Quarterback Bruce Eugene wins second straight Division I-AA Total Offense Title


GRAMBLING, La. ? The Grambling State Tiger football team has won a couple of NCAA Division I-AA statistical titles which was announced by the NCAA office earlier this week. The G-Men as a team won the Division I-AA passing title while quarterback Bruce Eugene won the total offense title. This marked the second straight year that these two feats have been accomplished by the Grambling State football program.

The Tigers finished the 2003 season averaging 321.8 yards per game en route to a 9-3 season. This marked the second straight year that the team has won the national passing title. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Melvin Spears felt that this was a major league accomplishment. "I think it is a major league feat based on where we are in the development of our program. I think it is a tribute to our head coach (Doug Williams) who is a tremendous leader and our consistency as a offensive coaching staff with outstanding players."

Eugene is a 6-foot-1 inch, 245-pound junior led the nation in total offense for the second straight year by averaging 351.7 yards per game. He completed 285 of 528 passes for 3,805 yards including 34 touchdowns while rushing 94 times for 412 yards including six scores. This marked the fifth post-season award that the New Orleans, Louisiana native has won this season. His other awards include as follows: Runner-up for the 2003 Walter Payton Award (which is sponsored by The Sports Network); first and second team selections to The Sports Network and the Associated Press? 2003 Division I-AA All-America football teams respectively. He was also a second team All-Louisiana Football Team selection.

Eugene was rather pleased with his accomplishments, but gave most of the praise to his teammates. "It is a good award to have, but I have to give it up to my teammates who blocked and caught the ball for me throughout the season."

Before this quote is taken out of context, I just want to clear it up. This is not smack towards GSU. It's just that last fall, all I heard and read from JSU detractors and other folks was JSU had the top ranked offense and passing game and how Bell killed that, drove it into the ground etc. I steadily maintained that we didn't and this article proves it if Gram won it for the second year straight.
