Grandfather recounts life of crime

FORT WORTH - Jerry Dean Brierton is a career criminal, and not a very good one at that.
A grandfather who will turn 70 in December, Brierton has been behind bars for 40 of the past 42 years, mostly for bank robbery convictions in 1973 and 1988. Federal and state court records outline an extraordinarily lengthy criminal history that spans more than half a century, dating to 1952 and his arrest for writing hot checks.
Now Brierton, a short, wiry man who resembles Woody Allen when he dons a Panama hat, appears resigned to the prospect of living out his life behind bars.
"Prison is a scary place," he said. "A lot of paranoid people. You don't dare look around mess hall and lock eyes with somebody."
