is established as the No. 1 quarterback.

"Bruce brings a lot of knowhow of the game," senior center Terry Riley said. "He's a good reader of defenses and knows all the audibles. He's a real inspiration to the team. He knows what's at stake and I think he will uphold it."

The new receiving corps features junior Tramon Douglas, who is expected to step into the go-to role, along with sophomore Moses Harris and senior Thyron Anderson.

Douglas finished fourth on the team last year with 19 receptions for 231 yards and one score.

"Watching Ellis and Levi and Scotty (Anderson two years ago) as the go-to guys, I saw how to handle it," Douglas said. "When it's your turn, you've got to make big plays and everytime I get the ball I'm going to try to make something happen with it."

One of the hits of camp has been Harris, a 6-0, 180-pounder. Harris has shown the ability to give the Tigers a deep threat, which is so vital to their vertical passing attack.

"Moses has been a surprise," Spears said. "We knew he had skill, but he's caught the ball much better than we thought. We were going to move him to defensive back, but he's been the surprise of camp."

The senior Anderson has been tagged with the "potential" label for years, but has never put it together. But Williams and Spears see signs the 6-4, 180-pounder is ready to put together a good season.

The big question, however, revolves around the backfield. With the loss of Hill, the running duties fall to junior Karrell Charles and freshman Lindsey Sanders.

"Lindsey Sanders has got ability and Karrell Charles has shown the ability to make people miss and gain yards," Williams said. "People would have played us more honest with Brad Hill, but somebody's got to step up now."

The security blanket Williams can wrap around all this inexperience is an offensive line anchored by two seasoned veterans in Riley and left tackle Brandon James. Also, left guard Alan Brice and right tackle Kenneth Ogletree have game experience.

"We can help lead the younger guys and coach them along the way," Riley said. "We've got talent, it's just a matter of guys getting the feel for the game. The biggest thing is we all believe in each other."

Bean,

Since these are AP stories (carried by multiple papers), I'm wondering why you didn't post the two that discussed Chris Brown/Denmark Reed of the one about Doug Williams Successful following of A Legend?

If you're not careful, I would swear you were the reincarnation of Rona Barrett.

Reasoning is that there where too many articles to post. So, I grabbed the first two and left the other three. If I was to post all of them, then you all would be complaining about that.

No, the stories are not AP stories. They are from the Monroe News Star. This is why I have repeatedly asked that all of you please post the source of these stories if you are going to post them on this forum.

There are copyright issues involved here. I may even have to start deleting post if this information is not provided.

Well, not from every school. I mean, whenever there is not 600 students and faculty members coming out to support a team, there is usually no news to report on some teams.

You are too slow to realize just how dumb your post was.
:(

btw, please don't start crying cause Kenn gon delete all your pasting.
:bawling:

Bean

Stop posting sports articles on the sports board. Gathering info and being informative about SWAC schools is not what this forum is about. Other than Kenns point, I dont understand why people dont like these articles posted.

I dont go to the Montgomery times, so this is a real treat for me. If you guys dont want these articles on the net, shouldnt you be complaining to the Newspaper? Are you ashamed of what they are writing? Werent you Grambling folks jumping up and down last year when an article quoted one of your coaches...."I cant see us losing"....?

So whats the problem now?

Look at big brotha coming to lil' brothas rescue. That's so nice...

I was just messing with him, bruh. See my high school used to kick his bigger high schools azz in football. Plus, he's on my list for "pulling a Trey White" and leaving GSU. maybe his roommate took his bed!:D

GR,
Get real. You talk about what the Grambling folks were saying last year, but you and TP were saying how dumb it is to post articles from newspapers. But now, all of a sudden, you don't see a problem with it, huh?

Sure, some of the articles may be "informative", but this dude post every article he can find about every SWAC school (and some meac schools). And he does it every day. :( :( (except of course, when an article is negative about JSU, you won't find it copied and pasted here)

The vast majority of these pastings don't even get a single response from anybody. It's bothersome to log on the board every day and see more of them. It's old and it ought to be stopped. I'm glad you finally stood up and told bean to stop doing it. Kudos to you for that.

I said that using articlels from newspaper as smack was smalltime. In this instance, all he is doing is posting the articles on the sports board. He is not smacking with them, just posting.

There is no need to comment on the articles, but its obvious that people view them.

Heres the thing, he posts good and bad articles about AAALLL schools, even JSU. But you guys are so myopic you cant see that. You guys need to quit your *****ing and moaning cause your own local paper cant find anything good to say about you.

LOL@ this whole issue. Besides what Kenn said. I have no issue with Bean. I read The Advocate and the Clarion-Ledger anyway. So what Bean is posting is not bothering me. Now I do appreciate seeing other info on the rest of the SWAC, because I don't go the those papers to read them. But if people are tired of seeing it. Then if I was him, I would not waste my time posting it. I don't think any Jag Nation members have a problem with Bean on this. I could be wrong. But hey good articles or bad articles are bound to be written about all the teams. Oh well. My 2 cents. Carry on.

GR,
Seems like we agree then. Some of this stuff shouldn't be posted. Not all the time. Not 10 new topics every day. Not just because its in the newspaper. A lot of these articles are about absolutely nothing. Just think, when the season really starts, there will be even more articles. Scary to think what the board would have looked like with all those damn articles every day.

but otherwise, nice spin, GR!!!

I knew you would!

:p

Again, thank you for standing up.
:D

How about this MH

Heres a brand new concept, dont open the posts you dont like. Nobody is in control of you mouse but you.

I guess you got your excuses ready for this year huh?

"If bean just hadnt posted those articles, we woulda won"

Stop the spin man!!!!

School pride is something else.
:p

Oh well....

Here is my take. I might go to another teams paper about once a month so I miss a lot of things. During the season, I might check out some stories on that Sunday to see how some things went down but in the pre-season, it is good to be able to keep up. I think most of you are upset that the newspapers are not saying anything good about your teams. That's not BlacknBengal's fault.

However Black, I do have a suggestion. You do a good job finding the artlicles and it might be too late this year but if you do this next year, it might be best to name treads things like "Recent Grambling News" or "Preseason Southern Footbal" and just put all of the articles under one thread. That way people who may not read the boards all of the time can catch up and see the depletion in all of these teams from day one.

Now, we can get a woman's point of view

I can understand what you're saying Kenn, in regards to the copyright issues; but on the other hand, I see Black posting articles on SU on a daily basis and I've never once seen you say anything about it. Now, since he's posted a gSU story that's not to most of your liking, it's an issue.

Personally, I like the articles being posted just for the simple fact that most of us don't read other schools papers and this is the sports board, so what better place to have the sports information posted. I like to be on the up and up ya know. Y'all need to back up off the boy....I don't think he meant any harm in it.

DAYUM!!!!!!!!

Precisely TP

But the problem here is not the article, its the content.

If these articles were about how great Brashears is looking, no one would say a thing.

Dtown,

Slow your role and take my school affiliation out of this. Good grief!!!

My statement was not directed at any one particular person and I didn't say not to post anymore stories. All I said was to make sure the souce of the story was included...That is all that I said.

This is not the first time that I have made mention of this either.

Your school affiliation was brought into the picture when this article was posted, I had nothing to do with that.

Dayum MH! Now look what you've done?! Went off and started a war!!!

As GR would say,
"DAMN YOU!" :redhot:

It's all your fault!!!!!! :redhot: :redhot: :redhot:
